Sadly, the RX5 in my current dwelling has no power supply. Right when I was becoming inclined to search for one, I ended up purchasing another Yamaha instrument, the DTX Multi 12 percussion pad, which includes the sampled sounds from this line of drum machines among its uploaded tones. I’ve included those sounds both in my solo recordings under my real name, plus one or two on the channel I’m commenting from. This is one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4aYhWSfmLqnjdEsi=GI9PKJGOqtsaDKI2

The Roland D-70 was originally called the U-50. The waveforms are compatible with the U-20, but the D-70 adds filters, waveform manipulation and layering. Apart from the 15KHz frequency range, a D-70 can sound quite good. But D-70s tend to break down a lot. Especially with the keys. When the D-70 first came out I wasn't impressed. The JV-80 came out about a year later and sound lots more impressive.

I still use my RX7, it’s heavily used in Adeva’s Warning especially the toms at the start. They definitely need some effects though as they are recorded very dry with no ambience which is actually good to have them raw You can get a really good punchy 909 style kick drum if you use the pitch bend effect quickly going down on the lo conga pitched down an octave to begin with. I never understood why the RX5 was so much more money but had less sounds and individual outputs.

I have the sy77/tg77 and I have them for their own sounds and capabilities. I would like the DX7 ll FD but more for nostalgic reasons than superior sound. The SY77/TG77 are 16 voices at 16 midi parts multi timbrel as well as having sampled sounds for layering ala D50. The really nice thing is also you can layer the FM sounds by 4 layers per patch and do cross switching and so on! So much synth power.. I can hardly contain myself lol! Now, I also have the Korg Opsix and Yamaha DX200 and both do sounds I could not duplicate on a classic DX7 but could on FM7/FM8 soft synth. Indeed those 2 units are like hardware versions of FM8 but I know I know.. The Korg IS a software synth in a box.. What.. everrr! LOL! The SY77 on the other hand?? Wowsa!

I believe the SY 77/99 is underrated as synths. Look away from the AWM side of them and they’re FM monsters.

Hi - I've owned a few of these, and have demos of some of them on my channel (under the Keyboard Demos playlist): Wavestation - just great. Demo on my channel. Roland D70 (came out after the D50 btw) - great performance synth, great for live work. It had some great piano and organ sounds, much better than the U220. Demo on my channel. JD-08 is the boutique reissue of the JD-800, which I owned for many years (I now have the JD-08 which, imho, is a passable copy of the original). Demo of the JD-800 on my channel. AN1X - difficult to program, but sounds great. Deepmind 12 - based, apparently, on the Juno 106. Very different sounds. Owned it but let it go. Roland System 8 - owned but let go cos I have the Jupiter XM and a load of soft synths that do the same thing. Demo on my channel. Minifreak - is just great. Plan to dem it sometime. Great video, a trip down memory lane for me!

Very nice vid, maybe a more detailed version on the RX5's sound mangling functions? I have the RX5, RX7, RX21 and had an RX8 and sold it on. The RX5 is IMHO the best drum machine of the mid 80's for sound manipulation - it's more like a synthesizer approach than a drum machine. The RX7 is really good for all the extra sounds, but is much the same, losing the mixer and multi-outputs, but still very good. The RX8 is nothing like any of the other RX's, in look and sounds, very dull and uninspiring TBH, has reverb and chorus effects...but so what! It's OK but just not a patch on the 5 or 7. One of Your drum button pads seems to be double triggering, probably the spring under the membrane is a bit weak and triggering the adjacent sound, easyish fix.
@synthfellowАй бұрын
Thank you and yeah I realised one pad was double triggering. Never done that before. I need to dive into the RX5 a little more but there will be a video with more in depth talking about sound editing. Somewhere in the future 😛

So many thoughts here… one of those snares I’ve always called the ”head drum snare”, because of Roxette’s ”The Look” (Head Drum Mix) which features it. I’m trying to remember a demo of one of the early RX machines in a store, my memory is saying even the very first models responded to velocity data over MIDI, but I’m not sure. Do you know if any of the RX machines lack velocity in? And finally, the most important question: is there a swing setting on the RX5?
@synthfellowАй бұрын
There is a swing setting on the RX5, yes and check on that question but if RX11 got velocity over midi I really can't say. My guess is yes but again... I don't know. My take from the RX11 is that it was used on Wonderland by Erasure. I've listened to that album A LOT so it's nice to know the drums where a RX11.. :)
@tommitoivonen362424 күн бұрын
According to RX11 user manual, there's no velocity sensitivity. Or it was well hidden and I just couldn't find it. Anyway the machine is released so close to birth of midi that Yamaha may have not thought of the need of velocity.
@PeranMe24 күн бұрын
@ Yeah we all know how Yamaha screwed up the velocity implementation on the DX7, so you may very well be right… Thanks for taking the time to check and report back, much appreciated!

It is a little know fact, that there was actual SAMPLER program for 48K spectrum, which could sample short fragments of audio thru tape in, and you can then play them. I don't remember it's name, but it was Polish made and had a hifi stereo at it's loading screen.
@synthfellowАй бұрын

@@synthfellow Yeah, I used it in early 90s. It can capture in awful quality, but still usable sounds, the total time for 48k spectrum was 8 seconds or something like that, and you can had up to 8 samples.
