I love the idea of "universal design." I'm reminded of trying to change my baby's diaper in a restaurant bathroom that had an awkward fold down changing table but not a single hook or surface to place the diaper bag on (besides the floor). Another time I was at a kid's party at a bowling alley and a dad needed to change his daughter's diaper but there was no changing table in the men's room. I love how this makes it clear that good design is not an us and them situation. It benefits everyone.

I loathe modern architecture it feels anti-human depressive cold and soulless. The sterilized nature of it with its lines not found in nature is just so anti-human there's no beauty in it

A nicely balanced and articulated presentation. For me, what matters most in a painting I am viewing is to what extent it engages me perceptually, viscerally, or emotionally. It doesn't matter what style of painting it is. The effect it has on me is a reflection of my inner experience, or consciousness.

Music, I get because it makes me feel something. And if there’s words I’m also connecting to the message. But after watching your video, I wonder if abstract art is my country music - it’s just not for me. 🤷🏾‍♂️

as a minimalist I enjoy modern architecture, I understand it can be soulless for some but I think the beauty of a city comes from the interaction between the modern the old the nature and the people, Tokyo is a great example of a beautiful non pretentious city.

What I think really kills modern architecture is computer aided drafting and rigid 3d drafting programs like Revit. The copy clip mentality guarantees monotony. The limited blocks are based on readily available standard industrialized products that have made craftsmanship and artisans obsolete in an an attempt to build cheaper buildings in shorter periods of time. The lack of permanence and a throw away mentality has lead to ever increasing levels of urban decay, pollution and environmental destruction.

Most of us don't like it, and yet we keep on replacing with this. It makes me sad about the collapse of architecture after WWII. Most everything built now is simplistic, misshapen, and ugly. We don't even wear nice clothes anymore.... garbage is often strewn on our streets now. And maybe the most telling: the so-called "modern" public statues of ourselves we sculpt often look hideous and misshapen too. I have had a theory about this..... I feel that humanity as a whole collectively feels ugly because of what it is doing to the planet. All the mounting extinctions of our cousins the animals are weighing on us. Is this a subconscious expression of it?

This was really wonderful -- thank you! I will share this with my colleagues, who, like I, guide architecture tours in Boston with @Boston By Foot. One point: at about 1:30 you identify Kallmann, McKinnell and Knowles as the architects of Boston City Hall Plaza. Not so, they only did Boston City Hall. The lead architect for the project, including the layout of the plaza, was I.M. Pei. The building shown in the rearground of the photo at 1:30 is the JFK Federal Building by The Architects Collaborative, a Cambridge, Massachusetts firm led by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.

Art expressions at it best is a subjective reaction to the present in its own time. Thats what make art exclusive and a uniq reprecentation. These paintings is a reprecentation of that. Good or bad? It is what it is - our time.

Thank you for highlighting the renovations and restorations of an historic structure! What a great idea for a KZbin Video that I hope you'll make into a series. I will watch every one! I don't know that I can pick a favorite historical building, because I love so many of them! I'm a huge fan of classical architectural styles, so restoring those buildings always gets me! So here's a list of a few historical landmark buildings I love: Mount Vernon; Old College at my alma mater, University of Delaware; and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, just down the road from me near Lynchburg, VA.

25 seconds in and I see a building from my university! LOL As for the topic - I appreciate the idea behind post-modernism as a big middle finger to the absurdly boring "modern" structures from the 50's onward. The designs are often playful, clever, inspiring, and fun to look at. Some look like a drunk piled some Legos together, to the extent that no one in the room shouted "The emperor has no clothes" when the design was presented to the board for approval. Personally, I'm a fan of classical architectural forms in general, and "adaptive reuse" of historical structures whenever possible (instead of tearing them down). But I like when a post modern design can take cues from the local landscape in order to build something pleasing to the residents as well as clever and fun.

Fungus. That's why we don't anymore. Fungal lung infections, such as valley fever are life-threatening... And that's with the dry earth being kicked up in the southwest United States. To the north, there's more health issues with a nasty black mold... Think you'll get away from health complications by building with granite blocks? Think again! Lots of granite is mildly radioactive and dumps radon gas into the environment, which is a major contributing factor for lung cancer in people who don't smoke... There's a reason why we build with wood. It's abundant, potentially sustainable and a replenishing resource (if you're responsible about it). Be aware that lots of the bullshit lumber from China is imbedded with formaldehyde, which it off-gasses into homes when idiots make furniture with it. 😂

The compressive strength of mud bricks - even with 8% concrete mixed in is an order of magnitude less than standard bricks. Masonry is already out of favor compared to often simpler mediums of construction such as steel and wood. This is why we don’t use mud brick, especially in places with earthquake hazards. I think we need to invest more in incorporating locally sourced dirt / clay into construction by coming up with better brick designs and mixes. That coupled with sustainably harvested wood could become a planet saving construction medium. Steel and concrete need to go whereever possible if we want to end climate change.

It's not going to replace architects, yet, but it is going to reduce the number of lower level architects needed. Many of the tasks done by this new AI tech is currently done by levels lower than the project manager. So I see a need for new ways to train lower level architects to get to the point they can make the decisions a project manager can, but much fewer of them. AI is going to do to white color workers what machines did to blue color workers. Not eliminate them, but reduce the number required for many tasks.

Quite exciting someone to expose the elephant in the drafting room. Extremely well done and informative. I look at these buildings as architectural “freak shows”. Buildings on the whole are for people to use and experience. Today’s architects should be improving previous knowledge and skills not encouraging a world of Evil Knievel designers.

Ask a child if it's beautiful and should be kept or if it's ugly and should be demolished, and boom, you'll have the answer. Sometimes I think adults overthink stuff too much. Like finding reasons to think that such depressing buildings have some sort of intrinsic beauty.
