Great video! I think it would be worth to add in a future revision that for people using Nvidia graphic cards, changing Video Encoder to H.265 10bit (NVEnc) can greatly reduce encoding times. In my case from over 5 hours (on 8core 16 thread Zen3 CPU) it went down to 28 minutes (RTX 4090). Tried same file on my secondary PC (i7 7700 and RTX 2080) and it took 54 minutes with NVEnc. Huge time and electricity saving on that one :)

Glad you like the video. I don't own a compatible graphics card, so I am reluctant to suggest things I am unable to fully test and understand. I have heard this can also affect the output file size, but again I have not been able to confirm. It would be an interesting experiment to use exactly the same settings with NVEnc being the only variation. Might have to invest in one...

Nvenc very fast but the file size is 2x or more compared to x265 at the same crf. x265 is very slow but you get the smallest file size. So in conclusion it depends what do you want, to encode your movies fast, and sometimes get some bad frames or do you want the smallest file size and leave you pc at night to encode your movies@@thewebernets

I can’t speak to the NVidia encoder cuz I have the AMD encoder. I tested Back To The Future 2 using these H.265 settings as well as the AMDenc using the same settings. H.265 was a 3 Hour encode while AMD Enc was a little under 40 minutes. The file sizes for both were under 10 GB but the AMD Enc has a larger file size by about 3-4 gbs. The quality seems to suffer on the AMD Enc too probably cuz it’s so fast. Seems like it’s a trade off. Speed vs Quality and Smaller Sized files.

@@HereAfterNow Handbrake filters like Denoise, Lapsharp, ... are only 8bit. That means, if you got a 10bit video (UHD HDR), then you must not use such filters. @thewebernets8 ай бұрын
Hmmm. If you want to know the file size after encoding you can right click on it and select properties, or Get Info if you are on a Mac, or use MediaInfo. Im assuming you mean the estimated file size BEFORE encoding. I don't think there is an accurate method, and even Premiere Pro's Media Encoder gets it wrong usually. Every frame has a different level of compressability. You will find an episode of the Family Guy will always compress considerably more than an episode of your favourite sitcom of the same duration. Handbrake doesn't know what kind of video it is compressing, so it can't really tell you with any accuracy what the final file size will be.

This is a great and useful video! Thank you for making it. I really appreciate the explanations of the advanced settings in the video description. I have the video saved in a playlist and I will come back to it when I get around to encoding 4k remux's. I'm currently just encoding 1080p blu ray remux's at the moment. The end file size you got for your 4k remux is better than most of my 1080p encodes lol. I have some questions regarding some settings choices if you have some free time and don't mind answering. 1. You left cropping to Automatic. I've been doing Conservative. I think there is a very minor difference between them but just wondered if there was a reason you didn't go Conservative. 2. You done h265 for video encoder. What's your thoughts on AV1? I know h265 is better supported currently but perhaps long term it'll get better and maybe space savings over h265? 3. You chose constant frame rate over variable. Could that not be an issue for a film like Avatar: The way of water, which I believe changes frame rate during scenes? 4. In the audio tab you set the sample rate to 48. I have been wondering what the sample rate means, but I can't actually find an answer to this in any forums.

Hi, Great questions: 1: Deinterlace is automatic with these settings, so if interlacing is not detected, no filtering is applied. Its a "one setting fits all" kind of solution. Feel free to turn it off if you want to perform the extra steps. 2: It all depends on your hardware. If your TV and player all support HDR go with that, it looks a lot better. 3: I chose H.265 10Bit, not AV1, but yes if your graphic card doesn't support them, features like NVENC or QuickSync won't be available for selection 4: The goal of these tutorials since I started writing them in 2014 was "Best quality at smallest file size". For my eyes and system RF 24 looks great and gives a smaller file size. If you are happier with the results at RF22 go with that. 5: Keep in mind these setting are for 4K - But yes, In my testing I have noticed 10 bit gives a much nicer encode, especially in dark scenes. Artefacts/noise and blocking seems greatly reduced using 10 bit 6: Can't explain that, maybe try the latest stable release instead of nighties 7: In short, it makes the videos look a great deal better by tweaking aspects of how the encoder works. If you want to know in detail what each argument does, have a look in the description of the video.

