Had the opportunity to meet the man, having scored backstage passes for myself and my then very pregnant wife. The line backstage was huge, and she couldn't stand any longer, so she went to sit down on a table in the corner. I stuck it out and he came out to meet the fans, a bloody towel wrapped around his fingers. Some guy yelled out, "So, whaddya gonna do now, man?" referencing his bloody, lotion-slick fingers. Stevie Ray just smiled, "Well, now I just get out the slide!" He had to play extra hard that night because Jeff Beck, had the flu and had to leave early. They were swapping top billing, one night Stevie, the next night, Jeff, but you could see how sick Jeff was, and after a few songs Steve Ray came out to spell him. So I waited in line till it was my turn to meet the man, after at least 50 people, each receiving a genuine smile, firm handshake and a look straight in the eye. I stepped up and he shook my hand, good firm grip, looked me straight in the eye. I told him I first saw him in Mannheim, Germany in '85 at the Festhalle, which is where they held town meetings, and of course fests. We grabbed a piece of floor five feet from the stage, which was only about four feet higher than the audience, so I was about 15 feet away from him as he just tore the house down! Anyway, after he signed my backstage pass, I asked him if, after he was done with all the folks behind me in line, he might come over and sign my pregnant wife's leg, since that's where she pasted her backstage pass, and said he would. I went over to stand with her, and sure enough, he came over, sat on the edge of the table and signed her pass, and we had a nice chat. He said his next stop was home and back to his baby. I think he and Lenny were getting back together. I commented that he did a little Hendrix medley, Voodoo Chile, Little Wing, The Wind Cries Mary, ending up with Mary had a Little Lamb. "You liked that? Well, I'm glad. We weren't sure how it would go over. I'm glad you dug it." Then it was time to go, and he shook my hand one more time, squeezed my wife's shoulder, and said, "Take care, and good luck with that baby," and you could feel he really meant it. Such a class act!

As incredible as it was to see Stevie in his earlier days...raw, hungry, consumed.....after he cleaned up there was such a clarity and control to his music and playing. It didn't lose its edge at all or become more academic, etc, it was just better, tighter, clearer. Makes it that much more painful that we lost him so early. He was truly at his best here. If there's anyone in rock to take inspiration from, it's him. The last true guitar hero. The best there was.

Eric Clapton Rolling Stone Interview speaking on the night of SRV's helicopter crash. "The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped. I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. There was no one better than him on this planet. Really unbelievable"

I saw him early in a small venue called JBs theater and I also saw him at larger events and finally when I saw he cleaned up his act and got sober, I was thinking there's a little less fear of him dying on us, and less fear of the tragic alcohol or drug induced death, and now he's going to live a very long life, sort of like a BB King or Les Paul type of legend. I was so wrong, and very sad that I'd never get to buy a ticket and see him again. One of my favorites is Riviera Paradise.

I remember I was watching Stevie’s last concert that was aired on Austin City Limits. He was awesome. The very next morning I heard on the news over the radio about his death in a helicopter crash leaving Alpine Valley. I was shocked and looked at the radio and said in my mind, “ I just watched him in a live concert just a few hours ago and now he is dead.” I do believe that was not only the fact that he really gave that concert is very best but more his willingness to even help strangers get off drugs and alcohol. The man lived by what he preached. He was truly a great man.

I put this comment under "Without You"-- Nashville, but wanted you to also see reply personally because your comment touched me so much, so... here goes... Not to be preachy, but I believe God left him here long enough to get salvation, then took him home to paradise to be with him. We got to keep him a few more years clean, sober for him to be a witness, then time to go to his Heavenly Abode to be with Jesus. I know I'll see Stevie in the Heavenly choir. Hallelujah !!! I guess I ended up being " preachy " anyway. but I think Stevie would have liked it and said "Show some love". Adding to this, was a hospice patient ( medical care with less than 6 months to live), 18years ago. Back on it and won't be long before going to join SRV. Delivering my "witness" almost completed. I hope this helps someone to find the WAY !!! God Bless

We are so lucky that this was recorded so beautifully bc if the JL telethon. It showcases not only the amazing SRV and his ultra tight band Double Trouble but it was right after SRV got off the blow and in this moment ,he was in a state of gracee and he is so generous that he shared that with us to. When he told his personal story and shared His message about how distracting drugs can be we see a true hero. IIt ook guts to make the little spontaneous public service and gratitude message. We see so much of his personality they this whole concert, adjusting his amp, talking about this going out live to a huge audience and being so touched, not a too cool entitled rock star, just a good man, a real man When he spoke of personal lost and found he was humble, not preachy and so sincere especially when he said it's is our job to spread that love around... it gives me chicken skin even if I watched it a hundred times. Thanks for the reminder my brother. The crowd is digging him and radiating love to him and to this day that love remains unchanged or diminished in any way. Love is love and it didn't die when that crash of his helicopter took him away from us. We are still loving him . Brute force colliding with perscission that's his signature. Love and light to you Stevie you are our hero.

When I was jounger, I used to spend my lonely nights in blues bars. That's where I heard Stevie play for the first time on a tape between two sets of a random live band. It was an instant strike. He got me into LOVING the Stratocaster and wanting to play the guitar which I began to do a few weeks later on a shitty strat copy I bought to a schoolmate and that I had to hide from my parents who just hated electric guitars not to mention their players. And today, 35yrs later, he is still my absolute guitar hero. He learnt me about everything about guitars and how to play the blues the way I really like it... What a beast! I consider him like a soulbrother. Never felt such a loss than the day he left us. I cried like I lost my own brother. I loved him, his sound, his feely musicality...everything about his playing resonated in me. And still does. There are a few people I really hope to meet one day up there. My longgone beloved grandfather and Stevie are definitely two of them. I could never thank him enough for all he brought into my life.

Wow! What a great performance by these guys! ALL OF THEM! Stevie, Tommy, Chris, and Reese. I am 57 years old and still play the crap out of my guitar. It's my morning coffee, It's my chill in the after noon, and when my lady can tolerate it, it puts my to bed. I've played all the greats from my time, not in order. Yygwie Malmsteen, Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, etc.. I ALWAYS come back to Stevie to clarify my solo abilities, less distortion and nothing to hide behind. For young blues guitar players just starting out, he played 12 gauge strings if I remember correctly and could bend the crap out of them which helped give him that huge sound. With that said, performance will always be a staple if you are learning the blues! Stevie's performances, however such a short career, is your starting point to discover all the great blues players that he discovered and was lucky to play with ALL his favorites!! He earned it! To show you what his talent level he was at, check out the ending of Jimi Hendrix's "Voo Doo Child". He breaks a string on his guitar at the end of the song, finishes the song by stepping on his favorite guitar to satisfy the audience and no-one's the wiser! THAT'S A TRUE MUSICIAN!! The music world is a lesser place without him, I know mine is!!

Stevie connected to his instrument in a more visceral and "true" way than any other player I've ever seen. He's not so much "playing" the guitar as he is pouring himself into it and out of the speakers. Absolutely incredible player, fantastic singer as well.
