As a life long tattooed and musically influenced JD fan, who had this on VHS tape in 1987 I have some reflections in 2024. Firstly, this was a band barely keeping it together on stage. But, there is the charm. Curtis mixes up the words, which in my youth I thought was so deep and profound. But, today I see as amateur. The band constantly is looking to Morris to keep it together. So many flaws! Yet in the end what we see is a raw youthful passion, that I today as a GenX loser musician wished so hard to emulate. I wish my art could have, but what is here is truly and deeply unique.

I remember listening to this a few times when I tried to commit. It’s so calming but in a feverish way, I cannot explain it. It feels like a song that makes you realize you can choose to go out, a death march if you will. I am going to listen to this the next time I try on august 30, I’ll make sure to succeed this time.

Bernard in his HJ outfit never the world's greatest guitarist but those shard chords suit the songs, Hooky holding it together with that unique bass, looking out for the next bit of aggro, Steve the machine grinding away on limitless drumming and our Ian doing his thing. Legendary, absolutely bloody mythical. There are two types of people in this world. Those for whom Joy Division are their religion and the uninitiated who'd rather listen to Taylor Swift. P'Orridge bless him described their performances as "metabolic" and a nod to Sir Peel. Fookin hallelujah

No band that has come before or after JOY Division has touched the pit of my soul or sent shivers down my spine the way this band has. 45 yrs later and they are still doing it. For me the greatest band that has ever existed.

I never got to see them live at the time as I was only 11-13 when they were around. But I’ve since been lucky enough to see them several times since, including this gig by traversing the astral planes in lucid dreams. They truly are fantastic live and you really get the feeling you are seeing something very special, it’s palpable.

Here is a quote from the article, "How to remember Ian Curtis" by Paul Fisher, "...since his [Ian's] death a mythology has grown up around him and the circumstances around his suicide. It's seen as somehow poetic, the doomed romantic grasping at the hemlock like Chatterton. But Ian Curtis should not be viewed as a tragic role model... the anniversary of the death of Ian Curtis serves as a reminder that he was not unique, he was no superman. He was an ordinary man suffering from mental illness and he killed himself for a reason that people not suffering would be able to cope with... Ian Curtis needed help and didn't get it. In the thirty six [now 44] years since his death, things have improved but not as much as they should. There is still a stigma attached to mental illness, which leads people to shun help. We all need to fight this. And it can begin in your own workplace... The mythologising of Joy Division and Ian Curtis by the likes of Tony Wilson and Paul Morley for example - both good people in lots of other ways - has not been helpful. Ian Curtis death was the result of mental illness, and little to do with art or being misunderstood."

Ian Curtis is alive and eternal , Hello Ian Curtis and co and all other cosmic eternal peoples, the recent midsummers eve/day Stonehenge free festival gathering 2024, was a cosmicly amazing successful event , I was there and pleased to see all the free natural eternal peoples of the infinite wild natural eternal cosmos enjoying themselves, there WILL DEFINATELY soon be the return of the Stonehenge free festivals FOR ETERNITY , REGULARLY, and ALL other free festivals also FOR ETERNITY , the IMPORTANT thing is, the more the natural wilderness returns back to the northern side/edge of Stonehenge (where the small "barrow hills" and traditional pyramid stage/ main festival site area is), i.e. the tarmac, roads, fences, artificial things e.t.c. being taken up, and the natural mud, turf and other plants growing back,, the sooner the better, and the Stonehenge free festivals Will DEFINATELY return even MORE sooner it is PRIMARILY NECESSARY for the northern plains tundra/fields ( i.e. where the main free festival, pyramid stage , small" barrow hills" usually is) to become completely natural wilderness again , there will still be a route to the south of Stonehenge for traffic travelling east to west/ west to east, and yet that route will eventually have the tarmac removed e.t.c. also , and then just become a flat dry smooth natural mud route that vehicles can STILL use 100% safely o.k. at the same speeds as before, (that southern only (east to west/west to east) road re-naturalisation (eventually back to a vehicle safe flat dry mud road) is in the more distant future, but to the sides and northern edges all around Stonehenge ,re-naturalisation back to completely natural tundra is VERY DEFINATELY IMMINENT and IMPORTANTLY it is better NOT to actually scorch/burn the actual turf/grass soils e.t,c. in any way , we are elf minimalist-tech eco-friendly(primarily) peoples, Stonehenge is here for ETERNITY , and so are we ALL, and so is all our eco friendly cosmic eternal music equipment e.t.c. any planes, helicopters, U.F.O. , other craft e.t.c. e.t.c. in the sky and space is ONLY Soviet Union Russian, so rest assured EVERYTHING is o.k. and 100% ECOFRIENDLY, see you soon and a DEFINIATE eco friendly free festival ETERNITY ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED

It's okay. Theoretically, over time, the more you find the truth and the more intelligent you are, the smaller you get, the weaker you become, and the more you sink into a motionless pit of Hell. The entire world will be chasing you down. Then once you lose your place in the vast order, you'll grow big and tall and chase society and women. Hahahaha. Once you hit something permanent, you'll never grow old. You'll be young always and return reborn into the same body. It's a nightmare either way.

Tony Wilson was a visionary for picking up on all the young raw talent that was erupting out of Manchester and other cities at this time. He was a really from an older generation but picked up on this fresh new sound and saw the potential in them. He had his flaws but he was a believer.

I have this on videotape and watched this about 20 years ago... before the KZbin and the Internet were what they are today... I've just rewatched it... thought I'd just watch one song and I've ended up watching pretty much all of it! They were a force of nature, so very, very good. The best. Anyway fellow obsessives, I remember I spotted this when I first watched it but had no-one to ask. It looks like barney is playing the bass during Sound of Music. It looks like he is sat down playing the rickenbacker What does anyone else think? I always think the musicianship sometimes gets overlooked. But if that's hooky playing the guitar lines for sound of music that's pretty impressive! There are harmonics at the start during sound of music, which aren't easy, especially live and The staccato, thrashing, chopping rhythm sounds exactly like what Bernard does. I've looked at the sat down figure and I'm sure that's Bernard playing the bass lines. The sat down figure gives the bass to a tech at the end of sound of music and he's dressed with a short sleeved white shirt and tie like barney is for the following song Colony. For Colony Bernard is back playing the sg guitar and the bearded hooky is back on the rickenbacker. I spotted this 20 odd years ago and had no-one I could ask! I wondered if the bass line for sound of music was tricky for hooky or if they were just messing about! I can't imagine hooky being phased by any of the basslines…unless it's because he's singing the backing vocals at the same time. While Ian sings ‘love, life, makes you feel higher’, hooky sings higher, higher, higher progressively faster like it is on the record… That's another thing you don't necessarily appreciate, how good hooky's backing vocals are…which they are. I've tried playing bass and singing before and it's very difficult especially when the bass lines are precise, impossible for me. Really difficult. Anyway I could never find any reference to it before and I've read pretty much all you can on joy division. So just wondered if there are any fellow obsessives who know the answer.

Sound of music is at 21:40. In a GQ article from 2020 'How Joy Division made Closer', Stephen Morris describes Bernard and Hooky swapping instruments for the recording of Atrocity Exhibition which is a more demanding song I think, so hooky obviously has the skills. This information wasn't available 20 years ago. I've never heard reference to and didn't realise they would swap whilst playing live.
