Ron you rock as far as hide handling instructions! But I have one burning question for you; How do you clean very old brain tanned molcasins , units that have years of dirt on them ?
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 9 күн бұрын
I have never tried to clean mine. Braintan that has been done well can be washed. I usually recommend to use Ivory soap and cool water. Ivory is gentle and made with animal fats so it is not going to harm the braintan. Hope this helps.

So what the difference between this and hair on as far as quality and finish wise?
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 28 күн бұрын
If you braintan fur/hair on when you do the final smoking you only smoke the flesh side. Whether you do hair on or hair off depends on what you are going to do with the finished hide.

The rifle shot at the deer by your girlfriend was similar to yours seen in the S2EP2. All rifles should be adjusted before each hunt with the ammunition you plan to use. On track for the right setting Justin. 🎯

Ron you are the best teacher i have had the pleasure to watch. I braintan buckskin for many years and back in the day a lot was trial and error. I think I got pretty good at it, but you showed me some important details that I never heard before. Love your frame setup! 😮 So thank you for sharing this!

You said after you smoke the hide you wash it before you make your project? What do use to wash it with, what soap, warm or cold water? And do you have to stretch it again after washing?

Hi from Alaska! I'm Alaska Native and I'm tanning our Sitka black tail hides..small deers..lol. When you do the second brain dip, are you using the first solution brain and water, or you blending a new batch of brain and water? When you let the first brain ring out dry, about how long, till the blue hide part goes away? And last question, can you sand the dry raw hide in the neck and back area to thin it down a bit, on the flesh side? Thank you for being so thorough. I'll be making an iconic jacket lined with sea otter.

I was waiting to see how he tightened the strings when the hide was almost dry and it was edited out.
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 Жыл бұрын
The strings are each about 12 ft long and I just start on one side and take the slack out. Just keep going around until all the strings are fairly tight again. There is very little moisture left in the hide when I tighten the strings.

Are there benefits to letting th brain dry and stretching it as you mentioned? If I only had one hide and time to do it that way.
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 Жыл бұрын
Drying the first braining into the hide and doing the pre-stretch is a real plus for insuring a nice soft hide after the second braining and wringing.

Are there benefits in the final product to shaving the hair while dry versus soaking it til it slips?
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 Жыл бұрын
There is no advantage to soaking a hide until the hair slips. It is much easier to scrape a fresh hide than a sloppy wet hide. Shaving the hair just makes it easier to get started. Once you have a good start you don't really need to shave anymore hair but I do anyway, habit of doing it that way.

Hey there Wondering if it’s the same procedure with the hair on . Or what differences there would be .. I’m currently working on one and have concerns if I’m to do more or if I’m doing to much pushing ..can you stretch it to much in turn making it too thin that there is no fiber to work..? Would love to send you a picture or vid of my progress and maybe you would know what’s going wrong or right with it ..

Thanks for the great video. How tightly do you see the hide? It looks like it pulled apart pretty easy but I feel like if it’s too loose you might not keep the smoke in, right?
