Dhool is a traditional instrument that is played solo as well as in combination with Shehnai etc. Zulfiqar Ali Malangi Dhooli Jut is a team of seasoned musicians. Some of them play Dhool and some Shehnai. They are regular performers at Punjab Lok Boli Mela.
Punjab Lok Sujag is an organization working for the social uplift of people of Punjab since 1984. The language rights of the people of Punjab are the area of interest and activities for us. To celebrate the richness of our mother tongue and to discuss the varied issues attached with its development, we organized a festival -- Punjab Lok Boli Mela every year since 2004. In 2007 it will be held in "Jaranwala" district Fasialabad from 23rd to 27th November. It is being dedicated to our freedom fighter "Bhagat Sing" and will be staged near his home town.

just sharing my thought and experiences with dhol ... when i was kid, we used to listen to dhol and mostly there were only a few tunes they used to play, two fast ones, and a couple of slow ones. there was ceratin tune for dancing bhangra in fast rhythm. I memorized those tunes as a kid and cannot forget the feeling listening to a dhol being played early morning somewhere far but the tune fills the whole atmosphere.

I agree that this style is comparatively new and especially the organzed playing is new. The one we used to listen to in our childhood was not so organized, that was raw dhol

Hi, nasi As you can see from my comment, I do love this dhol playing. My comment is purely of a historical nature. If you have grown up in Pakistan in the last couple decades, then of course will will have "always" heard this. This is a style that became popular in Pakistani Punjab in the last few decades. I have been doing research with dholis for almost a decade and I have met dholis in every district of Indian Punjab and also in some places of Pak (Lahore, Jhelum, Islamabad)... cont. below>

:) yes, I know, but other people who read sometimes don't read very carefully! it's for them! All I am saying is in recent decades (you can define "traditional" however you want), Pakistani dholis in the cities have shifted to this way of playing. The music is traditional (on tabla), but its application to the dhol is something relatively new. People have begun to regard dhol as something artistic, entertainment, where before it was simple and functional. best, Gibb

whoah, 10-15 years ago? That was a LONG time ago!!! ;) Since the 1980s at least, all Punjabi music has drastically changed. Traditionally, dhol was not an instrument to be played "on stage" for something you'd sit and listen to. It was for functional stuff like dance, at a mazaar, religious processions, wrestling matches, etc. The simple yet function-SPECIFIC rhythms were played, not fancy licks!

This is NOT the style of dhol from pre-Partition. The style of playing is particular to a certain trend in Pak. from more recently. Even the way of holding the dhol, and the sticks have new aspects to them. The effort is to create more of a "classical" performance, which is based on tabla playing. I'm mostly writing this so people who see it understand what they are watching. Traditions change, decade by decade. This is great, but let us not assume (as most people will) that it is very old! :)

Yes, it's a bit technical, and too hard to explain the differences here, point by point. Basically, its different rhythms that are used, and those rhythms match the occasion. The "folk" style is more basic, without ornamentation, since it's important to hear the pattern clearly + no one is listening for "art." The new Pak. dholis use a very stiff, thick stick to get that hard, rapping sound, whereas the trad. "chhati" is a flexy piece of cane. I have an OLD site, search for "gibb dhol" on Google

The dholis are skilled.....but maybe TOO skilled. This isn't real "dhol playing" -- it is playing tabla style on the dhol, not the dhol tradition. Don't get me wrong -- they play dhol very beautifully, excellent....we should recognize however that while this may be great nonetheless it is not the "traditional Punjabi culture" in the usual sense. This is a new style (a few decades old) which may be becoming a new tradition in Pakistan.
