And it has probably made him one of the most approachable and well liked Firelords in history because like. The others in recent history often had problems with g3nocide, stoicism, nationalism, heirarchy, and royal family dramas, and this one's just a highly competent but painfully awkward and well meaning icon who just wants to clean up his Dad's mess.

The way combustion bending came about is actually insane. They tortured fire benders and forced them to try and bend in the ocean while being sealed off with ice. And since they couldn't make hot fires while being submerged for so long they had to make a force strong enough to break the ice while being chained. A brutal training no doubt but the results speak for themselves.
