@@vanshagarwal2362 I don't know how you know that. For female Brits, you've got Virginia Wade, and that's kind of it. Even if she's only a local legend, let's say, nobody male or female would take on a whole crowd with such conviction like that unless they knew what they were talking about. Perhaps even the crowd knew who she was, so as to make her statement all the more palatable.

I'm not a fan of either Roger or Sasha. Let's park aside how the fed fans react. Although it is well within the rules, I don't think neither of legends Roger, Rafa or Novak will stop the game like this. And apparently Mr Zverev took the advantage because of this. I did see the replay several times and the ball did drop and the ball boy started to move before Roger hit the ball. He could call the stop earlier but he called it after he saw the quality of the return. It is within the rules so he has the right to call it or not. If the return is bad, I believe he will not stop the game. I would say it is unlucky for this to happen.

I am a lifelong Federer fan but I don't think being someone's fan is ever an excuse for rudeness. The crowd was so disrespectful to Zverev, he totally did the right thing and it was within the rules and not his fault at all. I'm sure if it was Roger who had stopped the point nobody would have had a problem with it. It also makes me sad when someone - in ANY sport - feels they have to apologise for winning. He played great tonight and it was a deserved victory.

That is a section of the fanbase; not all the fans reacted in the same manner for sure even inside the O2. It was a pity that it happened after an exhilarating performance from Sascha but it is what it is. BTW all the three fanbases have their logics and facts to call their respective heroes as the GOAT and tend to forget how lucky they are to have seen these 3 legends produce masterclasses time and again.

The honest truth is that many people were way too disappointed at Federer losing, and more so angry at Zverev for being the "bad guy" who had to take out the fan favorite. This ultimately bled into them blaming the entire loss/win on the incident of the ball kid. This is immature and shameful for any tennis fan. If you are a true fan of tennis as a sport, and of Federer as a professional athlete rather than as a celebrity figure, then you would not be booing at Zverev. That's so disgusting, and even Federer himself said there was no need to boo. You're more salty than the guy you "support" and are a "fan" of. Disgusting. I am a huge fan of Federer but that means I respect him AND his opponents AND the sport of tennis, as Federer himself does.

There was absolutely no need for Alex to apologize to the crowd. Roger would have done the same if it happened on the other side of the court. The crowd needs to learn how to respect other players and more importantly respect the rules of the game. ( I'm a Roger fan)

Dude!!! Honestly! Alexander Zverev DESERVES TO WIN WITHOUT apologizing. You have no idea how many times he has been through downhill...and finally this young lad THROUGH HIS HARDWORK AND PERSEVERANCE makes progress and even WINS the match!!!! He was never supposed to be treated that bad okay. Rules are rules. Winners are winners. It's like telling a doctor not to fall sick. Even doctors fall sick. Winners also lose. And through failures YOU LEARN TO WIN. NOW THAT HE HAS WON,HE DESERVES RESPECT AND APPRECIATION. I'm so proud of Sascha....he is incredible. At this young age he has achieved this...we all should be appreciating him!!!

i fully agree with that, the rule is kinda stupid. that being said though, zverev didn't make the rule, and he was 100% in the right to stop the point. not only because unexpected stuff like that DOES distract you, also just imagine federer had stepped on that ball. not that he was close, but zverev could not have known at the point he raised his arm how quickly the ballboy would recover it...

total respect to Annabel croft for what she said to the crowd, something needed saying, and their behaviour and disrespect towards zverev was disgusting. Zverev shouldn't have been apologising as he did absolutely nothing wrong and it was right that the point was re played. Federer dealt with it all with class at the end, and accepted the decision with no complaint. sections of the Crowd embarrassed themselves to be honest and made themselves look pretty dim not understanding a simple rule that was obvious to the rest.
@peter4099

There is no one in this thread who has commented on the spirit of the rule (and how players enforce it in practice) and looked at when Zverev actually called the fault, after the ball was picked up again and all danger was completely averted. Consider whether Zverev would have done the same if it had been Federer's serve? Consider whether Zverev would have done the same if he was far ahead in the point and just a simple smash away from winning the point? I'm not saying that Zverev necessarily did anything wrong, but to blindly insist that as long as it's in the rules should be synonymous with displaying good sportsmanship, doesn't make sense. In Zverev's defense, I would, however, say that I expect all professionals would have done the same in a match where small margins are so crucial, and the incentive to show sportsmanship is too small compared to their eagerness to win the match.
