This is, by far, the best video on ZZ propagation that I've seen, and I watched quite a few. I'd be surprised if anyone has any questions....don't think you missed anything 😊. I propagated leaves from a stem that broke off (hence the search last year on what to do with it). I had about a dozen leaves, plopped them in water and five survived. But I didn't know I could have left them in after they rotted and the rhizome still may have formed. I did throw those out. I wish I had kept a time frame but I have nice green shoots growing now from those I planted. It took four or five months after planting but then all of a sudden they just took off. The original leaves are still there and still nice and green. Don't know what function they are serving but they haven't died off yet. And you are right about the odd/no growth pattern.....I have several pots of ZZs and they are all sprouting new shoots in January and February here in freezing Chicago. To make a long story even longer, after watching your video, I'm inspired to chop a stem or two. This is such a long process but so satisfying to succeed!

I had a rescue plant from my building and I found one of these rhizomes in the soil of a different kind of plant. I had no idea what it was, so I planted it in a small Tera cotta pot and months later it finally started to grow, it took a while and I only recently figured out it was one of these zz plants. My favorite! My large green ZZ I’ve had for a few years will need repotting in the spring. It was a nice medium size when I bought it and seemed easy and happy however I had a lot of dark sort of purplish spotting on the large stems, possibly from too much light??? I moved it from NE to NW corner window and then I noticed a couple smaller branches turned yellow. I only water about once a month so IDK…I left it alone and now I see 2 new baby shoots coming 💚 Oops make that 3 👍I water once a month on the first so it’s almost time 🤞MY Raven I purchased on 2/15/20 at HDepot a Costa farm plant planted in what looked like pure peat moss. I resisted the urge to repot until late this past summer and gave it some new soil and a terracotta pot. So far nothing is happening except for a tiny stem broke off that I put in water. I think the growth habit is slow just like the propagation. Funny thing is somehow I ended up with a tiny bulb and I wasn’t even sure what it was but I put it in a 2” pot and I think it’s a tiny green zz. I loved this video I’ll watch it again.

Just a picky bit of terminology here--there are no stems on a ZZ Plant (other than underground rhizomes). The first cutting you show in the video is actually a leaf. The others you call "single leaves" are leaflets--think of a compound leaf, like on an ash tree. OK, the pedant will shut up now. ;)

Thanks for your video! Just wondering if the roots and rhizomes developed quicker propagating from the leaf vs the stem? In your opinion was one method better than the other?
@robparsons2133 жыл бұрын
Last year about this time I purchased a leaflet cutting of a variegated ZZ. It had a rhizome and a small number of roots--in short very much like those in your video here. Just this week, I see it's finally putting up a new leaf. I'm both overjoyed to get growth and relieved I haven't killed it. A year seems like a long time for a cutting already rooted when I got it and I just wondered what your experience is with respect to timing. (When I bought it, the seller gave me a four-leaflet Raven ZZ leaf cutting as a nice little premium and while it looks fine, it has yet to actually do anything, at least above ground.)
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
I fully expect this plant to take a long time before I see any growth as well. This is my first time propagation the ZZ plant. Another friend of mine mentioned they had a one stem cutting of a raven ZZ and it hasn't done anything in a year. And then you have plants like the pothos that root and sometimes get new growth points in a matter of weeks. Haha

Just got a raven cutting and want to do it right.

Hey Eric....I don't see why it wouldn't work and I would definitely give it a try myself.....but.... I will probably never propagate a ZZ plant again. The time it takes to root and get new growth is astounding lol I know it's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but they do take a long time. If you do try it then please keep me posted with your results and maybe, just maybe I'll try it again. I wonder what type of time frame growers like costa farms has with ZZ plant growth...
@EricDM882 жыл бұрын
Well I have an update quicker than I though, I was given one full zz raven stem that I then cut into 3 pieces. The base of the stem has produced a small rhizome and 1” long roots! Maybe 4 individual roots. The middle section of stem has about half inch roots, and the top cut of the stem that’s pretty thin has just barely started to produce roots. They’ve actually only been in perlite for 6 weeks or so. I’ll probably leave them there over the winter and just plant them when things start to grow again. God knows how long it will be until there’s new growth though.

What happened with the single rhizome that was planted? The one where the leaf died and only the rhizome was planted? Did it send out a shoot? I have a ZZ that got root rot so I took the viable stems and propagated them in water but now I realized that's it's super leggy due to not enough sunlight and wish I would've cut them down further but it's already rooted so I was thinking of just planting the rhizome of one where the leaves on the cutting are starting to turn yellow. My concern is that it will succumb to root rot again and then I will loose the whole cutting.

I parted them up in my large pot of ZZ plants and I think two very small stems sprouted up

Can I cut off the bed of the root rot and directly transplant to succulent soil?
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
Sorry...I'm not understanding. Which part do you want to cut off?
@Slammy916 Жыл бұрын
@@EverythingPlants Sorry, typo- can I cut off the end where the root rot is and put directly into new soil? The rhizome was mushy so I cleaned off the roots with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution, but one long stem was left not attached to the other rhizome bunch. Can I just cut off that end to grow in a separate container?

Once the leaves root and are replanted will they grow as tall as a zz plant?
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
It will take a very long time. Honestly its better off buying a full plant then propagating them. Now if you want to try for yourself then that's awesome, but it takes a long time lol

Everytime I try and propagate the stem goes black. Is my tap water to harsh?

Have you done the leaf method with hoyas? Do they ever grow into a plant? Just asking.
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
Hey Shirley. That's the interesting thing about certain plants...some grow from leaves and others only from stems. If you root a single leaf it may grow roots, but unfortunately it will not grow a new stem/plant. It will only remain as that single leaf.

I rescued my ZZ from a house being evicted and everything thrown out. a couple of the stems are wrinkled though and starting to droop. Can I propagate from these or would you say leaf-cutting be best? The leaves are starting to yellow but I think only because not getting as much light anymore
@EverythingPlants2 жыл бұрын
I would only propagate a healthy stem, but you can definitely try
@annarose1212 жыл бұрын
It seems healthy toward the top... Is it wrinkly because it's maybe old? It's bigger than the one you have on the video

Were the single leaf and little stem/leaf cuttings all started at the same time? If so, I find it interesting that the single leaves did more rooting vs the leaf/stem cuttings that made the rhizomes! How long did it take for the leaves to get that amount of roots?
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
I actually forgot to mention this in the video, but the leaves were actually started a couple weeks before the stem cuttings. It took a couple long months 🤣 I've been waiting for some decent results before showing the video.

Starting from leaves takes forever, stem cuttings produce growth so much faster.
