It is past 1857, we have lost our struggle for independence. Survivors are hurting, only Galib is chronicling. Who can write better? This gazal has been sung by many, including Hina Nasrullah of Pakistan (Naseeruddin Shah is in the audience, funny people have started thinking Ghalib has reincarnated, No. Because he never died). I will listen to Miss Kapoor on any given night, because she is singing from heart, not her throat. Just like now, it is dark & cold outside (-5 C), here I am with Ghalib, Miss Shailly Kapoor & with my drinks, life had never been prettier. Thank you Miss for uploading this (Q from the wilderness of Maine, USA, and NB, Canada). Ghalib would not be so gloomy in our company.

घड़ी का कांटा यू चल रहा है, मैं तो यही हूँ, वक़्त गुज़र रहा है । चाहता तो मैं भी हूँ, के रोक लू इसको तूफान जो आने वाला है, हथेली में समेट लू उसको, पर किसको कहाँ में रोक पाता हूँ । लिखता हूँ, क्योंकि दर्द ज़ुबाँ से कह नही पाता हूँ । बेकरारी इतनी है, की बेचैनी भर है । क़रार कब था दिल मे कभी, ये अब बस याद भर है । अब यादों में ही चैन पाता हूँ, इसलिए वक़्त को रोक लेना चाहता हूँ । कोई सुनता नही मेरी, क्योंकि सुनना चाहता नही, मैं फिर भी कहता हूँ, पर सभी से कहना चाहता नही । रोककर लफ़्ज़ों को, दिल को ज़ख्म दिए जाता हूँ, लिखता हूँ, क्योंकि दर्द ज़ुबाँ से कह नही पाता हूँ ।

Waah Waah Riyazul Hassan....what a beautiful couplet! Mirza kehte hein ki woh waqt ab nahin raha jab: 1) Kanon ko aankhon (nazron) pe rashk hota tha kyuNnki nazaron ke aage khoobsoorat nazaara raha karta tha (beloved was there in front of the lover). So the ears used to jealous of the eyes. 2) Na hi nazron ko kanon pe rashk tha jab kanon mein 'beloved' ki awaaz pad jaati thi...So, the eyes used to be jealous of the ears. Ab dono mein (kanon mein aur nazron mein) ab ek taal-mel sa baith gaya hai...ek mutual understanding si aa gayi hai.... But look at the beauty of this sher. The first misra makes the listener feels "aah, what suffering!!! Na toh kanon ko hi koi sukooN hai na nazron ko...what a state of hopelessness!!!" In fact, when one hears the second misra, even upto the halfway of the second misra when Ghalib says 'muddat hui hai' the listener thinks that the lover is saying it's been a while that he has been in this state of despair. But then, towards the end the misra veers completely off course. It turns out that the sher is no longer talking about the state of despair but actually is talking about a small matter-of-fact consolation prize.....ha ha ha...... So, what Mirza is saying is that things are SO awful these days for both eyes and the ears that they have no reason to quarrel. They get along well and are reconciled. The lover has to no longer put up with the jealousies and mutual complaints. The misery of the lover has AT LEAST brought him the relief of peace and quiet - no more whining, no more bickering. That's Ghalib!

In the throes of the vicissitudes of life.. of sufferings..of sorrows..of highs n lows till one hits one's sunset years. You've done justice to this gem. Lovely voice..soulful rendition. The nuances..the wealth of emotions invested in the song by you are appreciable..reflect your abiding love for the poetry. Although a couple of 'अशआर' of the ghazal have not been covered by you, yet you've accomplished a terrific job as the rendition gives a sense of completion..of fulfilment..👌👍
