44th Royal Tank Regiment war diaries seem not to be listed as a source - which does detail this action. The lead tank (as in the photograph) of Lt Benton had two crew killed, Cpl Stockard and Tpr Nichols, all other crew survived. More hits on the tank finally blew the turret off. The 2nd tank hit was immobilized and all crew bailed out ok. No other tanks lost and just the two KIA. As to Market Garden, still wonder what the outcome would have been if Nijmegen Bridge had been taken on the first day, while undefended, instead late in the evening after being reinforced by a 10 SS Panzer battlegroup? Brilliant as ever!

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately I could not find the 44th RTR War Diary when making this video, although I did come across some fragments of their regimental history that I used for the Nuenen and Koevering battles. I hope to return to the 44th in more detail in an upcoming video to evaluate their use of the Sherman (Firefly) vs. the German Panthers and Jagdpanthers similar to my recent video on the Challenger.

The narrow front plan was considered as Eisenhowers broad front had made supply logistics in France a nightmare and US forces had resorted to raiding supply convoys and trains that deprived other units , namely British and Commonwealth , operating further North . US troops were very fond of looting even from their own allies . Gavin failed to take Nijmegen Bridge on day 1 , despite firm orders and the undisputed priority of the plan , having decided to shell an empty forest where he believed an SS division was hiding . This delay allowed 10 Panzer to drive South from Arnhem and enter Nijmegen Town on the S Bank of the river . By the time a force under Warren was organised to take the bridge late in the evening , it was too late .The ad hoc German invalid unit that attacked Gavins position days later was hardly a force to be reckoned with and was quickly defeated by the second wave of paratroops that landed in the same fields to the East of the position of established HQ . 30 Corps had made up lost time due to the loss of the Zon bridge but was now faced with a battle in Nimegen . General Gavin of the 82nd had screwed up badly .

Spot on post. Though Eisenhower was an excellent man manager and politician, he was a poor ground strategist. His broad front strategy was a complete failure all through autumn 1944 and got next to nowhere. Ironically, this narrow thrust in Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period.

Montys star shone again when the American lines spread so thinly in the Ardennes and enjoying Christmas were completely routed and in disarray on the commencement of the German advance to Antwerp . Monty given total command of Allied Forces Europe to tidy the mess organised the Paras , The Highland and Welsh Regiments to halt the advance in order that 30 Corps could provide a stop line at Namur and time for US forces to respond . British Regiments particularly the Welsh , suffered heavy losses in this action but did not receive the recognition they deserved as the agreement between Roosevelt and Churchill in order to boost flagging American morale was that this " was a wholly American action " in reference to this counter . Please visit the British cemeteries between Marche En Famme and Hotton if visiting Europe. They saved many American lives . Credit also to the British command of the US Rangers at D Day under Colonel Trevor of Combined Operations and his Lt .of the Royal Navy Reserves and British Commandos that accompanied the US forces . Sad to say that the Tom Hanks character never existed and , once again brave British soldiers are lost in the " Fog of Entertainment " and the US ability to fund a good yarn .

Marsh *Monty's orders were to withdraw​ farther west on the 24th to form a defense line and "tidy up the front" without taking any action* Our 2nd Armored Division CO, *Major General Ernest Harmon disregarded that order​ and moved to block the advance near the village of Ciney.* The Recon scouts sent word that the Germans had stopped near Celles, apparently to allocate the fuel now in short supply." "At 1435 hours Harmon told VII Corps, "We've got the whole damned 2nd Panzer Division in a sack! You've got to give me immediate authority to attack!" *Despite Collins disobeying Monty's orders, he gave Harmon the OK.* "At 1625 hours Harmon told VII Corps, "The bastards are in the bag!" On this day the German 2nd Panzer Division trapped and unable to maneuver was destroyed. The enemy lost 81 tanks, 7 assault guns, 405 vehicles of all types, plus 74 big guns. An actual account of the enemy killed and captured was not recorded. It ceased as a fighting force. The German 9th Panzer Division desperately attempted to rescue the 2nd Panzer, but was beaten back with severe losses." *Ardennes 1944:The Battle of the Bulge, p366 While undoubtedly an American Triumph,the Ardennes campaign produced a political defeat for the British.* And as Churchill recognized there was a much greater consequence. I'm still working on it. All the battlefield footage has already been recorded last year, but the scope of the series has grown massively since then. Every episode now requires about a month of additional research and script writing before I can even start to edit it all together. For part 3 this will probably mean a release in July, but I can't promise anything yet.

