The stunning New Zealand landscapes you capture showcase your commitment to going beyond the typical roadside view, and venturing further to reveal the extraordinary moments that make each scene special. Keep at it mate !

Thanks Stephen, its been a bit challenging over the last few years to get out there and chase the illusive light, part of the appeal for me is to try and find a beautiful scene that no one else has already shot, fortunately there are so many gems out there often not far from the beaten path. Hard to get your work out to the masses when you don't post often enough, content exposure is so ruled by social media algorithms.

@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I used to shoot daytime scenes a lot using HDR methods, these days much less, with big files you need big memory cards and the processing can be extremely slow depending on which method is used.
@macronencer3 жыл бұрын
This one was different and interesting! I think I prefer the HDR sequence. HDR is a tricky beast at the best of times and I haven't had much experience with it, but I have tried a few sequences using raw images and post-processing them. Takes quite a long time and the results can be variable unless you get it exactly right. I think your camera did a pretty good job here, but I suspect post-processing will give you a much better chance of getting it exactly right. The mist was a nice element in the shot. Quite an atmospheric location you were at!
@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! A lot of my early landscape timelapse work was HDR batch processed in post and the way I was doing took forever to process, so it's nice to have the in camera option which does a reasonable job, however you do need to allow at least 6 seconds interval time and I like to shoot shorter intervals especially when clouds are moving fast etc. In some ways these bush scenes may be better shot just as video footage especially when there are fast changing light conditions.

Cheers Stephen - yes hard to get it right in there regarding water levels etc. I think I'm just going to go back to bracketing 3 frames and not using the in camera HDR processing and blending in post as I like to have shorter intervals.

Hi Bevan, nice work, looks realistic, I see that you run into the border of the dynamic range you can pull out of your sensor. This type of scene is due to the form of the landscape not suitable to use a neutral grey grad filter. I tried myself with a Nikon D750 and a Z7 when set to max HDR effect in processing you get details into the sky. but it starts kind of being too unrealistic / artificial. Imho these are very difficult scenes to translate. Nice forest, the vegetation is from the Mezosoic when the dino's ruled.
@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages3 жыл бұрын
Yes the podocarp forest stretches back to the time when New Zealand was part of the super continent of Gondwana. I that scene there is a huge range of exposure between the sky and the low light understory. The in camera processed HDR images did not really pull much detail out of the sky but I may not have set the neutral exposure right meaning that all 3 exposures were probably over exposed. Even though the camera has this HDR mode I will probably just bracket 3 exposures and post process into HDR as I like to to keep my intervals very short and the processing time takes around 2 to 3 seconds in camera meaning I really need minimum 5 to 6 seconds interval.

That's some lovely light you had there! And that silhouette shot of you putting your tripod away came out really well too. People and birds... yes, they can be annoying. I remember I did a frosty morning motion shoot on my Stage 1 system at a deserted ruined church. It was beautiful until right near the end after sunrise when some people came to have a look at the place. Luckily they were in only two or three shots, and I was able to carefully photoshop them out of the scene. Thanks for continuing to share your beautiful neighbourhood with us - what an idyllic place to live! Hope you recover quickly from your surgery.

I have had the red battery show up during the cold night shoots. I then began powering up TL + all night long. At 3:38 I see you power the TL + all night also. I know personally how aggravating it is. After such let down I will run my TL+ at home in the yard and test for a couple nights in a row. In cold weather shoots I have put a hand warmer rubber banded to the DP NMX motion controller about the time I begin my walk to the site. Then it's easier to set up on site and keep the warmer on it through the night, have cut down faults. Also I wonder in colder weather the USB doesn't fit as tightly as it would in warmer weather.

Hi Bevan, the Nikon's Z-serie have great build in ramping solutions. The Z6 / Z6 II are the most ideal time lapsing camera's you can even use your Canonlenses since flange distance (lens to sensor) is the shortest compared to the others.
@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that's good to know, a friend of mine also uses the Z series body and has said that it has the capability to auto ramp in a way where shutter speed is ramped first, then aperture, then iso into the dark and then in reverse out of the dark. I can auto ramp on my R5 but can't really influence the order of parameters. Also I like to be able to ramp the interval and I'm not aware of any cameras that have this ability yet. But Sony and Nikon seemed to have it over Canon here so far.
@br2v3 жыл бұрын
@@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages in the Z6 serie you have the option to prioritise intervals or without priority. The Z6 / Z7 / Z5 are iso invariant and for the Z6 iso 640 at the max in the auto iso setting this is the ideal value since it has 2 steps sensor gain [100-400 ISO] and above ISO 640) At ISO 640 SNR and dynamic range are awesome. In the timelapse and interval submenu you have two choices. One is interval priority and the other changes the intervals depending the lowest light level. If you go from night to day in P-modus and Auto Iso at a certain point let say you start with 4 seconds intervals but you'll end up with 30,5s / 31 second intervals if you use 30 seconds as a max speed, You can set the max aperature and max iso setting and max shutterspeed duration. The same applies to the Z6/7 II but they are even more suited since they can use any powerbank. Otherwhise you're done after 4 hours (at -2C) .

Liking these vid's, cheers. Thought the timelapse + thingy was a bit pricy and another thing to carry. The qdslrdashboard app did a great job doing the same, but I suffered connectivity issues. That was with my 6d. I ran magic lantern for intervals so the time-lapse kept going if i lost connection. Yet to try this app with my Sony's.

Thanks Darren - I have also used qdslrdashboard and never had a trouble free run. Did also consider loading up magic lantern to get a bit more video resolution out of my older Canons when they only shot 1080p but not for time lapse. Thanks ! What a beautiful area. Bevan, When do you decide the rail not going to be used. Need to look up that lens heater your using. Would like to have one that can be dialed in.
@BevanPercivalPrimalEarthImages3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ken! When shooting a high number of frames like these all nighters at around 3200 frames the longitudinal movement across a 5ft rail is almost imperceptible unless there are objects really close to the lens, also when combined with a 360 degree pan it's hard to see the difference between pan + slide and pan alone. I have done a few 360 pans with the head running along the full length of the rail twice - which since it's double the length its provide a bit more of the slide movement effect. The bonus of pan alone is that it's a bit easier to ensure no cable snagging. For the shorter duration shots like just sunset, sunrise etc slide is much more pronounced but always needs some close by reference objects to really show off the effect.
