Thanks for the video John, I live in Ireland and bought the Gen 3 about 2 months ago. Priority for me was Conference calls for work while traveling in my camper van and also being able to remove it from my van for use in a house or airbnb when I wanted to park up the van for a day or more. I was very concerned and skeptical that I would be able to work and take video calls on the road as I sometimes have back to back calls all day. Anyway I am blown away by how good Starlink is. I have zero connection issues during work calls. It’s as good or sometimes better than my home broadband and the monthly subscription is cheaper than home broadband. It’s takes less than 15 minutes for it to start up and connect and I’m away. I simply pop the dish on the roof through my van through my skylight for the day. It’s amazing and I would thoroughly recommend Starlink. In Ireland I paid €249 for the dish and it’s €59 per month for Roaming which is less than the 1GB Fibre Broadband from Eir (Ireland’s BT) I pay for my home broadband (€71 per month) my dish has no audible buzz - just an FYI.

It still amazes me how a little square dish can transmit to a satellite in outer space and still achieve fast internet speeds! If it was slightly cheaper per month, say £50, I’d buy and sign up in a flash! It’s a shame they don’t have the dish that automatically turns and tilts.

Interesting review. Thanks. We're in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA right now. Using a Gen2 dish my speed is 298/19 and about 35 watts. But I am using my own modem and a 12 volt POE setup. We're really excited that Starlink just allowed in-motion use, so we might upgrade to a Gen3 which will be easier to mount our our truck.

Excellent video. Great summary of the important features. Hopefully they can work on reducing that power consumption even further or even introduce a selectable low power mode. Impressed by the ping as well, I had assumed that would be much worse.

Hi John, thanks for the video. I'm still happy with my Gen2 in Remote France. Didn't even know there is a Gen3, but have been sent info about the Starlink Mini, now that just looks like a Gen2 in the guy's backpack in the advertising, just as big? I only pay 40€ a month. France is trying to block a StarLink upgrade, and everyone with Starlink in France has been asked to write to the French government, to change this. France hates anything not 'made in France' . Yes I had a 'hum' on my Gen2. When it arrived it was connected to the 'snow/ice melt' system, I disabled this and the 'hum' stopped. I use the original Starlink router, which did not have a power box 'thingy'. I'll probably stick with Gen2 for now. I 'love look forward to your tests.

Hi John, thanks for sharing another interesting review. Be interested to see what the power consumption is like on 12v once it's stabilised. I dont have the room for a Gen3 to flat mount ATM, but could move my rear solar pannels back to make some if my Gen 2 fails. The gen 2 is around the 50 - 60w range on 12 v so just curious on the difference for the GEN 3. Take care cheers Rich and Cooper

Interesting video, I “treat” myself to a Mini on the Roam 50GB package, and am getting similar Upload speeds but your download seem much more - The latency is great, was really impressed with that. Like your router setup - keeps it simple for connection eh. All the best, David 👍

Hi John, a great video as usual but unfortunately the price is just too far out of my comfort zone at present. I am now torn between the Netgear Nighthawk M3 or the Teltonika RUTX50. Can you tell me if either can can run from a cigarette lighter socket in the campervan? Many thanks

I bought the Gen3 package as appears in the video and in general satisfied with the quality and overall performance, however... Once you plug in the cables (ethernet/power) to the router and dish, I find it almost impossible to disconnect without damaging the cables. Therefore, not possible to modify the initial installation. Well done Elon!

Hi John we’ve just bought a gen3 and find it very power hungry and was wondering how much it actually uses on 12v as we live on a narrowboat or is it something we will just have to turn off when we don’t use it tia

Hi John, In spain they are iffering a small dish and they call it itinerant with a dataconnection of 59€/month for home country, then 40€/month for additional 50GB of roaming data or thats how i read it. So my question is why do you not use that version?

So if you pause starlink because you don't need it, then find you're in a place where you do need it, can you reactivate it where you are or you need an internet connection to reactivate it? Like when you first set up.

Sorry for the follow up question, but does your router (when your not using starlinks own router/ap) just make a dhcp request to the dish to bring up its ip connection ?
@GadgetJohn
@GadgetJohn 3 ай бұрын
Yes, the router looks for a wan dhcp server to obtain an IP and then once Starlink is online the public ip data set is used.

How is the jitter on starling? Do the ping times vary much as the satellites move over head, and it jump from one cube sat to the next m
@GadgetJohn
@GadgetJohn 3 ай бұрын
Ping times are fairly constant at 30 to 40 ms, the dish connects to a constellation of satellites so never loses connection.
@RetroBytesUK
@RetroBytesUK 3 ай бұрын
@@GadgetJohn That's fairly good, wont cause much in the way of issues for VoIP and teams etc. Given the distance the signal must travel up/down they must have a fairly efficient path across the cube sats to where ever their ground link is in the UK.

John, Have been following your StarLink vids avidly (as well as all of the others) as we have very poor broadband at home which is tested to the limits with 6 of us in the house using it. with no plans for fibre to be fitted in our estate, I have been looking at other options. One question i have is does the new antenna need to be pointing a particular direct or is it unidirectional? I ask as I believe south is the best direction here in the UK but we have a lot of trees to the soouth of our property that might well obscure the LOS of the antenna.
@GadgetJohn
@GadgetJohn 3 ай бұрын
The new dish has a wider field of view to obtain satellite connectivity. As you see in this video if you align it using the app you can get extremely high speeds over 300 mbps, however, I then show it fitted on my van roof, without being aligned in any way, and as long as the dish is pointing up to the sky you’ll get over 200mbps.

I''m paying $90 per month on cable, for a 1.2Gb connection rate. Until Starlink comes up to the same speed, it would offer me no advantage to switch, except the satisfaction to dump my cable internet connection. I'm actually averaging only 700Mbs of that 1.2Gb's, which angers me.
