Stop saying Nazi. Germans. It was not a Nazi coat. It was a German army coat. Germans.

Someone more knowledgable about the subject could probably talk at length about it, but I think it's very telling that most of the American war films are about these epic soldiers who yes, do struggle but eventually have a glorious victory and get to go home and live, or snipers who in actuality went through and committed horrible deeds, but are now celebrated, how those who go to war are heroes. While the rest of the worlds war films are about the suffering- about the families torn apart, about the traumas of survival, about the fact that even the so called 'winners' still loose in the aftermath of the war.

Actually fucking insane that this was made by the BBC of all people. The same ones who knew the whole time and actively hid it by going as far as firing whistle blowers.

It is important to remember that “Grave of the Fireflies” is an animated film version of the novel of the same name. Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) is a short story by Japanese novelist ”Akiyuki Nosaka”, based on Nosaka's own true war experience. The original novel was published in the October issue of “All Yomimono” magazine in 1967, and was awarded Japan's 58th ”Naoki Prize” the following spring. Although the novel “Grave of the Fireflies” is not a complete documentary, the subject of bereavement of a younger sister during wartime was created with autobiographical elements that strongly reflect the author Akiyuki Nosaka's actual experiences as a boy and his feelings at that time. He lost his house and his family to severe burns in the indiscriminate air raid on Kobe by the U.S. Air Force on June 5, 1945. The novel is based on Nosaka's memories of his boyhood, including digging food out of the burnt ruins and carrying it by himself to the evacuation site of Nishinomiya City, and his memories of nature and the beautiful fireflies he experienced there. This animation is better viewed as an adaptation of an original work than as a creative work by Ghibli. The evaluation should also include the novel on which it is based. It is common in all wars that those who suffer the most in any war are not those who made the decision to wage war, but the civilians involved and the children who lost their parents. The subject of this story is based on the author's actual experience, which is perhaps what the author wants to convey. Japan is home to many novelists and works of fiction, and it was Japan that produced “The Tale of Genji,” said to be the world's first full-length love story some 1,200 years ago. Animated works are easy to see beyond the language barrier because of their visuals. However, the amount of written stories created in Japan is vastly greater than the number and history of animated works. It should not be forgotten that it is this historical backbone that has given birth to many animated works as derivatives and additions, as a variant of narrative creation. Animation is not the mainstay of Japanese creative works.

They're naive about to die sadly but if you die with someone you love well to me it gives meaning to their lives. They couldn't control circumstances but still died together. Idk to me it somehow means more in death. You were loved. Isn't that enough?

I just watched this for the first time last night and well, I can only imagine what audiences thought coming out of this 102 years ago. Honestly it's more disturbing than anything I've seen pre 1960 and I'd say 1970 if I hadn't seen Jigoku lol

9:14 Actually, there are some book adaptations that kept the drunk/pink elephants scene, but they're few and far between (and I did managed to screenshot two of the books that has that scene from what I can access at the Internet Archive)

I was born and rised up in Poland in 00s Almost every family in Poland lost someone during the German and Soviet occupation my family hid their Jewish neighbors in the basement during the war in Poland, the only country in Europe occupied by the Nazis, the death penalty was imposed on the entire family that hid Jews In 1938, 32 million people lived in Poland in 1946 only 23 milion. So manny good and talented pepole's was kill by russians and germans only because they was Polish or Jewish and millions of those who fled from communists and Nazis to America. Next time someone who is a Pole born outside of Poland, in many cases it is those who did not return to Poland Except that unlike the Jews, after the war we did not have our own country and this pain grew with each generation until the fall of the Berlin Wall and then it turned into the question of my peers Why do Germans have more money and are wealthier than us? the answer is that they could live in peace and we under another occupation.

The plot of the movie kinda falls apart once you realize they could've just, killed the oracular pig, traded the magic sword for the destruction of the cauldron instead of the cauldron itself, or just got the neighboring kingdoms to form up an alliance and march on the horned king's castle. It's literally just one psycho lich waging war on everyone, so everyone might as well just go fight him.

It's terrifying because it shows the world we're used to completely vanishing and replaced by a post-apocalyptic hellish world. The 'last harvest' sequence I found utterly depressing as in the nuclear winter radiation sick people struggle to harvest a few bushels of grain with the very last fuel to run the combine. Society basically turns into the serf/feudal system of warlords offering protection and food in exchange for work. If you can't work, you're useless and left to die like Ruth without anyone shedding a tear because they're so numbed to death.

Idk about other the services but every Marine I served with, went by the nickname they got in USMC Boot Camp. Not everyone recieves one, only the ones that stand out to the DIs. I was Recuit Comedian, I also had to tell a joke every night and if the Drill Instructor on duty doesnt laugh, I'll have to pay for it in the morning.
