You got it wrong. A mother's helper isn't a young adult and they don't watch kids while mom leaves the house. You get it right that they are INEXPERIENCED-the role has always been for new sitters between 8 and 18 and honestly usually 8 years old to about 13 years old. You're right here with parents changing the definition so they can hire an experienced babysitter and pay them peanuts. You even contradict yourself by repeatedly saying they don't have any experience. Yes. because adult females seeking childcare work have usually babysat so they have experience. They can watch kids with no one home. I was a mother's helper when I was ten, TEN and you're over here talking about them being adults. When I turned 18, I had been babysitting for 5 years and even had had a sort of summer nanny job (yes I'm aware that industry standard says you must be 18 to be a nanny).

So, one of the reasons my agency failed was because of the rigorous practices I was putting in place and I had started to float the idea of doing background checks on the parents. I also had no investors, am totally broke and doing everything completely on my own, so there’s also that but my adherence to proper vetting, fair contracts for nannies, and floating parent background checks were a big part of my downfall, I think. A stronger agency with better funding might do better.

I believe Illinois is a two-party consent state, which means you would need to disclose that the caregiver is being recorded. It does not matter who the caregiver is hired through. Even guests in your home should know that you are recording if the device is not visible.

Useful video, thank you. One edit is that nannies actually earn between $23 and $34/35 per hour in the US depending on region, duties, experience, etc. Anyone paying $15-20 to a nanny is significantly underpaying. Daycare work is so important. It’s criminal that, currently, care workers will be permanently in poverty if they choose this profession. $10-15 per hour. Ghastly. We need federal investment in care.

Unfortunately, I don't have a checklist handy. The role of a household manager is somewhat fluid, but the main determining factor between that and a family assistant is handling appointment scheduling and managing vendors.

A nanny shouldn’t be expected to use her personal vehicle to transport children at all. Mileage reimbursement is a fraction of the actual cost to maintain a nanny vehicle. Also when a car seat is safely secured in a vehicle it’s not possible to just remove and reinstall whenever you need access to your backseats. It’s not fair to essentially turn your nanny’s vehicle into a two-seater. Finally when the vehicle does need maintenance (inevitably) the nanny must miss work (and pay) to have repairs made. It’s not economical considering the average nanny pay.

I do not recommend that hourly workers schedule unpaid time for a meeting during off hours to notify their employer of resignation. That is too much to expect of an employee, despite the connected or familial nature of this job. Notifying your employer of resignation is a work task you can do during work hours. Be sure to provide the amount of notice listed in your written contract, or 2 weeks notice at a minimum if a notice period isn't listed in your contract. I recommend speaking with the parent while the child is napping or while the child is occupied with another parent, screen time, etc. Hopefully, you have a scheduled time at least once a week where you and the parent check in and chat before you leave for the week. That may be your most ideal time for notice. Prepare a written, printed notice letter to give your employer and follow it up same-day with an email as your electronic record of giving notice. If the nature of the job never allows for a quiet 10 minutes to speak with the parent, email the parent your notice including a genuine thank you for the opportunity. Let them know you are available for a follow-up conversation at their convenience, if they prefer.

I’m a nanny & understand nanny perspectives on dish limits but fundamentally it doesn’t help parents that much to just put your own dishes & kid dishes in the dishwasher and leave all the other ones. Talk about dishes & make a daily load or unload of the dishwasher part of the job, and wipe down kitchen countertops. That said, understand that your nanny isn’t there to come in on Monday and clean up a whole weekend of your dirty dishes all over the counter.

Also advocate for yourself. Require guaranteed full time (40 hour) pay weekly in the nanny contract. I love the job, but you have to be very careful with some parents. It’s very easy for domestic workers to be taken advantage of. Also look out for the “flexible scheduling”. This often means being available without being compensated yet unable to take time off when you need to handle private affairs. Be wary of any Nanny job without a specific start and end time written in the contract. If you do choose a family with this type of schedule you absolutely can request compensation for that. Learn from my mistake! We are all here to help each other.

I have two part time jobs. The first job, I had been looking for a while so I took what I could get. The newest job, I said, a paid week at my typical part time week. Note that I don't live in a nanny market. I live in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. Being that you're in Seattle, you might have heard of this rapidly growing small city. It's full of people who want to just do drop off care in their own home. I also asked for some nanny education paid for.

But the live in nanny is getting free accommodation and free food which is very expense these days. Also, lot of these nanny prefer live in options vs employers asking them to live in due to there life conditions. So i dont think its fair to pay them the fair rate, its ridiculous to expect the same! And most of them do not work after there shift ends so there is added advantage of help after their time is done!

