While not being as strongly biased as many other depictions of the Rhodesian War, you too conveniently forget to mention the atrocious and criminal nature of many of the operational tactics employed by the Rhodesian regime. You will find many inquiries by independent organisations such as Amnesty International and United Nations bodies made at the time, that are testament to the brutal and criminal conduct of the Rhodesian military. Including raids targeting refugee camps in neighbouring countries, systematic use of torture against political detainees and extrajudicial summary executions of enemy POWs. There is also evidence for the use of biowarfare against the rural population. It's seriously troubling how such a regime is being openly glorified.

I was in the SFQC with a guy who had been in the RLI. When we were out one time getting a pay jump in, a instructor asked who has the most jumps here? When he replied back, administrative or Combat? admin was some crazy amount and combat was another insane number. I thought that the instructor was going to have a stroke.

It is a good video. Nothing "new" for me, since I have to know them for my country and our "only" possible enemy, but the principle is pretty much the same everywhere. Some history videos miss explaining these which can make it harder for people viewing to grasp the situation, especially with maps and tactical icons. For example in a video about Winter War (I think this was in the WW2 channel) they use eastory's excellent maps. Though the missing explanations mean that not many might realize when they are talking about a critical moment in the war (in this case when Mannerheim line was being broken) that the defending Finnish units in shown sector were basically battalions facing Soviet divisions and Finnish companies facing Soviet regiments. That just gives even more perspective. On a side note more detailed events of course are not often shown in that kind of large scale overviews, but since I mentioned that event I might as well mention that there were situations where that "company" tactical icon is where the company administratively is responsible for the frontline. But there can be situations where there was one comapany that, when they retreated, was 11 men strong with PFC as "acting commander".

This is an issue I also encountered when I made my more recent videos. Units in combat are so often understrength, reinforced or merged into a composite force that it becomes impossible to accurately label them. For my latest video I decided to replace the NATO symbology that I used before and instead describe the force structure in the narration while using a simplified icon to illustrate their movement on the map. Attempting to fit an ad hoc, multi-national, combined-arms task force into a standardized unit symbol would not only be inaccurate but also indecipherable as a small icon on a large map.

I was never in any military but I think that's also the tactic used by Turkish forces in 2019-2020 Pençe Kartal 2 operations in Northern Iraq and 2012 Hakkari operations in Eastern Anatolia. They also had 16:1 ratio. But managed to push insurgents out and made the region a lot safer.

12:03 - The Wars of Imperial Conquest...waged in the late 19th Century, long before "hearts and mind" and the "population approach existed." Untrue. It has been known since the Bronze Age. Alexander the Great, Cyrus the Great - knew all about it. (And everybody studies them.) I would issue a minor correction - and say that "Hearts and Minds" approaches were _unpopular_ in this era. As "dehumanization" had to occur in order to brutalize the population to support the empire, in the first place. One can't just take an extremely racist population, and tell their troopers to "win the affection of the subhumans that don't deserve fair treatment." So it wasn't even an option. Even if tried "we're no longer going to treat you worse than animals, we promise!" would ring hollow on most ears. The establishment - failed to realize, they had no options. They needed to just pull out. I'm sure Sun Tzu has much to say about not fighting wars you can't hope to win.

The first part, about politics, I think is an oversimplification of the problem of maintaining popular support amid an insurgency. If the insurgents are successful in capturing territory, the government looks weak. In defending against a counterattack, the insurgents can now take shelter in civilian areas with human shields. And their propaganda arm will inevitably blame civilian casualties, many of them victims of the insurgents' own campaign of terror, on the military's response. Additionally, civilians will be forced to make statements critical of the military and the government, and to work for the insurgents. And surrounding communities will be threatened with reprisals if they cooperate with either, expanding the reach of the insurgency even if the territory they actively control is limited. If that sounds like an insurgency reaches a tipping point where there's no clear path to get things back under control, I'd say that's a fair assessment. Playing the game of hearts and minds, though, has been attempted many times throughout history, and has failed every single time. If the insurgents have access to the population, by definition they have far more access to their hearts and minds than the civilian or military leadership. And vastly more control and influence over them.

