All these years later I still remember the moment it happened.

I remember watching this live in person with my dad in the living room. I legit thought we lost Newman this night. No question if this was a Gen 4 car Newman doesn’t walk away from this. Thank God for the safety innovations and advancements we have made

The thing that fucked me up about this is that it wasn't that bad of a wreck. All things considered. This wasn't that flipping upside down sliding and getting in this insane crazy. This is something that happens a lot. Get clipped and turned into the wall. I would venture to say Dale had 30 accidents just like it. Crazy. This accident broke my Dad. I was a kid watching it with him, and that was the first time I saw him really cry.

I never.understood how he died. It looked like a routine crash. In fact, he kind of hit the wall on an angle. It wasn't straight on. It must have been the impact from the speed of the hit. Just tragic.
@JJA19875 күн бұрын
Lots of factors in that crash caused Dale's death - The Angle, The Force of it, His Lap Left Belt breaking, His Helmet was twisted when the 36 turned him right leaving his left back portion of his head exposed which is what caused his Skull Fracture from being thrown forward and back

In those days, pit crew guys weren't wearing helmets, just like F1 Marshall's didn't wear fire suits. Effing ridiculous stuff.

Ahhh back when cars that crashed actually LOOKED like they crashed. Now these new tanks have absolutely minimal damage. I’ve seen Kyle Larson pancake the wall coming off a corner and still win, seen him flat out crash and still win lol back in 2017 if you flatten then wall you were done for the day

Hey, someone help me out here. Is there any fluid leaking onto the track? Not to make light of John's death, but these announcers were awful in this situation. Then, once all the trucks were stopped... Signaling a red flag situation, an announcer says "we're still under caution." Horrible announcing.