I had someone try to pay me below minimum wage for my skills. Just because we are live in doesn't mean we can't expect to have similar savings expectations. In my country there is usually a deduction in pay, but still falls within the standard pay scale. The nanny usually only has one room, and limited access to the rest of the house, which is the equivalent to a bedsit, which is usually cheap to rent. If someone tries to pay below the lower standard amount, and the deduction is worth more than the cost of renting a bedsit then they are paying too little (utilities can be added to this estimation). Also, if they are live in but the hours differ (holidays require more hours and the school semesters are part-time) few nannies would be able to pay rent on the part-time wage if the children are in school, and this would make it difficult for the parents to find appropriate childcare. Live in nannies benefit parents with school-aged children, and they restrict a lot of what the nanny can do socially, this balances out in a way that indicates how nannies should be paid. If I were offered a fully-furnished flat in the city, and the parents wanted to pay slightly below minimum wage, I should see that as fair, but everyone who can afford to give a flat to a nanny usually offer incredibly high salaries.

@@user-ek8wd3uo3u in my experience and i am sure several others can echo has well , the nanny has access to the entire house (although i am not sure why that is needed), they have access to the full pantry, food etc and they can do what they want after hours. You already save more half your pay just by living in since you save in rent and food! The total hours put in is the same regardless of live in or live out, if you put in more hours u get paid for that so i am very confused with the argument! More people are out of jobs due to exorbitant expectation rather than negotiating and being reasonable!

Ooh spicy punctuation and text-speak. By that logic, no one needs a living room, a dining room, a study, or a garden (which they don't, but they are nice). The nanny might like to watch TV, or use the home gym, because they cannot fit a gym in their room. It can be really uncomfortable using common spaces with other people, and some families want the nanny to stay in their room when not on the clock. Live in is usually salaried with no overtime, where live out is hourly. I get paid WAY above the market value, but I also put in free overtime because I like the family and it makes my job easier (even with the additional hours I still make above the market rate). They get the best out of me because they pay for it. I would be a lot more reluctant to work the same overtime hours for less pay, as I know I could work in other fields and make more. It doesn't cost the family much to offer a room except a few more utilities and food (which I pay for due to allergies). It isn't like they are renting a flat for the nanny and it is costing them $1,000 per month to house them. It isn't always about the money; nannies have their own lives with other commitments, and need time off, just like every other job. If you live in, if is VERY difficult to say "no" to overtime. You aren't saving half, you are saving a quarter to a third of your income (as it is like living with several other people in an apartment-share, rather than having your own place). Are you a nanny in full-time employment? Nope, there is a worker shortage, not an unemployment problem. If you want a job you could walk into most service jobs/childcare/teaching and start tomorrow, but people are being more selective and are aware of predatory and manipulative business practices that could make them vulnerable to exploitation.

I wish you could address what a nanny should do if the vacation forces them to work 7+ days in a row during the trip. I had a family pay my regular rate, but I ended up having to work 19 days straight as we left midweek on the trip, then worked the 2 weeks on their vacation, then came home midweek and had to finish out the work week before I could have a weekend off. This family’s reasoning was they were only half days and I got to enjoy the Bahamas.

One of the things I prediscuss with my families for travel is to include a paid day off when you return as part of the package. Also, I prediscuss with my family having one to two days off during the vacation if more than five days so it’s still ethical work wise. Hope that helps! It’s easy to get trapped without options while traveling.

I have CPR/AED/First aid, sleep training, Idaho RISE training (daycare worker training) and food handlers. Can you recommend a general nanny course or a NCS course that's under a grand, ideally under $500? I've been working outside of nannying since I moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in August. It's a tight market here and I'm looking to level up. I wouldn't work in a daycare or preschool. I care so much for children, the idea of seeing them pinned down at nap time, fed paint, fed choke hazard food, waking up from naps screaming bloody murder and more. Nope. That's not an option.

It really only makes sense for a younger adult who is living with parents and wants to move out, but has the option to stay. That way when the nanny job ends, you move back in with your parents while you figure out your next move. Once you have your own apartment, moving in with a family to take a nanny job gets really complicated. My friend did a live in nanny job for a year after college. She paid off her college loans from not needing to pay rent for that year.

This family I was going to work for expected me to work 57.5 hours one week, and 24 hours the following. Alternating back and forth. With no overtime pay. They tried to bank my hours because the following week I'd be working less...I waited to start working for them for a month. The day before I start working they finally send me the schedule and my heart dropped because I added up nearly 60 hours. When I was told I'd work a full time week, then part time. They also tried to pay me a low balled salary which is also illegal. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Meanwhile, they do everything else "on the books" and file Nanny taxes to make money back for what they pay out to me...but suddenly the rules don't apply for overtime hours or salary pay. 😡 People suck.

It was definitely not my fault but I was still panicking that there could be injuries I didn’t see on the children or myself, how were we going to get home and scariest of all, would I ever be employable again? If you’ve ever experienced this you know this is the absolute worst for a caregiver.