America is like Rhodesia except it worked. What did america do differently? America did not enslave the natives. Everywhere that the colonizers enslaved the natives, the natives eventually drove out the settlers. Where the natives were wiped like the seed of Amalek, the settlers remain. Not a nice lesson but a clear and present one.

You assume Rhodesia 'enslaved' the 'natives'. Bold assumption to make of someone that, I suspect, also thinks South Africa had a population before it was settled by Europeans. You may wish to look into how this nation operated before you open your mouth on the matter again.

Since it seems to be coming up a lot in the comments. People talking about how the white minorities fears came to pass and Zimbabwe is now a hell hole and other people blaming Africas problems solely on colonialism... My two cents... Africa is still f'd for one reason and one reason only. Its not colonialism. Its because when colonialism arrived a vast majority of black Africans were still at the tribal societal level. At the tribal societal level war is even more common and deadly than the modern era and murder is the number one cause of death. Above disease. And considering such people dont have modern medicine thats saying a lot. Fact is colonialism didnt last long enough and it didnt have enough control to remove tribal and clan allegiance and therefore animosity. Take for example New Guinea which has experienced crazy levels of tribe on tribe and clan on clan violence because thats what tribal societies do. Its just now very recently adopting the type of civilization as a result of its exposure to the west where when someone kills your family member you call the cops instead of calling for vendetta and cyclical tit for tat violence. Its not a black and white issue. Liberia was reasonably prosperous for 150 years. Run by blacks but the black descendants of America and Canadian and Caribbean blacks, many of them ex slaves and their children, who tried to run things based on American democracy and governance. They got ousted by Africans as well around the same time as the white Rhodesians and have experienced the worst of what Africans have to offer since. "Western" society, whether run by blacks or whites is simply more advanced because it had long ago moved past the tribal stage. Like Mesopotamia long ago. Its literally thousands of years if development that Africans were behind on. Colonialism actually jump started their societal advancement. But obviously not enough. Even places like Ethiopia, with its own millennial long history, (and Im dating the beginnings of "Western" development to North AFRICAN city states) were overtaken by pan African ideology as influenced by Marxist rhetoric and Haile Selassie himself was also deposed around the same time as the Librarians and the Rhodesians and things also went to hell. Black and white leaders alike with Western ways of thought were overthrown by tribal Africans supported and duped by Marxist regimes. And things went equally downhill.

Saw an interesting documentary from about ten years back. It was about how there are still white people living in suburbs in Zimbabwe. No electricity a lot of the time. Just living on their savings and trading favors. They barbecued a lot. In nice houses. Cars. Nice clothes. Just sort of hanging out.

Its so refreshing to see someone start at doctrine and then zoom in all the way down to the chaos of actual engagements. Truly impressive how you tied all of this together. What really struck me was how design, engineering, planning, training and pure industrial might resulted in a machine and it's crew being able to fight and survive on the battlefield. The designers and thinkers had to build and organize units for some hypothetical future conflict while the solders had to operate based on decisions made in the past. Which in my mind is an impossible task yet it was the only way and had to be done in the most serious context of total war. I don't envy anyone involved and cannot imagine the bravery it must have taken to fight in those vehicles. Thank to SO much for all the hard work you put into this project. So many gaps in my understanding were filled in the last 4 hours and I am truly grateful people like you put in the effort to make amazing video content like this.

i slightly dissagree with your analysis of the political front, while you do explain the two case approaches to victory well enough, realistically its not a binary political - materiel conflict. They are innately connected, and there are other ways to break political will than to compromise. You can also break it with increasing the cost of opposing the state or make victory seem unachievable: Political action is multiplied by perceived prospect, make that prospect seem unrealistic and political action wilts. There is also terror, which ties in to both materiel and political, but also acts on a psychological level. If they deem rebellion as dangerous to themselves and their family, especially when even beyond just prosperity and life; like torture. Collective and gruesome punishment can be like a large gust of wind on a fire, where it drives the fire of rebellion into a temporary desperate retaliation, yet can cool the fire after the initial outburst if it doesent acomplish much. Machiavelli for example advocated for using terror and domination initially, to crush opposition during the start of a new rule, then pivot to reform later to keep these 'embers' cool after the fire has initially been stomped out. Political will fuels and empowers an insurgency, it doesn't make them invincible. The fire will run out of fuel and can even be quenched with a large enough hit.
