what about an even weave linen fabric? I've got a beautiful mountain range in the background and a lone tree in the foreground. The leaves of the tree are scattered over a wide area without any other color around them and it is a 32 count Jobelan color weigh antique white.....what would you recommend?

Hello Ford 😀 So, if the SAL it's a kit, I will prepare the fabric when it comes and normally I use everything from the kit as it is. The last mystery SAL by Caterpillar Cross Stitch that I participated in, was the "Winter wonderland" one. I used the flosses on the floss cards they came but I didn't enjoy it so much because they were all together and especially the colours away from the edges were a bit difficult to wrap and unwrap, so next time I'll put them on floss drops, (usually carton self made ones) 🧵 Now, if the SAL is not a kit, I order everything, prepare the fabric and the floss and wait impatiently for the first part of the pattern 😁 Thanks for the great and always useful videos! Looking forward to the next one 😍🧵🪡

Hi, what do you mean by piercing the thread? Do you mean do pierce the one thread or seperate the two threads?
@CaraParton3 күн бұрын
Hi, I stitch with 2 strands. I don't understand what you mean by piercing the thread. Do you mean to actually pierce one thread or to pierce between the two, thus seperating them? Please reply and confirm this for me!

You share a wealth of information. Thank you for sharing your tips they are very uselful. One idea was wrapping the floss from the kit card. I never thought of that. I have never had a kit that the thread was wrapped like the one you have just shown. The kits I have purchased in the past have them just hanging from a labeled card. I always work from this card, and my threads are crazy, but from now on, I will be wrapping/label each thread color. Thank you again.

I went ahead and tried your suggestion about the hoop. It’s like my mind is blown. I can believe I never thought to do this before. You are sooo right about the working the threads on the back of the project. It’s so much easier and it’s such a simple change. Thank you for this video.

There is something I can add about wooden embroidery hoops. My favorite one is almost fifty years old. It's perfectly round, and holds tension really really well, all the time. Which makes me set the bar really high for the higher-priced, wooden embroidery hoops you can buy nowadays. The sad part about those is that they're not really round. Which means that they don't always work well, because in a lot of positions, the inner hoop doesn't align tightly with the outer one. There is a simple way to avoid that: When you buy them, they're aligned correctly, so draw a perpendicular line over the rim of both hoops to mark the "correct" position, so you can get them to hold a good tension every time. I use a Sharpie for this, though nail polish would probably be a better idea. If you want to mark a hoop you've worked with before, just experiment until you find how they best work together. I hope this helps.

For me with the plastic hoops it’s not that I’m loading the fabric wrong. It’s that the metal at the top tends to pull through the brace at the top and tighter I have to make it the looser the hoop gets over time.

I am beginning a new project and have not crossed stitched in a VERY long time. I have figured out how to get to the middle of the fabric, but I’m trying to find out from the chart diagram where to start. I’m not sure if there is a symbol or something to indicate on the chart where the beginning is. Can you help me?
@CaterpillarCrossStitch4 күн бұрын
If it's a caterpillar design, there will be 2 red lines on your colour chart - and a small triangle on all 4 sides of the pattern. Both of these denote where the centre is. For other designers I would think there would at least be the triangles.
@michikoclark86025 күн бұрын
Hiya. I wrap my hoops with bias binding - it helps stop the fabric from slipping. Also, I put the screw on the opposite side of the hoop to my hand (not the top) - this helps stop the thread from getting tangled in the screw. Never seen your channel before - have now subscribed as I've just picked up a cross stitch I started 20 years ago!! Also, I love how your braces (suspenders?) are the same colour as your hair!!!!!

The other bonus of stitching in the well is that the surface is hidden from day to day dirt, like when storing or putting it down to change threads. The back can get as filthy as it wants lol

Do they use the same symbols for colours in all their kits?
@CaterpillarCrossStitch5 күн бұрын
No, the symbols are only relevant to the chart they are on.
@SonovaStitch5 күн бұрын
In my experience, most pattern charting software has certain default symbols that it uses for specific colors, so they will *frequently* be the same from specific designers, but a skilled designer will also hand-pick symbols for colors in a pattern to avoid confusion between similar symbols or to avoid visual dazzling (there are certain symbols that large blocks of them will just make my eyes go all buggy). If your question is related to marking the symbols on the bobbins, you can remove them with just a cotton swab and any kind of alcohol (from hand sanitizer to Mezcal). Thanks for watching!
