Not tame at all. +40 mph deceleration, 60-40 negative G’s and rudimentary by today’s standards safety equipment. That second to last full speed replay always gets me. That one from atop the tower shows how the car seems to speed up when it gets caught by Kenny and how quickly the car decelerates when it hits the wall. Very violent and as a Dale fan 25 years on I wish he was still here.

It still makes me angry that he didn’t survive what is a very tame crash when compared to others he’s had and escaped without a scratch. 23 years later and it still breaks my heart. We went to the Richmond race the September after his passing. It’s eerie to think back on it because it was literally 3 days before the trade center attacks. Donald Rumsfeld was the honorary starter/flagger. They did a wonderful tribute to Sr before the race and the 3 finger salute on lap 3. I think I cried the entire race lol

0:50 this wreck is this race's equivalent to the Tony Stewart wreck at Daytona in 2001 (looks more violent to the naked eye than the wreck that kills a guy, but the drivers survive even with minor injuries), compared to the seemingly "routine" looking wrecks that Dale Sr and in this case JN had

I was ten years old when this happened. I remember my dad always watching NASCAR and Indy 500 when we were kids and Richard Petty was my dad's favorite, so of course, he was my favorite growing up. I remember my dad being upset after this happened and I remember him explaining to me how he thought it happened. My dad was a lifelong auto mechanic and he showed me the portable air tank in our garage and explained about adding too much pressure and what could happen. He explained about possible rust thinning the walls, etc. I still remember that discussion all these years later.

Back when NASCAR thought it was a brilliant idea to schedule a Winston Cup race in Talladega and a Craftsman Truck Series race in Sonoma on the same day. We know so much better now when it comes to making a NASCAR schedule.
