Hello. You recommend short slices for samples using Avidemux. After inspecting source video for video/audio formats, I slice and Save to .mkv. Unfortunately Handbrake 1.9.1 for Mac (M1 processor MacBook Air, macOS Sonoma) does not Open the file. Nor do other .mkv users (VLC etc)_ recognize or open them . Any instructions or manual available to check my encode options? I find none at the Avidemux download site.

Hi, could you guide me through the following, I got a few Blurays (not the actual disks, but ISO Files, around 45GB each) of a few movies and Tv shows. I’d like to extract the movies, and individual episodes from each ISO File, and convert them/ encode them to a much smaller nice mkv files, How do I rip the ISO files? How do I encode the ts files from the BMD folder..

Seems very hit or miss for me. Sometimes I will get lucky and the converted file will be like 20-25% the size of the original, but usually it is more like 75-80% of the original file size. It sucks because 4K videos take a looong time to encode, and there is no way of knowing whether I'll get lucky with 20% file size, or 80% file size 😕 I even have my settings at a very slightly lower quality setting (25 instead of 24) which theoretically would make the file even smaller.

Thank you for your video! 2 Questions. 1. Why choosing 10-bit encoding, if the source is just 8 bit? It's a waste of space. 2. Profile 5.1, while most Android TVs are capable of max. Profile 4.1? People should check, where to play their movies.

Hi ive been ripping my DVD collection using these settings but ive come across something that i noticed. I ripped a PAL DVD (Firehouse Dog 2007) using makeMKV. Mediainfo before encode says video is 720*576 Encoded using your settings above, selecting 576p PAL SD for the resolution limit. Ran the file through filebot and (per my format) adds the height to the filename.... 480p, hmmmm So i ran the encoded file through Mediainfo and there it was video dimensions now 720*552 Is this right? I dont understand why handbrake does this although i can see that if i have optimal size AND Allow Upscaling ticked handbrake will preserve the 576 height Im wondering whether this will have any negative effect down the road from a) the height not being perfectly 576 or b) filebot naming it as a 480p (telling me its an NTSC DVD when its not) Thanks

If you're on an Nvidia GPU you should select H.265 10-bit NVENC instead, that will speed up the encoding significantly. Should take less than an hour for a 2 hour movie if you're on a RTX 3080.

My file was 72 gigs. Looking like a 25 minute conversion if the estimates are correct. I let the Atmos 7.1 passthru since my soundbar does a decent job with that codec, but I compressed the AC3 bitrate on the DTS 5.1 secondary track. It's not a spatial track like Atmos or DDS:X, so I wouldn't lose much detail. If I had to guess, it should be around 6gigs with these changes. We shall see shortly.

Final product ended up being right around 7gbs, so 1/10th the size, retained all the passthru audio and I cannot distinguish the difference in video quality. Still full 4K with HDR10. On my next run I tried using the AMD hvc hardware encoding with the same settings, and it only took around an hour with the same results. I've heard using the GPU encoding adds some size to the files but I can't see much of a difference. Thanks for your video.

Another stellar video. But I was disappointed yesterday when I discovered that my expensive DVD/blu-ray drive can't read Ultra HD (4K) blu-rays. They all include an HD blu-ray disc, so it's not all bad. I have enough hard drive storage that I can just rip the video to raw MKV. Jellyfin on Roku can play those raw MKV's just fine. Making things a bit more disappointing is that my 4K TV can do HDR. I may need to buy a new optical drive...

I got my drive from a guy here in Australia whose website is uhdenableddrives.com - his service was outstanding and the drive is great. Depending on where you live he may be able to help you. If he doesn't ship to you it is still worth visiting the site, as you can purchase his firmware online, then its just a matter of buying a supported drive.

Hi, I don't think any software could do this with any degree of accuracy unless you set the encode to an output size limit. The software doesn't know what the video is (animation is more compressible than regular video, and scene complexity is a huge factor in output size) therefore if doesn't know the compressibility of each frame. You have to actually do it to find out.

Hi, it takes a ton of computer power to do it quickly, thats why I suggest leaving it on whilst you dont need your computer. You can adjust the speed slider but it is a sliding scale, the faster you encode the lower the quality. Play around with it until you find a setting you can live with.

I find it so annoying to watch a rip which doesnt have subtitled foreign dialogue e.g. Return of the Jedi Jabba speach. 2. Why dont you pass through the audio track? On your DVD video i learned to pass through AC3 which ive been doing religiously - for my DVDs 3. Why dont you pass through the metadata on the summary tab? 4. Does it matter what region my Bluray comes from? Should i build a separate profile for PAL and NTSC?

Hi, in glad you like the video. 1: its just a demonstration, if i was encoding a video for my own use that needed subtitles I would encode them. I have other videos on this channel that ahow how to do it if you need a hand. 2: There are great savings in file size to be had by compressing the audio. Its the same as compressing the video. The whole point of my turorials is smallest possible filesize without quality loss, and for my ears compressing a 1500k audio stream down to 448k is just as good. 3: again, its just a demonstration where I am trying to get the smallest possible file size. If you want to retain metadata by all means pass it through. 4: These setting will convert any video to progressive, so it doesnt matter what region your source is. Hope this helps 👍🏻
