Daniel Dae Kim's performance as Ozai has been extraordinary. Some people will be upset that they didn't follow the animated series attempts to keep him obscured until season 3, but this is *working.* One of the few criticisms I'll give the animated series was that Ozai always felt like an almost abstract threat. We knew of him, we knew he was in power, we knew what he did to Zuko. But when he actually saw him and met him, he felt so....small? Almost? Like, everything he had was just given to him. He was born into a nation leading a war that was already 3/4 won and being the leader of that nation gave him this sense of accomplishment. He even gives himself a new moniker, "The Phoenix King" to draw attention to the fact that he was the one who finally won the war, when he was just fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. Even his "epic masterstroke" to "use the comet's power to set everything on fire" wasn't his own idea, it was Azula's. He was born on the 59th floor of a 60-story building, and truly believed he'd earned his way to the top. Guy was nothing more than a smug nepo-baby with no moral inhibitions. This Ozai is different. This Ozai is actively making the world more on fire than it already is. Things are getting worse and he is the one to blame. He is ruthless, intolerant, and cruel. Seeing this fight really makes Zuko's words ring out in my ears. "You. My father. Who challenged me, a 13-year-old boy, to an Agni Kai. How can you possibly justify a duel against a child?" Then there's Azula. She may have been "born a monster," but being at Ozai's side during all this has without doubt scarred her and made the damage so much worse. She has watched her father immolate people for disloyalty, for failure, for daring to stand against him. She has been on the receiving end of just as much emotional manipulation & abuse as Zuko. And with Zuko gone, now there's no one else for Ozai to heap it on. Already, I sympathize with this poor girl who I know is a vicious killer. Because she is getting worse with every day she's around Ozai.

The casting was truly perfect. But I have no idea why they had to show Ozai being caught off-guard in an AGNI KAI and Zuko showing that he was holding back. In fact Zuko even successfully defended against several of his father's attacks, which makes no sense. It massively reduced the threat Ozai poses and made him look pathetic. In the original the whole point of this part was to show that Zuko was too terrified to fight his own father. Ozai didn't have to do any flashy moves or expend any effort because the point was to show his blunt cruelty on his son, not his firebending moves. That's why in book 3 it's so awesome when Zuko finally DOES fight back for the first time, showing his psychological growth.

@@jonathankenton2502 As messed up as this sounds, Omni-Man had a better reason for harming Mark. He beat him because Mark's resistance to Viltrumite rule meant that in the extreme likelihood the Viltrumites pull up to Earth; they'd kill Mark, they'd kill Omni-Man for failing to raise Mark as a Viltrumite and conquer the planet, and Debbie and the rest of humanity would be enslaved. In Nolan's mind, Mark's understandable mutiny was futile because if the planet wasn't conquered Nolan would lose everything he loves, which includes Mark. In a way, Nolan was actually trying his damnedest to save both Mark and Debbie. Yes, had Nolan successfully forced Mark to follow him Earth would be conquered, but the empire would at least spare his family, which is better than death. Ozai's logic for harming his son is less acceptable. He literally beat and burned his son just for disagreeing with his war plans. Unlike Mark's rebellion, Zuko disagreeing with Ozai wouldn't jeopardize the safety of the Fire Nation. Ozai is of a higher rank, so he could've easily dismissed his son's words, but his ego was bruised and that's why he felt the need to discipline him. Omni-Man beat Mark more harshly, but the reasoning for doing so was A LOT more sensible than Ozai's.

I really like the moment he deflects Zukos last (and pathetic) attempt to strike back defiantly and guides his hand to his heart. It's a motion that could say just as much "This is where you aim. You aim to kill. No matter stands in your way." as well as "You are my son. You are my heart. You have failed me. And I want you to feel how much it grieves me to see how I have failed to teach you." You get the sense this is a man who maybe at some point really loved his children. And perhaps he still believes that he does, but that love is the same as building them up to be ruthless killing machines. (No. I don't believe any parent that scars their children actually loves them.) Ozai doesn't love his children. He loves the idea of what they may one day become. He loves the idea of the legacy of the royal line. But at the same time we do get Ozai at a moment where we see a glimpse of the man who once did love them, just for him to permanently scar his heir in order to "impart a lesson".