Hola, gran pregunta. Hi, I don't think any software could do this with any degree of accuracy unless you set the encode to an output size limit. The software doesn't know what the video is (animation is more compressible than regular video, and scene complexity is a huge factor in output size) therefore if doesn't know the compressibility of each frame. You have to actually do it to find out.

Hi, Im glad you like the video. Reducing 7.1 channels of audio at 1500kb down to 2 channels at 160Kb will be a substantial saving in file size. If you value file size over audio quality, this would definitely be worth pursuing. Regarding borders, these settings remove them completely, lock the aspect ratio and adjust the frame size, so when you play the encoded file the borders appear to still be there, but as there is no data, these pixels are off, giving the appearance of a black border.

Thx for the tutorial! A question though, doesn't the PRESET determine the output size of the video? Yours shows Fast1080p but you are encoding to 4K?
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
When you select a preset then start an encode, those predetermined parameters define how the video Is encoded, unless you change them. When you open Handbrake, there is always a preset selected. When I opened Handbrake, that 1080p preset was already selected, but I changed the parameters during the course of the video, I changed the size to 4k on the dimensions tab. so when I started encoding those new settings were what was encoded even though I began with a different preset. The second was 51GB Big with a bitrate of 65 Mbit/s. When they both were done, the first one had a bigger size and a higher bitrate. How can that be,I expected it to be the other way around.
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
This is due to choosing Constant Quality over a fixed bit rate, and the amount of details in each scene/frame of your movie. Scenes that don't have many details, and include lots of blank open areas such as skies are more compressible, and still remain high quality. Whereas scenes in a library with hundreds of books for example has a lot more detail, and can't be compressed as much.. Using constant quality ensures that the quality of each frame is constant regardless of its complexity, and it achieves this by varying the level of compression, this is how two different movies of exactly the same length end up with different file sizes. Cartoons and animation will generally always be more compressible than live action video.

I've used handbrake for years and discovered some weird things....Example. Take a 480p DVD tv series that's interlaced that I want to convert to x264 or x265....In the past I would OFTEN run into jerky frames most noticeable when there was a slow pan or movement...some people might not even notice it but I do...so I did so much experimenting...When I chose the default MKV 480p setting... I always changed the 30 FPS under video to "same as source"... I chose deinterlace default/Yadif/Bob and instead of using constant framerate, I used variable. Wouldn't you think variable would be worse? Yes... but in my testing, I get super smooth motion using variable but if I chose constant that slight jerky frame was there...I always bump the CRF from 20 to 18 too. I don't encode a lot of 1080p stuff though.
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
My guess would be that frames are combined to a certain extent when interlacing is active resulting in less frames per second, so if you are using "same as source" and Handbrake is trying to make 27 frames fit a 30FPS container, some frames might duplicate causing the appearance of stutters. Variable frame rate can adjust for it resulting in smooth motion.
@One-Day-After-Another Жыл бұрын
@@thewebernets Yea... I learned that same as source + variable causes handbrake to make an exact copy of the source FPS...If I run into a video from the past that has jerky frames that I encoded...if I encode it at 23.976 constant instead of 30 FPS, it completely smooths it... I use playon Home to record streaming stuff sometimes... and those recordings suffer the same thing....the jerky frames. Since the files are so large... I re-encode them to 23.976 constant and totally smooth.

There is a great page in Handbrakes documentation that offers tips, as well as arguments it supports - handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/technical/video-qsv.html

Hi! Which one is better for 1080 resolution, H265 or H264?
@thewebernets8 ай бұрын
Hi, in short, H.265 is a better code. It is more compressible. However, it takes a lot longer to encode and is harder on your system. Both codecs can provide excellent results so you need to look at your equipment to help you decide. If you have a more recent computer with lots of power, and a compatible media player and tv use H.265. If your computer is older or you want the encode faster, and have an older media player and TV use H.264. You will get extremely good results if you follow my videos on either codec. Hope this helps

