Lithium is a badly understood technology. You do not need to charge at crazy high voltages you can get the same result with more safety and with much increased battery longevity by charging at much lower voltages, plus it reduces the risk of thermal runaway and BMS shutdown which can be catastrophic for alternators and onboard chargers. We need to learn that Lithium does NOT need 3.65V per cell when you can achieve the same result @ around 3.4V per cell. 3.4 x 4 = 13.6V which would probably be accepted by most 12V appliances because alternators tend to pump out 13.8 - 14.2V? Obviously IMO :D

Thank you, John. I watched this with interest, as we are in the process of buying a new camper trailer. It does come with the seemingly universal brand of 3-way 95 L, but we were going to swap it over for a cleaner/more efficient 12 V compressor fridge. Then we realised that we'd need more battery storage and solar power, as we mostly camp off-grid and stay in the same spot for extended periods, which would challenge 12v/240 electric fridges. I've read all the pro-s of the 12V, and the cons of the 3-way, but I've also read what you've confirmed; that the 12V compressor fridges make a compressor noise whenever they need to boost to cool, whereas the 3-ways make a slight sound only at the time the fridge is turned on. The 12v sounds so desirable, and we'd researched and chosen or brand, too, but I am very sensitive to noise, so even a quiet rattle or hiss or buzz will drive me unfriendly... 😳. It's true.. so I fear that we are bound to stick with the 3-way despite my better judgement.. Noise and I don't mix..

I would like someone to do a video on what they think are the best vans to buy for Van conversion engine sizes and what parts usually go wrong on them vans and the cost of what them parts will cost to get repaired to give more people an idea of what Vans to go for
@Simonboss2483 күн бұрын
My opinion on this would be. buy what makes you happy as it’s you living in it for those who have loads of money they might opt for a motorhome because some people have more money then sense but then some people might opt for a van conversion because you can get all the stuff that you want in there for a lot less of the money and then that money you can put into travelling and enjoying life And me personally I would go for the Van conversion to spend less money and enjoy life because that’s what life‘s about enjoying it so do what makes youhappy.

Similar setup to ours, way more comfortable and practical both on and off road. Bonus side effect we found is that with the larger wheel and tyres plus raised suspension we can go through much deeper water without worrying it will come in through the floor of the van.

Hi John, excellent content. The question is though, where did you get them? I've looked online and it is really difficult to source the B6 Camper units. The ones that I seen online are mega expensive. You know what Christmas is like. My van has put on pounds and it's going to be hard to get them off. So I think these shocks would be the answer. Cheers.

Campsite hook ups should be connected via a TT System I.e earth stake in the ground therefore if you are off grid and using an inverter surely the inverter and associated sockets etc powering 230v appliances. Surely you would need to bury an earth stake in the ground connected to the inverters earthing terminal.

Nice one John. I've always thought that the front and rear suspension on our 2012 ducato maxi was suboptimal, and fitting the spring assisted rubber inserts to the front did improve matters, the van steers better, but still dips down. The rear single leaf springs, which according to the fiat info are heavy duty from the factory, were flat and were always sitting on the bump stops, due in part to the over-use of heavy plywood construction in the interior build. I've replaced the original rear bump stops with air assisted bags running at just 2.2 bars and thats improved the ride significantly, but I do wonder just how long it will be before they will begin to leak. Your change to uprated front legs has confirmed my thoughts, though I didn't realise that specific campervan front legs were a standard thing other than after market air suspension legs, given that the maxi is rated at heavy duty as standard. As always, your investigations have given me the additional info I need to make up my mind about this, but as our van is not used to anywhere near the extent yours is, I have to consider the cost/benifit, but in time, as an upgrade/replacement becomes necessary, I'll know where to look. Thanks very much indeed. Will you be upgrading Mandy's van now?

John - your spare wheel...is the OEM one, and if so will it still fit (safe for driving I mean) if you need to change a wheel?
@GadgetJohn6 күн бұрын
Yes it’s the standard factory wheel & tyre, if I need to use it then I’ll just make sure it only goes on the rear axle. So if it’s a rear puncture that’s easy but if it’s a front puncture I’ll need to swap some wheels around before I drive it.
@andrewmillerphotography6 күн бұрын
@@GadgetJohn Really appreciate that - I was umming and aaring about getting an alloy spare etc - but I'll keep with the factory spare wheel.

Jesus thats a nightmare. Hopefully no longterm damage done. I think IF I were building a Van I would make everything removable. A leak is a nightmare, you are bound to have damage to timber components John. Well done on finding the issue mate.
@DP-vf6lk8 күн бұрын
When building my van I had the same thing. Many of the joints between the outer skin and the frame are bonded. The van had been bumped and put through the body shop. Consequently many of the bonded joints were damaged and the outer skin was not attached. I went round the whole van, sides and the roof and Sikoflex'd all the joints. The van is solid now. When your roof or sides are loose, you can hear it rattling! Make this check before you do anything on your build!! It's a hassle if you don't.

You know it won't completely dry out until the summer as your not likely to dismantle all that are work. That's just the way it goes. I've sealed up the arch box screw holes in my van, sealed and painted all the arches. As a general rule I will not drive in the rain unless I absolutely have to, that's my personal privilege. The side bumper trim I've used coaxial cable I found on one of my dumpster dives and CT1'ed (sikaflex equivalent, not much in the price) it to fill the gap between the trim and the body panels. Personal note - please don't put your van in the oven, I'm pretty sure that's a recipe for disaster.

It's currently 25 degrees here in spain, over 30 degrees in my van and the humidity here in the desert is 10%. Let me assure you it's dried out, That's just the way it goes!

Fill any gaps with expanding foam then coat it with sikaflex, all vans should have rotary vents on the roof, damp and mould hate ventilation.