Excellent. Nicely done. Yes the Ambrose book gets it totally wrong. He claims it was the 19th, that the British unit was the Hussars, that 4 British tanks were lost, and that they were Cromwells. As we know it was B Squadron 44th Royal Tank Regiment, lead by Lt Benton, and they lost 2 Shermans. The days fighting was ultimately a success for the allies. Panzer Brigade 107 had to withdraw from Nuenen and German pressure against Son was ended. The British perspective is in A History of the 44th Royal Tank Regiment 1939-1945, Part III Northwest Europe 1944-1945, pages 160/161, by Major General G.C. Hopkinson. "" Contact was established with the 101st, orders for the next day were received and from that moment on the battle for the road (i.e Hell's Highway) began. Little or nothing was known of the enemy but there were definitely tanks east of the road and south of the canal at Zon. The plan therefore for the 20th was to ensure that this area was cleaned up and that the road and bridge over the canal remained open. At first light, C Squadron moved forward up the main road and soon contacted the enemy, consisting of infantry and self propelled guns on the east of the road. Meanwhile, B Squadron, with 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, had moved out of Eindhoven, directed on Nunen. A squadron of 15/19th Hussars was to come down from the north and link up with C Squadron whilst the Royals filled in the gaps with armoured car patrols. By 10.00 hours the engagement was pretty general all along the front. C Squadron were having a brisk armour piercing battle just east of the road but had driven the enemy infantry away and put paid to a couple of self-propelled guns. 15/19th Hussars were also heavily engaged at Nederwetten. B Squadron on the right were in Opwetten and had smartened up a couple of MK IV tanks and were moving on towards Nunen. It was obvious from the amount of flak going up that the enemy was in pretty good strength. Nevertheless a continuous stream of traffic was once more going up the road and our objective had been achieved. C Squadron was therefore ordered to proceed to St Oedenrode and come under command of 501 Parachute Infantry Regiment. B Squadron had meantime bumped into trouble in their approach to Nunen. Lieut. Benton's troop losing a couple of tanks. As it was by now obvious that Nunen was held in strength, A Squadron were called forward and a double flank attack was planned. Traffic jams caused some delay but by 1700 hours the attack went in with A Squadron on the left and B Squadron on the right. Two more Mk IV tanks and some half tracks were accounted for then failing light intervened and the attack was called off but not before it was firmly established that the enemy were withdrawing. The Regiment therefore went into leaguer at Eindhoven. Identifications proved that the enemy formation was 107 Panzer Brigade" It does seem that Stummels were mistaken for Panzer IVs. 👍

23:01 How many shells hit that half-track? Amazing that "a handful of men jumped out!" 23:17 Even after multiple hits, "the tanks stayed behind to finish off the half-track." Is that half-track made of Beskar?! 23:46 Oh, it was two (2) half-tracks?

There were likely two half-tracks, but Webster only saw one. Some of the 'hits' may have been near misses or glancing blows. There is quite a bit of 'empty space' in a half-track that armour-piercing shells can pass through without hitting crew. The tankers probably wanted to make sure they were properly destroyed so kept shooting until flames erupted.

Yes, the division did have some recon/liaison aircraft. One of them was shot down on the 24th over Koevering while scouting the German roadblock there. It's unclear what role they played on the 19th.
