Great video and clear educational points 1. Transmission 2. Reflection 3. Coating 4. Mrc filter good: resistant to finger print, water etc 5. Thickness of lens filter: if wide angle lens a thick filter might appear in shots. So test first or go for a thinner thickness to avoid risk of filter appearing in wide angle lens shots.

Reflexions come from a non Anti Reflex coated lens and not only from a poor UV Filter. You can make a lens that is perfect AR- Coated, so that you don´t even see any colours any more (those little glass- "Papers" for Microscoping e.g.) and has no UV Filter at all and it is transparent.
@Michael-ij6kg

Holding up a lens and looking for reflections only shows how reflective it is. Transmission = opacity/ clearness People want a lens coated in a manner to reduce the refractive index hence reducing reflections.

I enjoyed this vid, but the test you did with the blacklight was misleading. UV is not visible light - all you were seeing was the visible portion of the blacklight's total output. However, as you say, UV is largely irrelevant in digital photography.

Where in that video does the narrator say that UV light is visible to the naked eye? "infrared is light that we can't see" In fact, any wavelength which is outside of the visible light spectrum is not visible to the naked eye.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 6 жыл бұрын
Infrared light is invisible, and ultraviolet light is also invisible. Per definition. Wikipedia defines it, “Ultraviolet (UV) is an electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength from 100 nm to 400 nm, shorter than that of visible light but longer than X-rays.” Note the words “shorter than that of visible light”. If the light is visible, it may be violet, but not ultraviolet.

any other light other than visible light is not visible. He is not looking at the light output of the light source, but the illuminated portion of the bank note (little spots) which signifies the presence of uv light.

Great video. The most important job for a 1A UV filter these days is primarily lens protection so I'm not that fussed with the filter's uv qualities. What really irritates me is the number of "bridge" cameras being made with no screw mount built in at all which means you either have to buy a cumbersome adapter or go without and risk damage to the primary element. This is a cheap move on the part of camera manufacturers and unforgivable in my book.

A UV filter does NOT.... - Protect your images - film or digital - against being ruined by UV light. All digital cameras have an inbuilt UV and IR filter, and it's been several decades since film makers found ways of making the film insensitive to UV light. - Protect the lens or camera against Ultra Violet light, because UV light will not damage it. - Protect the lens against physical damage. The filter will break very easily, while the front element will not. And if you drop the camera or the lens, the internal gears will be damaged much more easily than the front element. A UV filter DOES.... - Protect the front element against dirt, grease and other more harmful substances that might otherwise get onto it. - Provide extra protection against dust and liquids getting into the lens over time. - Protect your lens against tiny scratches from cleaning the lens, because you will not have to clean it so often.

aside from the actual visual differences, why would anyone want to put and inferior glass on top of a superior glass. Now if your starting off and don't have much money, some protection is better than none but eventually your going to need the better protection. a person serious about the quality of their image wouldn't want to loose sharpness.

From what I have found UV filters are as good at blocking UV as they are for protecting your lens, which means they do nothing, a total waste of money and space. It takes huge amount of force to break a lens and also to scratch them, and even with scratches most of the time you can't tell in finished image. And even when the lens does break it's not actually the glass but the mechanics of the lens that get damaged. So I guess you could use the UV filter to protect the threads but there are cheaper hoods and rings to do that

Humans can not see UV (ultraviolet) or IR (infrared) light. The blue light you see is probably NEAR the UV spectrum which you can see and passes through the filter. I think a pocket camera or your cell phone camera can. Security cameras see IR for night vision. Most high end cameras have a UV filter built-in. Point an IR remote or your "UV" light at one of those directly and then through a filter to see if there is a difference.

A lens hood should do that, and even if it got scratched there are videos on line that show even a scratched lens is not much of a problem. Forgiven4ever It is useful to protect your lens front lens from getting scratches. But as a lens protector it needs to have good light transmission qualities and thus the reason for a good quality UV lens. In theory a pure glass lens with no coating etc is all you need as a protector but I doubt they exist.
