Just a little tip. I've been backing up my DVDs which are 720 x 432. I noticed if I changed the resolution and allowed upscaling with a limit of 720. In conjunction with your settings. The results are wicked awesome. The resolution comes out to be 1280x720 and it looks much better on a 4K TV. It looks perfect on my phone and amazing on 720p & 1080p TVs. Thank you!!!

Yeah I love that movie. I spent 4 days with Mighty Mo in Bremerton WA a LONG time ago and I couldn't believe the size of her 16" guns. Can't imagine what it would have been like when Yamato and Musashi's 18" went off. Love those old Battleships!

Handbrake has worked perfectly for me before and it still does work however, when I've tried to burn DVDs it cuts out half way through and says it's finished encoding yet when I play the "finished" file back it's all glitchy?

Can I use the settings with the animation preset?
@thewebernets3 ай бұрын
Hi, I haven't done a lot of testing with animation. You could definitely try it and see how you go, but I expect these settings won't be optimal for animation as it is more compressible than video.

Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to lay this out for us novices! Regarding subtitles, I have selected the preferred subtitle track, deselected "Forced Only" and "Burned In" and even though MediaInfo says there IS an English subtitle track, the track is not selectable in either Quicktime or VLC. Thoughts?
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
Hi, Deselecting Forced and Burn In will make subtitles unavailable. Check out my article on how to include subtitles here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4uQq3uhYrl-nLM

1:40 why would i want it to crop the video? isn't it better to keep the original dimensions?
@marcus3d2 жыл бұрын
To get rid of letterboxing. There's literally no reason what so ever why the video should contain black bars.
@CDubya.828 ай бұрын
I might save space by compressing but realistically i didnt rip a disc with makemkv only to then compress and be no better than the 'streaming' platforms. Not to mention the time of reencode can be long and vary wildly depending on your PC.

Hi ive been ripping my DVD collection using these settings but ive come across something that i noticed. I ripped a PAL DVD (Firehouse Dog 2007) using makeMKV. Mediainfo before encode says video is 720*576 Encoded using your settings above, selecting 576p PAL SD for the resolution limit. Ran the file through filebot and (per my format) adds the height to the filename.... 480p, hmmmm So i ran the encoded file through Mediainfo and there it was video dimensions now 720*552 Is this right? I dont understand why handbrake does this although i can see that if i have optimal size AND Allow Upscaling ticked handbrake will preserve the 576 height Im wondering whether this will have any negative effect down the road from a) the height not being perfectly 576 or b) filebot naming it as a 480p (telling me its an NTSC DVD when its not) Thanks

why is MKV preferred over MP4? I am planning on using on plex. Just wondering, thank you for the information and video
@thewebernets2 жыл бұрын
Hi. There have been many arguments over the years as to which is the better format. Some people say MKV is sharper, others prefer it because it is open and MP4 is somewhat proprietary. I personally prefer MKV because when I have a large file to copy to my server I can start watching it while it is still copying across. Whereas I have to wait for the whole MP4 file to finish copying before it will open and play. Im interested to hear if others have found the same on their systems.

@@thewebernets on Handbrake I noticed option for mp4 that says web optimized , states for progressive download (allow immediate playback over network without needed to download entire file...maybe this allows mp4 to function same way. I have some files that have dts-hd 7.1 and I noticed pass-through was available on mkv but not mp4 for some reason only E-AC3 on mp4 is available for dts-hd. Also the subtitles seem to allow more option on mkv. But I wonder if mp4 gives better file sizes or faster transcoding? Thanks

if you were to change the audio track to FLAC, would the re-encoding process cause loss even though it's a lossless codec? or would it re-encode without losing anything?

To rip DVD to H.265, you can use DumboFab DVD Ripper. 1. You're not suggested to adjust frame rate, if not necessary. 2. Lower the resolution. Typical DVD videos are 720×480 (NTSC) and 720×540 (PAL). Adjust the resolution to 640×480 won't make any quality difference. 3. Lower the bitrate to a lower level. For example, adjusting the original 2500 to bitrates of around 1800-2000 is acceptable without noticeable pixellation.

Hi Geo-geyser. Im sorry to hear you are having trouble with Handbrake. Its a great piece of software, but like most software if it is not configured "just so" the results can spin out of control very quickly. If you would like to describe your process and results in detail in another comment perhaps myself or some of the other encoders here might be able to pinpoint what is causing the issue.
@kannoramirez22882 жыл бұрын
Your RF value is too low probably. RF 22 for 480p is good enough, for 1080p RF 24.
