All the best to the band and in particular the fine black trombonist. I saw him on March 18, 2018 playing with another band on Royal Street. He let me sit next to him and we spoke for awhile, then he stood up and my wife took and photo of us both. Then he took a solo!! Great guy.

Amazing not only to see *3* violins in a New Orleans band, but 2 of them playing with semi-Baroque bowing style (not the old-school German Baroque style with the hand under the bow, but the French version with the hand significantly beyond the frog, although using standard violin bows of modern construction, at least as far as I can tell at the distance of the camera).

Be sure and check out the original by the Mississippi Mud Steppers. It should be required learning for all mandolin-banjolin players.

@@MarkWYoung-ky4uc Okay, that is clearly the tune played by Tuba Skinny and by the 2017 superband, but it is purely instrumental, and I want the words that Jason Lawrence sings, which seem to depart from the text of That Lonesome Train Took My Baby Away (which I have discovered is the basic song), after the first few verses, to something more cheeerful, ending with "everything going my way" or similar.
@MarkWYoung-ky4uc4 жыл бұрын

No. The superbands are a collection of musicians and singers from all the various street bands around New Orleans that come together occasionally and perform as one large band usually to raise money for someone or some project. Compared to a lot of the superband videos, this group looks small. Check some of these superband videos out. They usually put on some good shows!

Different "superband," Türker Özer, different date. They are with the "superband" that did a fundraiser in the French Quarter in November 2015. See KZbin video of New Orleans Superband doing "Banjo Blues" (a great rendition of the Professor Longhair tune "Go to the Mardi Gras" is also part of this medley). They are also probably with other "superband" performances. Check them all out, it is great music, regardless of which date and which musicians are playing.
@richardwarren81386 жыл бұрын
No, X-75 Hurricane, it is not Tuba Skinny, but, I think he (Turker Ozer) is referring to other "superband" clips, in which Shaye and Greg of Tuba Skinny are performing. The "superband" moniker apparently is used to refer to a band that is put together with individuals who usually play in other bands.

Why do people label the trombonist "black"? Most of the great Jazz and Blues musicians were black, did anyone say about Louis Armstrong "Who's that black trumpet player?" So much racism in the world, these people are musicians regardless of colour.
@markhorton39945 жыл бұрын
So since most great jazz musicians are black (according to you) calling him black is a complement. Personally I am not watching, just listening and I hear a great trombone player.
@sucher223 жыл бұрын
I especially liked the colored trombone player. Also, I might note, that Barnabus is playing neither a trumpet nor a cornet, it is a B-flat flugelhorn, as anybody with half a brain can see.
@ianrutherford8782 жыл бұрын
@@sucher22 You don't need to be snooty about it.I'm a total beginner amateur who owns several horns and I just looked at that and wondered what exactly it was.There are experts in groups who know LOTS about brass and care LOTS about getting stuff right.Then there are the cautious ones like me who don't like to sound stupid or ignorant to smart arses.Then there are those with plenty of brain and heart who enjoy music and don't give a flying focaccia if they get shit wrong :)

Statement by an old jazzfan from Germany : Looking like a street artist, perhaps a clown, holdig a trumpet in his hand, this is one thing. Doing a good job on jazz-trumpet it's another thing. This poor trumpetter-gay should first go to study playing some more than onely three tones with his horn bevore going in concert !
@jorris584 жыл бұрын
Learn by doing. Plus, it's not his 1st instrument. I'm sure you're not a musician, else you wouldn't talk like this.
@fffhhh99824 жыл бұрын
@@jorris58 Thank you for answering ! But this nice trumpet-man unfortunately is onely an actor . Your question : I'd lerarned to play on trumpet when being a young boy in the 1950-tin jears and I love jazzmisic (incloding any other kind of good musik.). This is why I got a little bit angry with this poor tumpet-show named "superband". Thank you !
@stewartfenton76604 жыл бұрын
Fff Hhh. I'd like you to consider how hurtful unjustified criticism can be. I'm not a musician but rely on the opinions of people who are. You are the first person I have heard claim that Barnabus Jones can't play, albeit his normal instrument is trombone. Even if your claim were true, based on one performance, it would be good to renember this was a benefit performance. Seems to me that there was an abundance of trombone players but no one on cornet or trumpet. So Barnabus said, no problem, I'll bring Shaye's cornet for a change. That's how it looks to me. He was doing it out of the goodness of his heart, plus a chance to do what he loves play. Apparently you didn't know who he was, or that he's a world class trombone player, nor he you seen him play on other numbers on the same gig. Maybe you've learned these things since then, or maybe as a good musician yourself the whole thing wasn't up to your exacting standard, if so you obviously ARE an EXTREMELY good musician. Nevertheless I think a public apology is in order.
