I started painting miniatures in the late 80s early 90s. Back then everyone was super secretive about how to paint, and straight out refused to share knowledge (it was a pay your dues mentality). Stuff that has taken me years to figure out you can now pick up in a few you tube videos. I think I have learned more in the past few years than in an earlier lifetime lol. Thank you guys so much for this. It has been great to see this change in the gaming world.

Once painted a Skaven army of over 500 models back in the days of warhammer fantasy. And ever since have been completely burned out with army painting. Having restarted the hobby with the new 40k edition...it's been a tedious process... But hey seeing the finished units on the table is awesome! And having other players comment on them is the best kind of motivation! So hang in there and support each others progress and process!

I've been painting armies for 30 years and typically paint 40 man units at a time. What I find helpful in doing so, is sorting the minis basic body shapes into groups and paint those batches. Each subsequent mini goes quicker as you learn where the details are on the mini, and then correct/touch up the whole batch at the end- again sorting into common mistakes needing to be corrected. It definitely helps power through an army this way!

I really hate this approach. For me i pick a unit of 5 and paint one at a time, take a couple of hours each. I get 100000x more enjoyment if a paint one mini at a time then do the same thing over and over

My best advice for painting things that take a long time whether it be a large model or tons of individual ones is put something on that progresses like a book or a show anime, even a long playlist of your favorite artists etc. I find that when things progress it works extremely well as you see your progression with the progression of what you are watching. If you watch a movie or a video and it ends… you are still stuck painting so you have to then watch something else that will eventually “end”. For example I watched all 8 Harry Potters once and it was satisfying that when I finished all my painting I got to watch the end and was happy that the plot evolved as did my army. That’s my advise at least cheers!

I went in a different direction: I just started playing skirmish games instead. I can spend as much time on a model as I want. I do not have to paint the same model 30+ times (or 100+ times in the case of my friends soul blight army) and I do not hate my hobby. Pretty good if you ask me.

A test model is absolutely vital. Whether you follow a tutorial or not. After the 1st batch of models you will likely modify the process for the next, to make it more efficient. If I hated army painting I'd commission it out.

Love the color concept and how you broke it down to a timely and do able approach, rather than doing a marathon of getting lost in too many details only you will know about! Painting entire armys is really painful, but once done can be so satisfying.

Batch/speed painting is all about the compromises you're willing to make to paint stuff faster, and nailing down the steps before you get stuck in. This generally requires a bunch of planning. For example, Zumikito has ONE color of brown he tints with a variety of washes. But he could have airbrushed the whole mini brown - which would probably require painting the parts to be metallic in black and some touch up afterwards, but likely would have been faster than painting 70% of the model brown with a brush. But maybe not! The only way to be sure is to do test models. A couple of hours at the start can save you dozens of hours once you get stuck in. A bottle of paint stripper can turn your failed efforts back into grey plastic in very little time, so there's no reason to not experiment. Motivation wise, I find breaking stuff into chunks to be helpful. A batch of 20 minis is a huge batch! But you might be able to do 5 minis in a single evening. That way you're not stuck doing the same color for 3 hours in a row before moving to the next color for the next three hours.

Personally, when painting an army, i NEVER finish them all to start off with, i get the base 3 colors on there, then come back slowly over time and work on finishing them how i want them to be finished with better shading and everything. You can spend days if not weeks on a single model, if you're playing with them, its so much nicer to see some kind of color on them. Even if its just a nice airbrush, with a few base colors that can be highlighted. It'll make you feel like you're accomplishing something.

That's soft. Try what I did with 120 clanrats all at the same time, no small batches, just all in one go. Well, for some of the main colors I did some batches of everything between 6-20, but after that with all the chips, scratches, claws/teeth, and eyes (done with red contrast all over and around each eye, then painting the eye ball white, then doing a fluo orange over it all) in batches of 120 for each step is a killer.... It was hard to see the end sometimes, but MAN was it satisfying when they were all done!! :D Anyway, great vid, they look awesome!! I kinda wanna try to do this style for 1-2 armies in the future :P

I've purchased so many models with a plan to paint them. I've painted a grand total of 1 space marine and 1 tyranid warrior so far in about a month. But it took a long time trying to friend the right colors until I was happy with them. Hoping that the rest of the armies will go by fairly quick now that I have a "plan"

When I started 40k in 2nd Edition(!), I painted one of the starter box Goff orks in one month. I used enamel paints and well, it turned out very well, if a bit flat because what is shading? Now I painted the Termagants from the Leviathan box... all 20 of them in one batch because I knew if I only do 10, I will never touch the other 10 because I will be sick of it. Yes, I hated myself for that decision, but what I hate more is having halfway painted minis so I pulled through. Followed by 11 Neurogaunts, who were surprisingly fun to paint! I love these little critters!

One tip I learned from batch painting the Leviathan tyranids: if you make your 'reward' a glass of wine, theres no problem in getting that messy effect. Also I live the two tone style and tried your earlier video that was more Cursed City style.... But my biggest queation: wtf is causing all this glow from the ground?!?

Great video, lots of good tips, as I don't play I just love to do the painting. Recently challenged myself to paint a ten figure set at once (I usually just do 1-2 figures at a time) from a box , I did five for the display case and the remaining five I turned into a diorama, the miniatures were Warhammer Nighthaunt Chainrasps and I must admit it was fun to see how far I've come from just starting three years ago . I also prefer to have a podcast playing in the background then switch to music when the episode I was listening to ends, dies make the time fly.

i still remember the Enamel video, omg did it hurt a lot... BUt yeah, in this video, you`re right, Structure is key, batches of 5-10 are perfect for small models, and if you have a bigger one, just do that one, vehicles as in tanks, can be done all together for the bases, but when the time comes for blending and shades, and texture, do them one at a time. Just finished 3 Rhinos of the Death Guard in 2 days, that means 2 sittings of 5 hours each. I wasnt fast, but i had my share of fun.

My opinion. Painting with oils, quickpaints and inks on preshade is more quickly. At the end just do highlights and its done. on metal just use stipling. Nice result for quick painting. AND, if you do some weathering...

These books look cool, but I’m still skeptical to buy them… there’s lots of hype, but it feels like all of the coverage of them has been paid endorsements. The creators should consider some unpaid reviews by reputable painters/creators - cause it just feels a bit too heavy on the hype/biased promotion now.
@liquidhelium
@liquidhelium Жыл бұрын
Creator here! The way I thought about this is the vast majority of the painters who wrote the actual tutorials for the books basically already have a reputation that precedes them, such as David Arroba, Arnau Lázaro, Marc Masclans... I didn't write about the numerous accolades by the different painters because it would honestly take too much space. The combined number of awards they have won in the industry is ridiculously high, so I thought that would be enough of a guarantee that their tutorials are in fact good. Once the books are printed I do plan to find independent reviewers who may be open to publish such reviews, but I don't really know where to start looking, I'll have to do a lot of research :)

Although this looks great, it's not a good way to paint armies fast. Airbrush and OSL will get you the result you want faster although more messy. Considering the time you spend in applying the OSL with the brush, that time might as well have been spent applying highlights and washes like any normal method. Contrast paint is also a massive boost in speed.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. The most important step to army painting is to start painting. The second most important part is to continue painting. If you do those two things you will have a painted army, without fail, at some future time. Getting the perfect plan delays that for what is arguably, little benefit. Batch size, though, is a good point. The right batch size will make a project fly, and the wrong batch size will make it crawl.
