I could listen to this all day. That’s greasy cheeseburger tone. Love it.

Billy Gibbons for ever! But how about Dusty and Frank laying down that solid rhythm? Dusty sounds like he's playing bass, rythym guitar and a Hammond organ all at the same time. The fullest sounding trio I've ever heard. Long live ZZ Top!

Just tripped across this one. I can remember slow dancing with a young lady to this, at the CYO dances in ca 1971 in Texas City, TX. For the outrageous price of $2.50!

I saw the Boys 7 times in Colorado and once at Cheyenne Frontier Days, first time on 8/28/1975. They had Rattlesnakes, Vultures and a Real Buffalo. I wish I could see them 8 more Times. I sure Miss Dusty.

ZZ Top first few albums were recorded in Tyler Texas at Robin Hood Brians studio, which basically was (and still is) a hadite block addition on the rear of his mother's house. Robin's genius helped get the band on track as far as their signature sound, he was the engineer. He probably doesn't get enough credit for that. Google Robin Hood Brians studio Tyler, Texas. Our band did 4 albums there and several national hits and many commercials have come from there.

cool story those first albums are some of my all time favorite recordings. So raw and rock bluesy.

A bass guitar players prayer. God please don't let them figure out they really don't need me. Gibbons has been very generous to those other two for a long long time.

Absolutely wonderful, pure gold dust. thanks so much for sharing this with us all joe, the best doing the best. Nothing comes close to Gibbons when he's on fire like this. Absolute magic.

Actually one of my favorite ZZ Top songs. Saw Billy in '69 The Moving Sidewalks, playing psychedelic surf music.. and from that sound, to this one here, Billy Gibbons had this uncanny way of transforming. And now, Billy Gibbons and The BFG' cubano sound. Yes thank you for the genius of the first recording studio, and thank you for Paula Abdul for her choreography genius. But I do have to say that the last 4 times I saw these guys, I was more than disappointed.. I was literally angry! None of their good songs, a new album out and didn't play 1 song from it! Terrible terrible terrible terrible. AA Bottom.

Pulled this from Billy Gibbons website referring to the first album "They were recording the First Album when Walter rang Billy up, playing Peter Green’s original Fleetwood Mac over the phone. It was so totally right that they raced into the studio holding on to that bit of inspiration. That marked the major shift that solidified ZZ Top’s personal preference: Bluesrock in the abstract."

This is as good as it gets. Remember the story behind bluejean blues? Billy told it was made by Elmore James for Fleetwood Mac but they didn´t do it. Billy did.

SuperCrackerjacks, i heard blue jean blues was about frank beard's exgirlfriend showing up at one of their early shows, wearing his old jeans.

Elmore James died may 24, 1963. Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967. How do you account for that????

@benjammin420420 What picture of BG with a LP Cust are you referring to? If its the pic you're referring to is the one of him with the black LP Cust that accompanies this audio track that pic is from a few years before this concert was recorded. He was playing Pearly Gates on this song. He used the OOP setting on Squank of their first album. He was very influenced by Peter Greene and was well aware fo what the Brits were into, it was Jeff Beck who got them their first Marshalls.

@MRMITCHELLZ Uh................., no, it's not a Peter Greene song, read the text, Gibbons is paying homage to him through his tone (out of phase/flipped magnet) and licks.

@straightfingerwater I would disagree with you. To understand the "Peter Green homage" just listen to both of them and do some research. He is obviosuly and intentionally paying homage to PG. I also have a good friend who was Nugent's guitar tech for 17 years and did all the shows with him and ZZ Top on their 2003 tour. I was back stage at several shows and we discussed this. Gibbons readilly admitted who his influences are and how he regularly pays his homage dues to many of his heroes.

Is there a source that says this is Pearly Gates with out-of-phase pickups? BFG is pictured playing a 3 pickup Custom (which have the OOP middle pickup) It doesn't sound to me like typical 2 pickup out-of-phase...