At 1:56 Ozai can block that but he paused to see what Zuko could do. The entire time it has shown that no move Zuko has, Ozai cannot block or dodge. He let Zuko almost hit him on purpose. Notice how Ozai eyes already locked onto Zuko and his hand and his reaction when Zuko didn’t follow through. That’s how much Ozai is holding back. Until he doesn’t.
@xuvial1391

Ozai was genuinely shocked by Zuko expertly dodging his punch and countering him, and then Zuko showed him mercy. None of it made any sense because in the story Zuko could barely do any firebending at age 13. There is a reason why in the original show they don't show Ozai showing off flashy firebending moves and expending effort, because against a 13-year-old kid he didn't have to do any of that. The point of the "duel" was that there was no duel, there was no fight, it was just blatant cruel humiliation and child abuse. Zuko was so terrified that he just knelt and begged for forgiveness, and then Ozai walked up to him and burned him. That's what made Ozai so terrifying. But in this show Ozai is massively nerfed.

@@xuvial1391 very true. But despite this shock, he is still a combat genius and even when he’s shocked, he still could block Zuko attacks. You can see in this version, Ozai has a certain faith in Zuko and expects more from him as a first born son. The respect Zuko has in holding back, the being reserved like mother is not what Ozai wants. You can even see in his face he didn't want to punish Zuko, but in is mind, he needs to be a stern father to create a strong son. Even talking to him after, sounds like he understands why Zuko held back, but he just didnt like it. Ozai's actions are wrong but justified in his mind as there is only strong and weak. He will not allow his son to be weak. He's wrong but I also understand he wants strength by any means, nothing less

That's not who Ozai is. Ozai despised Zuko all his life for being a failure, and literally tried to cast him out of the palace at birth. The point of banishing him was to get rid of the failure in his family and also as a cruel punishment by having him complete a mission which is nearly impossible.

He even shed tears 😭😭😭 when he burned Zuko's face. Daniel really gives us a new perspective of Ozai and he basically improved the character. Dallas playing Zuko is flawless 🔥🔥🔥 the strong physical resemblance between Zuko and Ozai proves itself to be very intentional that when Daniel's version of Ozai somehow felt like "Oh my gosh, this is exactly how I remembered myself when I was my son's age." I do hope that Dallas will also play a dual role as the younger self of Daniel Dae Kim's Ozai.

I love how they handled Ozai in this series, you can actually see that his actions are justified in his mind, and it’s not like he just hates his own son to hurt his wife like in og show/comics. You also see that he isn’t thinking of Zuko as someone unworthy. In this series, creators actually made Ozai’s intentions and views understandable to audience, though he’s wrong, but he only sees world as there are weak and there are strong, strong survive and prey on weak, and weak subserve to strong or die. I’m actually thinking that in this show if Aang never showed up, this version of Ozai would make Zuko’s life very difficult in banishment to make him stronger. Bring him back home after comet came and Fire nation conquered the rest of the world. Then, he would make him New Fire-Lord, if saw him worthy, just before death. It’s understandable as, son is the heir to the throne and the one continuing generation.

I Like your Point. The showrunners are not Just repeating everyting. They use their own ideas. But imo Ozai is a great Villain because He was a Psychopath. It was incredibly horrorfying when the father attacks and tries to kill His own son (season 3) in a kids Show. Ozai never cared for Zuko. Ozai was a great mysterious Character during the First and Second season. The Live Show and especially the bending Looks awesome, but trying to humanize Ozai? I dont think that works.

@aidarjapykeev4544 2 ай бұрын
@@strokenurse8877 i get your point. But again, you said it yourself, they don’t need to repeat story exactly like it was. In this case it becomes cheap copy of someone else work, even live action. Making series original and authentic is creative and actually makes more sense. For example Aang is really sad that he lost his entire nation. In OG show of course, Aang isn’t much concerned about that other than 2 maximum 3 episodes. It’s realistic. Also Bumi - he saw horrors of war for 100 years, he experienced all that terrifying decisions he had to make as a king of Omashu - like giving food for orphans or soldiers. That’s why he’s serious and angry at Avatar Aang, though Aang disappeared due to not understanding the responsibility and being only child. And Ozai - in comics, it’s revealed that he hated Zuko to hurt his mother, when she said she doesn’t want Zuko to turn out like Ozai, and he said, that from that day on, he’ll treat Zuko as not his own son. And in the show which was before comics, audience can see that Ozai sees his son as weakness and disappointment. And in live action, realistic will be that a father - real Human Father not animated character, cannot be hating his own son that much. After all, he’s his only heir to the throne and in this series, he doesn’t see Azula as worthy. That’s why he wants to make Zuko strong and that’s why he makes his life difficult. Again - it’s realistic. And this is what creators of this show focused on. Real people being realistic not cartoonish.

