Ron you are the best teacher i have had the pleasure to watch. I braintan buckskin for many years and back in the day a lot was trial and error. I think I got pretty good at it, but you showed me some important details that I never heard before. Love your frame setup! 😮 So thank you for sharing this!

What a great tutorial! I’m inspired and I have two skins to tan. So, I have a good idea now what to do. It’s be a shame to burn them. Thank you. Everything you made is beautiful.

Awesome series of videos. Very good teacher . I learned a lot from you and have tanned a couple deer and an elk so far. Have 3 more deer, 4 elk and a moose at the rawhide stage waiting their turn to be tanned.

These videos were very helpfull. Now I can properly tan hides. Finishing my third hide this week end and fixed four hides that I'd messed up with bark tanning and bad brain tanning.

You said after you smoke the hide you wash it before you make your project? What do use to wash it with, what soap, warm or cold water? And do you have to stretch it again after washing?

Thanks for the great video. How tightly do you see the hide? It looks like it pulled apart pretty easy but I feel like if it’s too loose you might not keep the smoke in, right?

You have very good videos!! I just did my first brain tanning on deer hides but they didn't turn out as good as yours. I wish I would have seen your videos first. I am going to make a coat for hunting and was wondering if you have any patterns or suggestions on how to make a pattern. I was planning on taking apart an old shirt or jacket to make a pattern. Thanks for your videos!!

Thank you for the kind comment. Your plan to take something apart to make a pattern is the best way to get a good pattern.

Ron....I wish i had seen this before I ruined the first and only brain tanned hide when I ran into the house to get a cookie....the flareup was sad to discover.

Yeah that's sad. So much work down the drain. I ruined a huge batch of venison jerky with a flare up. Bring the cookies and beer out first next time, lol. I had a couple panic moments. When the smoke stops , watch out ,flame on. I use an extra long skirt ( wetted) on mine. Slightly un-even smoke job, but I like that.

if you can afford a crappy old woodstove it is by far the safest and easiest way to smoke a hide in my experience. you can offset that flu to the point where the smoke is always cold even if it flares up

Thank you this is really helpful. Tanning my second hide after several years and forgot many things. Did you go run for your bow when that bull bugled and the edit cut?

I noticed some people oil the hides before smoking. Is the oiling not necessary?

My hides that are not really nice get used for work. I make aporns and smoks. Tool aporns, pads for working other things . Spark deflectors for welding. Skull caps to protect you hair . Sleves,

So what the difference between this and hair on as far as quality and finish wise?
@ronnail6488
@ronnail6488 2 ай бұрын
If you braintan fur/hair on when you do the final smoking you only smoke the flesh side. Whether you do hair on or hair off depends on what you are going to do with the finished hide.
