Which lens filter system do you think would work best for you?

NiSi guy here. Sad that I broke my 10-stop filter the other day though... Love the quality of their filters and I love the spinning, low profile circular polarizer that comes with the filter holder. I find that I'm leaving the filter holder behind most of the time these days and just using the circpolarizer even for video. The Haida looks kinda cool, and I totally agree about a magnetic ring that would allow you to use the Freewell with anything, maybe that's a signature product deal for you in the future with them!

Thanks for sharing Chris! Freewell actually responded about that this morning. Apparently the issue is twofold... 1. Someone else has a patent on that design. And 2. It causes big netting because the system becomes too thick. I guess it was just wishful thinking lol.

@Dunna Did It you should check out the Manfrotto Xume system, it is like the Freewell magnetic system but you can use your own filters.

I use the Nisi system when I take landscapes and nature shots and cicular polarisation and variable NDs from Kenko for everyday use.

Being completely new to using filters, the magnetic ones look to be the easiest to implement. Could totally be wrong on that, but I'm definitely intrigued by them. Thanks for the comparisons, Dunna. I found them helpful.

You're totally right, the catch with the magnetic ones is that you need somewhere to put them when you're not using them. But I love how easy they are to use!

I've been enjoying playing around with different variable ND filters on the market. As much as you may lose a little bit of quality, for the most part it is almost indistinguishable (unless you're shooting for a billboard). It's a great solution for daily vlogs/candid shoots where your lighting may be changing frequently, and you don't want to fuss about switching filters all the time!

Agreed! I'm a VND guy myself as well. It's just so quick and easy. And if you couple that with something like the alter rfs so you can "remove" the ND effect without actually having to screw it off and store it somewhere... you're golden!

I am currently working with the 82mm PM variable ND filters and they are so great for style of running and gunning photos and video. I have been shooting a lot of skate videos lately so being able to just keep the filter on and just change the lighting as needed has been awesome!! Thanks for the info man!

I have both and use both all the time. I use my 6-9 mostly when I am doing long exposure photography and my 2-5 when I am actually filming videos. 🤘🤘

I did get the 82 mm step ups but I find it problematic with VNDs it sometimes rotates the wrong thing. Or taking off the filter the step up will come off with it I rather just buy the 77 and 82 as I need.

I heard getting an 82mm filter and using step-up rings is the way to go. Good to hear this is basically backed up. 👍🏽 That being said, my next filter will be that same PM PolarPro ND filter. Great video!

I love my NISI..... the glass is by far super quality But the Haida system is a bit better how you can drop filters behind the adapter So I use my NISI Glass with my Hadia system and it's the perfect combo Thanks, Dunna regards, Rick

Thats awesome! The beauty of the 100mm filters is that you can swap like that. Do you find the nisi ones fit ok with their little gasket type thing?

@@dunnadidit At first, the filters that had the gaskets were a bit difficult to get in but after a few times of sliding them in and out, they became a bit easier. I had thought about removing the gasket on the 100x100's but really I mostly use the Gradient filters (100x150) on the front of the Hadia and use the Haida ND circular filter in back for a perfect combo Thanks for another Great video regards, rick

Filters are my biggest ball ache 😂 I use to use circular filters for landscape photography, then moved to the NiSi V5 system which I love! Then I got into filming so use a tiffen variable ND filter! What I hate the most are step up rings, the amount of plier marks mine have in them from where I have tried to get them undone is ridiculous 😂

Alter RFS seems great, the only thing that is a disadvantage is the fact that it apparently vignettes on wide-angle lenses... Any way to go around that? Cool video dude, keep it coming!

Honestly, all 4 of these systems gave me some minor vignetting if I pushed them wide enough with step up rings and such. I think the best way to go for less vignetting is the 100mm systems. And getting the alter rfs+ instead of step up rings first helps as well.

Vignetting is so easy to fix, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's definitely easy to fix in photos but it can be a lot tougher in video when you cant push the images around as much. Also, using image stabilization you might notice that your vignette moves around a lot. I remember when I saw that for the first time it confused the hell out of me lol.

Because vignetting happens around the edges, sometimes using a step up ring to a larger filter, it can slightly minimize the vignette. It is minimal and it will only be noticeable on some focal lengths but it’s there.

