Just did this a couple of days ago as well with Eric Min - was a huge group to start (1,000 plus) but only 250 or so finished. It's a long ride and very much agreed that its much better to do in a group. I found a group within the group and did the flats in blue/grey power range like you did but we took the climb closer to 4 w/kg each time, still in yellow, not orange or red (until the last lap where our group also got excited about the finish and went closer to 4.5 w/kg). That got the ride done in under 5 hours and still kept it manageable. Taking the hill faster each lap definitely had me using glucose more than fat as you said. But I found that a 500 mL bottle with 60g carbs (maltodextrin, fructose) every hour was enough to keep me fueled for the ride without crashing. It was about 8 min of threshold on the hill, 2 minutes of rest on the descent, and then around 15 minutes of z1/z2 grey/blue on the flats per lap. I used the descent on each lap to take breaks. I found that I could even get off the bike completely and stretch while still keeping with the group.

@@E.M.B.R 5hr That is an amazing effort! I wanted to join your group ride with Erik, but it started too late at 17:00 my local time. Very nice summary of your ride, now other riders who are stronger can opt for 5hr with your tips. Thank you, and congrats on the PRL 🥳🙌
