I used to definitely shut off all external signs that anything is happening to me when under real stress to avoid showing weakness or giving away my emotions. If its bad enough it straight up looks like autism. It was a terrible coping mechanism that allowed me to function at the cost of my emotional depth. To everyone else i was just a really calm dude gliding through life. Very agreeable and patient as a stone. But in reality it was just a constant stream of embarresment and fear that i couldnt turn off. And the less i emote the more extraordinary my actual normal reactions were to others, which made me feel self conscious and suppress them twice as hard.