May I join you? Lt. Jee: Of course, sir. Iroh: Try to understand. My nephew is a complicated young man. He has been through much. (Flashback) Zuko: Let me in! Iroh: Prince Zuko, what's wrong? Zuko: I want to go into the war chamber, but the guard won't let me pass! Iroh: You're not missing anything, trust me. These meetings are dreadfully boring. Zuko: If I'm going to rule this nation one day, don't you think I need to start learning as much as I can? Iroh: Very well. But you must promise not to speak. These old folks are a bit sensitive, you know? Zuko: Thank you, Uncle. (War Room) Gen. Bujing: The Earth Kingdom defenses are concentrated here. A dangerous battalion of their strongest earthbenders and fiercest warriors. So I am recommending the 41st Division. Elder General: But the 41st is entirely new recruits. How do you expect them to defeat a powerful Earth Kingdom battalion? Gen. Bujing: I don't. They'll be used as a distraction while we mount an attack from the rear. What better to use as bait than fresh meat? Zuko: You can't sacrifice an entire division like that! Those soldiers love and defend our nation! How can you betray them? (Present) Iroh: Zuko was right, you see, but it was not his place to speak out. And there were dire consequences. After Zuko's outburst in the meeting, the Fire Lord became very angry with him. He said the challenge against the general was an act of complete disrespect! And there was only one way to resolve this. Lt. Jee: Agni Kai. A fire duel. Iroh: That's right. Zuko looked upon the old general he had insulted and declared that he was not afraid. But Zuko misunderstood. When he turned to face his opponent, he was surprised to see it was not the general. Zuko had spoken out against the general's plan, but by doing so in the Fire Lord's war room, it was the Fire Lord whom he had disrespected. Zuko would have to duel his own father. When Prince Zuko saw that it was his father who had come to duel him, he begged for mercy. (Flashback) Zuko: Please, Father. I only had the Fire Nation's best interest at heart. I'm sorry I spoke out of turn! Ozai: You will fight for your honor. Zuko: (tearfully) I meant you no disrespect. I am your loyal son. Ozai: Rise and fight, Prince Zuko! Zuko: I won't fight you. Ozai: You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher. (Present) Iroh: I looked away. (Flashback) (Ozai burns Zuko on the left side of his face) Zuko: NO!!!!! (Present) Lt. Jee: I always thought that Prince Zuko was in a training accident. Iroh: It was no accident. After the duel, the Fire Lord said that by refusing to fight, Zuko had shown shameful weakness. As punishment, he was banished and sent to capture the Avatar. Only then could he return with his honor. Lt. Jee: So that's why he's so obsessed. Capturing the Avatar is the only chance he has of things returning to normal. Iroh: Things will never return to normal. But the important thing is the Avatar gives Zuko hope.

Idk I don’t dig the fact that it was an actual fight this time around. Zuko was absolutely broken during the Agni Kai in the original and it felt more personally impactful that Ozai could look his cowering 13 year old son in the eyes as he begged for mercy and still give him a burn deep enough to be visible into his 80s. In this version it feels more like a genuine duel, and one where Zuko momentarily had an upper hand at that. It feels less like his world shattered and more like he hesitated. Instead of a blatant act of cruelty it’s something that Ozai could have a very easy time justifying as fair and honorable, seeing as Zuko had ample time to strike him and was defeated when he failed to deal a strong blow. Not to mention everyone’s whole demeanor seems different in this one. Instead of being cold as stone Ozai won’t shut up in this scene. Less of an imposing force and more of a regular abusive dad. Iroh is getting involved but I feel like 6 seconds before the start of the duel is pretty late to voice your concerns when you allegedly know the customs of the court and how these situations play out. Azula not reveling in Zuko’s pain doesn’t bode well with me. I feel like they’re gonna lock in to some dumb “she’s not bad she’s just confused bc her dad made her this way” story that would just about have to gut Zuko and Azula’s Agni Kai.

