Hello and welcome to the sixth episode of ZX Spectrum versus Amstrad CPC games.
In this video, 8 games released in 1989 are shown running on both machines so you can see how different (or similar) they were. Games like Stormlord, Fantasy World Dizzy, Myth and more.
Thanks for watching and let me know in the comments section below who "wins".
And, of course, see you in the next RetroNoName episode

both had pros and cons if you look at them visually. I adore the Amstrad with it's vivid colours but it is a chunky system to be fair. The speccy is a little less chunky but single colours. The C64 is a little like the Amstrad but with perfect scrolling, great music and a blander but more realistic tone of colours. As cheesy as it sounds, we were all winners back then and I'm just so glad I get to play each of these systems so easily these days because I never will grow out of playing these amazing machines

Very nicely written, and couldn't agree more.

Well the C64 was Commodore's attempt to match Jay Miner's older 8bit platform but didn't really get there, in so many aspects. The CPC was a true modern compact computer that lacked the hardware but it was so good in so many ways that even programmers of British software houses referred to the system as the "true computer". Speccy is such a unique machine , simple but capable .

If it wasn’t for the colour restrictions that caused colour clash on th Zx Spectrum… it would have been a monumental machine!!!

My bro had a spectrum, I had the cpc so we were always arguing on which was the best system. My dad had the atari XL. Something about the spectrum made it special though, probably the simplicity of it. Fond memories either way.

1. Rick Dangerous, looks better on the cpc but Spectrum looks to play better. 2. Stormlord, both look excellent but the cpc pallet takes this. 3. Ghouls n Ghosts, Spectrum definitely wins this one. 4. After the war, both poor games, just the colour Palette of the cpc takes this one 5. Myth, Spectrum takes this round. Cpc looks like a Spectrum port. 6. Fantasy world Dizzy, I like the Spectrum pallette more. The cpc also slows down. 7. Cabal, both are great Arcade conversations but i like the Spectrum more. 8. Test drive 2 i put as a draw. Thanks, great video as always.

Ghouls n Ghosts, is much better on the Amstrad, half the time the speccy colour clash makes it unplayable as you can see anything.

For me Cabal plays much better on Spectrum, also (for me) Dizzy, Ghouls and Test Drive 2 are better on Speccy. I couldn't drive the car normally on TD2 on Amstrad. It's just something that makes it nearly unplayable (or I'm just so incompetent - who knows :) )

Sorry.. better on the CPC.. I just have a vision of the dude hitting himself on the with a dead Squirrel. Because his Gameboy is not in colour, advert.. The Z80 rules. But only when it's encased in rubber.. I'm off to play my wonderswan. Dam...No sun.... till tomorrow.. 🙄

Yeah, I think that's about right. Ghouls n Ghosts is a clear win for the Spec. Cabal looks weird on the CPC, seems a chunk slower too. Also why did they give Dizzy that weird green tint?

i think the speccy just wins on Myth, Dizzy, Cabal, and Test Drive, others better on the Amstrad.

Almost the same list for me, I would just replace Myth with Ghouls 'n Ghosts. There is something on G'nG on Amstrad that I don't like. Maybe scrolling, ... I don't know. It just plays better on ZX for me personally.

@@retrononame while the scrolling isn't great it's far from the worse I have seen on the amstrad, it's more flip screen than scroll. I just find colour clash tend to make some games too frustrating to play. In the right hand the amstrad was awesome.

Of that, I agree 100%. Amstrad, in the right hands, was a fantastic machine. I didn't know much about it back in the 80s, and was quite surprised by it's capabilities (and i LOVE the palette that is available on it).

@@retrononame sadly my time with the Amstrad (late 80s early 90) was on a green screen, i never knew it had colours back then.

For me personally - Cabal, Dizzy, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Test Drive 2 play better on ZX Spectrum. So, for my taste, this one is a draw :)

Still graphics, cpc wins, but most play better on the speccie (notably ghouls and Rick dangerous, without the Jerky push scroll). Stormlord equally bad on both :)

I would rather have colour clash and higher rez graphics ( High Rez, no that's a laugh ) . Than a shitty palette and low rez blocks, any day..

Bombjack and Scooby Doo are great on the Speccy but still a touch better on the Amstrad. I've been testing both versions on a modded psp go. I'll have to try Barbarian (Palace) as that s one o f my fave all time 8 bit games.

You can't have everything, but the ZX Spectrum is nearly there. It has colourclash, a shitty palette, few colours, lower resolution than the CPC, no free placement of colour, only a beeper. Considering the restricted Spectrum hardware, it is impressive what they make the machine do. On the other hand, the Amstrad CPCs achilles is the quick and dirty lower quality Spectrum port