Hey Dunna - Thank you for creating and posting this very helpful video. I have a quick question. ND filters are often described as "sunglasses for your lens" - Makes sense I guess. So I have to use prescription sunglasses and before ordering I am offered 3 choices of colour tint; a brown, a green or a blue. I Choose blue everyday of the week because as well as the reduction in glare, the blue just looks very natural to me. Of the variable ND filters I have seen, they are all based on a brown colour. So here is my question - eventually - Are there different colours of ND filters available ? - If so, have you tried any? - Thank you for reading my "life story" and I hope you can come back to me. Hey Peter! Generally, ND’s are designed to be as transparent color wise as possible. If an ND filter looks like it has a color to it, it’s probably made that way to specifically FIX any color shift that it might have added... that being said, there’s no such thing as a perfect filter and all of them add some kind of slight shift in color. Really high quality ones will get closer to no shift than cheaper ones (usually) that said, I’m sure if you dig into some Google searching, someone has probably made some effect filters designed to add specific colors!

This was an awesome explainer vid. Seeing four options was cool and all with unique features. You didn’t like the 100mm filter systems due to the time it takes to setup and remove filters but wouldn’t it be ez to just slide out the filters when you want to shoot without them?

It’s not so much about the filters themselves but about setting up and carrying around the system that you need to put the filters into. It’s super great for certain things but for my style of mostly run and gun hybrid shooting it’s not the best.

Great video as always Dunna! Would love to see a review/comparison between the Manfrotto XUME magnetic filter system and the Freewell system. The Manfrotto systems works super well but you do get some vignetting at super wide angles. I wonder if the Freewell has a thinner filter ring that would eliminate some of the vignetting

I didn't have any vignetting issues at 17mm with any of these. Keep in mind I'm using a step up ring from 67mm to 77mm. So that might help.

Generally, the stock lens hood won’t work, but maybe you can get some other hoods that are designed to fit on top of a filter system. Thanks for the kind words Glen!

I have wide lenses with built-in hoods that have no filter threads. To deal with that, I ordered a custom adapter to slide onto the lens hood and provide a mount for my NiSi 100mm filter holder. Works awesome, and is even faster to attach to the lens because you don't have to screw onto any threads. I can dig through my email and find more info about if you want?

Thanks for the Video, Been a couple of years and an update would be great. For my A7IV I often shoot pictures and quickly want to do video with a VND filter. Does the Haida Make a VND filter? That would be great. I guess if they do not maybe the Tilta Mirage is the next best thing although bulkier. I often wonder if the magnetic type filters systems spin when trying to dial in with a VND filter on top? Any new products with this type of system. Thanks!

Dunna Did It I own one but I dont really recommend it if you want to use it for variable ND filter because the magnetic is weak and it rotates with the filter everytime when you adjust the brightness. Also, switching filters are easier but still annoying. Filter flipper is much better.

Haha I love it! It really depends on the focal length. On a super wide lens, that might be a problem with vignetting. But I’ve done it with my apsc 30mm before and had no problem using like 5 step ups. That being said, I highly recommend getting single step ups instead of those packs. Check out the link in the description. You can get a single step up from 55 to 67 (or at least you should be able to)

The Alter system seems to be the most versatile and least likely to lose stuff for the run and gun. I have a hard enough time keeping up with lens caps and I've yet to leave the same room when I'm shooting. ☺ You'd need a filter caddy to keep up with everything if you're on the move. Do you remember the first National Treasure movie, and they had to use the Ben Franklin glasses to read the map (or whatever hidden image it was)? It had the flip up colored filters/gels. I wonder if a company could come up with that, in the same vein as stacked 100mm filters? Everything is kept together and you just put in what you need by flipping up or down the filter. 100mm glass with the versatility of the Freewell system, and the ability to turn "on/off" your filter scheme of the Alter. If you invent this as the Dunna branded system, send me a little love. ;) Great video!

Yes. I think I’m actually going to do that. But mostly so I can vlog with my non stabilized lenses again. But for a lot of people I wouldn’t actually recommend it. A6400 is great bang for buck.

Alter..... Hmmm ordered September 2019 delivered January 2020 with extra charges because they sent it to me from China. I live in Europe. So 2 system with a cost 180 euros!!!! This is so overpriced. You will find in Amazon system like this for 30 euros with no extra charges. Very disappointing