@@andrewcabral963But the only pay off of that is a merciless zuko and I don't think the series will demand that of him. We know his trajectory and the take you give doesn't align, unless they do different. Also Zuko would think he could surmount to Ozai if he had the upper hand before his departure. While losing pathetically makes his 3 years of growth still leaving looming uncertainty in his mind vs a proven zuko feeling stronger and more deserving. Further exemplified by his use of "Destiny" as though it's a quest, making light of his ordeal juxtaposed to "honor" showing that he's still unproven and finding his worthiness. If the only thing to question is his mercilessness, the bravery he displayed facing ozai during the invasion would be greatly diminished.

Yeah, this may be the case. Ozai in this adaptation really does want to see Zuko at his best, like prove that he is indeed his son, by slowing pushing Zuko into the offensive when the latter made it clear he doesn't want to fight him. Like Zuko nearly succumbed to the pressure and it surprises Ozai for that moment. Hell, it does impressed Ozai but he's disappointed how Zuko didn't go for it. It demonstrates Zuko having major potential despite his age to be a ruthless and dangerous firebender like his father (and Uncle in his military days) and grandfather but he doesn't want to be that kind of person. Ozai wasn't trying, bullied his son to toughen up and prove his worth, and insane enough would've been proud had Zuko followed through and burned him.

I kind of wish Zuko had only evaded and acted mostly defensively towards his father’s moves, before getting an opening and angrily and instinctively pulling back for that strike. Part of the cruelty of this fight is that Zuko REFUSED to fight his father, bc he respected him so much, while his father only saw fear and weakness, even tho it was a 13 year old!!! Refusing to fight his DAD!!! Thematically it would’ve worked well and then you could still have your extended fight. But it was so damn powerful to have Zuko pleading and bowing on the ground at his dad’s feet while the fire lord spoke down at him.

Ozai's expression is like the one of someone who has to do something he really doesn't want to do, and Azula looks confused and shocked by the fact that her dad burned his own son's face. While in the original series they were ruthless and uncompassionate, Netflix adaptation had given both more humanity, which I actually like.

Another path. The Search humanized Ozai by making him more vile but this humanized him by showing that Ozai knew somewhere that this was cruel and wrong but did it anyways. It says how warped his mind is that he did it. The Promise and The Search made it clear that he saw kindness and compassion as weaknesses and it's reflected here. It's also possible that he respected Zuko for fighting back even if it was reluctant.

I love that they didn't make Ozai nearly as moustache-twirling evil in the original series. He sees compassion and mercy as a weakness no doubt drilled into him by his own father. It both makes it very dark and very human that he would face his own son himself. It's clear to see that he wishes to see Zuko drop mercy as a pretense in an actual fight. To be fair in a real fight even if the Fire nation wasn't tyrannical that's how the rules would still go.

Something interesting I noticed. Zuko fights like a halfway point between an earth and air bender. Strong and sturdy then quick and evasive. And both of those give ozai trouble. He can’t catch zuko or break his guard. But zuko doesn’t attack like an earth bender or an air bender. Air benders evade and upset the enemies position. Earth benders block and counter with stance breaking moves. Zuko attacks like a fire bender. Relying on speed and ferocity to over whelm his opponent. Unfortunately ozai is used to fighting fire benders. Ozai however is a fire bender amongst fire benders. Evasive but like a flickering flame. Always out of reach, then he counters every time zuko attacks, like how touching a flame won’t put it out, only burn you. If zuko had truly fought like a combo earth and air bender, the two things that have both blocked, and evaded, ozai, and had no reservations about hitting his father, I honestly think this would be a much closer fight. Zuko isn’t winning, but ozai comes away with a scar of his own.

I don’t care what anyone says besides the dialogue the scenes from the live action were very emotional you can see when ozai is about to and while he is burning Zuko the pain and suffering he has when punishing his son but also the responsibility as the fire lord to keep everyone in their place and if his son is allowed to do so then that means everyone can so zuko isn’t an accept-ion. It shows the tough love our fathers show us thinking that it will make us men when in actuality it only makes us angry, spiteful and hungry for the validation of others such as our parents instead of finding fulfillment in ourselves. This pain wasn’t showed in ozai’s eyes in the animated series. It’s time to stop hating on things just because the media hates on it. Some of the people who hate on the live action haven’t even seen the full thing only people’s reaction to it.
