I am super excited, like a little kid (I am in my 50s now) about the Spectrum Next. I missed the kickstarter but hoping before 2019 is over a 2nd kickstarter is done OR these come for sale outside of kickstarter. I very much want to buy one and learn to program with. Will be fun. I have been joining all the Facebook groups and forums and asking lots of questions as I am brand new to Sinclair systems. Last time I used one was at a friends house in the early 80s, a ZX80. Never owned one but will this year... and hopefully I can buy a Next!

Really impressive stuff, Henrique - everything looking spot-on compatibility-wise and the board itself is incredibly tidy. Very much looking forward to seeing it housed in the final keyboard!

It's nice to know how its even gone beyond that V1 board now, it just keeps going from strength to strength.

That's looking fantastic! I will so be backing this up, also I love the housing design renders. The design, for me, is just spot on. Waiting for the Kickstarter and the final product;)

I'm in love! I have never wanted a computer so much since the original Amiga 1000. I sincerely hope this will be my next and last computer purchase. I do want Rick's spiffy enclosure though, not a cobbled up one even though the rubber keyed 48k I was very fond of. Fantastic job guys.

I am SO backing this when it is on Kickstarter. This is awesome and - without naming names - it is good to have the Sinclair brand reclaimed by people who actually give a toss.

Ahhh, at least they thought about gold plating the extension connector. How much had I suffered from the original tinned one oxydization... :( I had ended up thickening the contacts with solder so the Interface 1 and MGT+D connectors were so tight they would stop crashing the Spectrum every time someone was sneezing in the area !

Really looking forward to this. Looks like you guys are doing a fantastic job! :) Concern..: What about keyboard layouts? I ask because there is a danish text adventure ("Skabet"), which needs the 3 special danish letters Æ, Ø and Å as text input..

Personally, I would stick the classic bus on a separate PCB, linked by a plug and ribbon. Make it replaceable due to wear and tear. I remember edge connector ribbon cables being a popular 3rd party add on for this very reason when I was a spotty 14 year old.

I don't see the reason for this computer - original spectrum is cheaper. From historical point of view the new features are not found in original spectrum, new computer do it much better.

PS/2 and no at least two or three USB ports? Sorry, but this is a fail. I would put four USB ports at least, so able to put: keyboards, mouse, usb pendrive or hdd, ethernet, etc What's the difference with ZX-UNO, the core in MiST FPGA board and zx-evo? github.com/tslabs/zx-evo
@ErikDvorak
@ErikDvorak 7 жыл бұрын
At least 4 USBs ports on Speccy?! I'm sure you are just kidding... Simplicity is name of the game here, not trying to be something that it isn't to begin with. The less holes that beautiful case has, the better.
@timofonic
@timofonic 7 жыл бұрын
USB makes everything simpler: Instead different ports for certain kind of hardware, the same interface could be used for a wide variety of hardware to be connected to it. It makes it more simple and efficient. If you want to connect PS/2 or serial devices (for example), you could use an adapter. The same could be used for interfaces like audio input if a powerful USB implementation could be done too. Without this integration and sophistication, I consider reconfigurable computers are lacking the good part of software emulation and still showing the bad one of legacy hardware.
@adamsfusion
@adamsfusion 7 жыл бұрын
Because when it comes to an FPGA, it's way easier to interface with a PS/2 keyboard (parallel directly onto the chip) vs USB (serial negotiation + HID translations). Sure, you could totally use a pen drive... sometimes... when you got one that interfaced right and didn't use some special method of revealing itself to the device ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
