It's a good job you spotted this ewe she must feel so much better now.

Just wondering do you have to treat the ewes skin afterwards to kill off any remaining maggots and what do you do with the maggoty fleece? I love watching your videos
@juliaquets16794 жыл бұрын
Not sure. Susannah might use the always popular blue spray or some other antibiotic treatment.

Once fleece is shorn and if maggots have not broken into her skin, (which luckily they hadn't) I don't need to do any other treatment.

Poor ewe. What do you do with the maggoty wool? Burn it?
@SuzannaCramptonIreland4 жыл бұрын

Fly strike can leave an awful smell in your nostrils for a few days. 🤢🤮 Unfortunately, if you can't catch the one with fly strike, they can't be treated. ☹️

Do you kill the maggots in the sheared wool? Or do they die because their food source is gone. Would hate to see them all hatch out into flies.

I shake them out of shorn fleece and wild bird eat them

She'll be much more comfortable now - they must itch like hell!
@juliaquets16794 жыл бұрын
Angela KM Worse than that because they are literally eating her alive. 🤢 So she will be in agony, and dying of infection after they've had a day or two at her.

I heard you say "There's no money in wool". I didn't know that. Is it because you have a small flock, the breed, or sheep in general?
@SuzannaCramptonIreland3 жыл бұрын
The market has fallen out the bottom of the wool. Farmers do not make up even the cost of shearing sheep. Unless they create a market like I have done with mine. Black wool is even worth less than white wool as you can not dye it any colours

@@SuzannaCramptonIreland So really amazing that you created a market by designing the blankets and having them made at Cushendale.

*IF YOU EVER HAVE A WOUND THAT IS INFECTED WITH MAGGOTS, I HOPE THAT THE DOCTOR JUST KEEPS PLAYING WITH YOUR HAIR AND TAKES A LONG TIME BEFORE HE OR SHE TREATS YOUR WOUND. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH THIS POOR EWE !!!*

Thank you for your comment. I’m sure you would do a better job than myself in both explaining and treating health issues in my flock of sheep. It sounds like you have a vast amount of experience in treating fly strike within your own flock. Thankfully this ewe was spotted and treated with respect and gentleness. Next time I have a fly strike issue I shall get in touch and you can come do a much better job than myself. Though I wouldn’t want to wait that long as the sheep would suffer. I respect your obvious vast experience. I hope your flock of sheep are healthy and well. By the way, Maggots are often used by doctors to clean wounds that have become infected in humans.
