Corvette C6 Z51 Track Review at Buttonwillow - as fast as my S2000?

My first time tracking a RWD besides my S2000/NSX! This 2006 C6 Corvette has the Z51 package, which includes some useful upgrades for track use. Let's see if I can beat my modded S2000's lap time with a stock C6!

Had a S2000 AP2, now C7 Z51. I have fond memories of that car, but there is no going back.

I have been looking at these recently, and doing some research, the 08+ with the LS3s also got a steering change that may address your feel issue. And with prices of these between 18-22k or so now they are quite the bargain i feel.

Nice video. I tracked a Base C6 for several years then moved to a C6Z/Z07. You want to wave bye bye to a s2000 with that C6 Z51? The Conti DW’s on track suck. Ask me how I know. The turn in and dead feel in the steering is a direct result. DW’s have a soft sidewalls, which don’t give you a crisp turn in at corner entry. I replaced with MPSS tires. Then went to R888’s HP+ pads suck. I smoked a set in the mountains on North Carolina. You need to run Carbotech XP 12 /10 front/ rear. Change fluid to motul or my favorite Castrol SRF. Last swap the Z51 sway bars for Z06 bars front and back. The tires plus a bigger sway bar in the rear gives it a more neutral feel and the understeer/ understeer issue disappear.

I just took delivery of my XP8 pads 2 days ago after smoking a set of Hawk on BW...Is corvette too heavy for XP8s?

kevin Li I started with XP8’s front and back,but I would go to XP 10 front and 8’s rear for street tires. If you move to R comps go to XP12 front 10’s rear. And add cooling ducts for better rotor cooling.

Excellent video as usual, I'm very glad you mentioned the tires and their performance. I put those on my NC1 Miata this summer, but didn't have a chance to get in any track time this year and I was curious how they'd hold up as a street tire. They are of course excellent on the street all-around. 👍 I'm very curious how I'd enjoy a C6 Z51, it's kinda insane how much car you can get for so cheap these days with a Vette!

can the usual C6 (with no Z51) be used lightly on a track (no record attempts, just decent perfomance driving)? Does it suffer oil starvation on usual street tires (not the semi slicks)?