Just curious, when you said set the Colourspace to BT.709 for devices that can't play HDR media. Will these still play in full HDR on devices that natively support HDR? Or do you only get HDR support by leaving colourspace off?
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
Great Question - By changing the colour space your are narrowing the range of available colours to suit what a system can handle. Playing the muted content on a system that can reproduce a broader spectrum won't bring it back, as you have already stripped that data from the file. It is similar to converting lossless audio to mp3, you are stripping out data to the fringe of what is perceivable, some people hear/see the clipping, some don't. Thanks for the question 👍

Hi, it takes a ton of computer power to do it quickly, thats why I suggest leaving it on whilst you dont need your computer. You can adjust the speed slider but it is a sliding scale, the faster you encode the lower the quality. Play around with it until you find a setting you can live with.

I noticed on one of my movies that your audio setting using AC3 lossy audio ended up being a higher file size than using FLAC 16-bit lossless (with all other settings the same). Handbrake can’t pass through PCM but you can use the source PCM with MKVtoolnix after using handbrake. That was about the same file size as using FLAC. Just curious what could be causing the lossy AC3 setting per this video to be higher file size than lossless? I went with lossless in this case for better audio.
@thewebernets Жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't have an answer sorry, Ive not tried to use this method.
@noahmarriott8188 Жыл бұрын
Flac is lossless compression. The file is compress like ac3 but it is unpacked when it is required to bitstream the packed pcm data. Flac has a different compression algorithm so it doesn’t scale the same way. I don’t know what settings you used but this may be the case.
@noahmarriott8188 Жыл бұрын
Also you can passthrough pcm with auto passthrough I believe. It has to be a MKV file. MP4 doesn’t support pcm. You need to change the file extension on the summary tab.

Hi, I haven't used the hardware specific settings myself, but I have heard some people have had significant encode speed increases. If your card is supported I would definitely suggest giving it a try. Also, 4K Blurays are encoded in 10 Bit, so I don't think there is any benefit to using 12 Bit as you won't be able to put lost colour info back in. Personally I use the Staxrip program which I have been doing my video reencoding for a while, I recently upgraded my PC from a Phenom II x4 945 to a Ryzen 5600g and the speed is much faster, now I use the x265 experimenting trying to get the best quality on the less space, the problem is always the time the encoding takes, these days I am testing the x265 from AMD and by moving some things I have achieved an encoding speed of 173fps for a 1080p video at 60fps, but it still does not convince me the quality obtained, do you have any advice to improve the compression of this codec by GPU? Seems very hit or miss for me. Sometimes I will get lucky and the converted file will be like 20-25% the size of the original, but usually it is more like 75-80% of the original file size. It sucks because 4K videos take a looong time to encode, and there is no way of knowing whether I'll get lucky with 20% file size, or 80% file size 😕 I even have my settings at a very slightly lower quality setting (25 instead of 24) which theoretically would make the file even smaller.

@@TiredOfImbecileLibtards Hi, unfortunately there isn't a "one setting fixes all" solution here, as every video will be different, and require different amounts of filtering. The best way to handle this is download the free program called Avidimux and slice of a 3 minute piece of your source video and run it through handbrake with various settings to test it. This way you don't have to wait for the whole movie to encode, just do a little piece until you are happy with your settings, then do the whole movie.

There's no such thing as "4K Bluray". There are Blu-Ray discs and there are UHD discs. None of them are 4K and none of them are a combination of the two formats. Even all so-called "4K UHD" discs are actually UHD, not 4K. Blu-Ray resolution is FHD (Full High Definition; a misnomer, because there are greater resolutions, now), at 1920 x 1080 UHD (Ultra High Definition) is 3820 x 2160 4K (Literally standing for four thousand pixels) is 4096 x 2160 "4K UHD" discs are UHD, because their resolution is 3820 x 2160, not 4096 x 2160. (The same with KZbin's resolution, despite their claims of it being 4K.) Only movies at cinemas are in 4K. "4K UHD" discs may use a blue laser to read the discs, but their name isn't "4K Blu-Ray", because those are two different formats in two different resolutions.
