Thanks for replying to my comment! I'm actually in favor of adopting the international standard for exit signs; I'm just not sure how it would actually be implemented in the US (as seen with the debacle in "adopting" the metric system). As with most things in the US unfortunately it'll probably take some sort of nationally notable tragedy caused by poor exit signage to get anything changed.

I think there could be few reasons behind the resistance to adopt the ISO exit sign in the US: * It's not well-known that there even is an international standard exit sign, even among architects and building maintenance custodians * Updating a building to meet new codes is only required when remodeling; there's no requirement to remodel or update otherwise * ISO standard exit signs are perceived as unavailable -- for example, at my local home center I can get green (and red!) "EXIT" signs but not ISO standard pictographic signs; the limited selection of pictographic signs are nonstandard * Americans are simply stubborn and resistant to change

In my view a pictogram is better than text even for those who understand the language, as it is easier to recognise from a distance & between different stylistic variations & typefaces. When it comes to measurements, the UK is bilingual in a similar way to Luxembourg with Luxembourgish, French & German. In the UK, many text exit signs say "Way Out" instead of "Exit". This is not usually used for emergency exits though. Emergency exit signs are required to be made of phosphorescent materials, but the pictogram is optional.

Learned of your channel via Tom Scott and have now watched and enjoyed a number of your videos. As a fan of graphic design, Aeron chairs, Yayoi Kusama and Brutalism, I'm sure I will continue to like your future uploads. When you mentioned American pennies, I thought of Rick from Pawn Stars who likes to remind people with old coins that the UK has pennies, and the USA has cents, lol.

I am left handed. I try to notice day to day what is made asymmetrically that doesn't have to be, but some of it is so normalised that it took me til I was in the workplace to see even how the structure of a room is designed for right handed users - kitchens being a big example. Does this play into many areas of architecture?
@ARTiculations
@ARTiculations 6 жыл бұрын
Yes actually it's often called "Ambidextrous design" which in Interior Design is a philosophy to design for both handed users. Great idea! I'll add that to the list =D

It's interesting, while I'm right handed, there are some technologies that I've adapted ambidexterity for, including mice (even ones that are decidedly intended for right hands, though some of the extra buttons go to waste when I'm using left handed).

I joined after the Tom vid too. Loving your response to comments vid. I'll have to watch some more of your older ones now. You've said that the UK use the symbol for the exit sign. Is that because of the EU or before? There's some good vids out there about our road signs that tie in quite nicely.

The problem with “wheelchair accessible” exit signs is that in case of a fire or other emergency you don’t want someone that is handicapped looking around for an exit that “suits their wheelchair” you want them to GET out of the building.

Hey ! I'm from France and here, we have standard signs and in older buidings (from seventies for exemple I guess) we have green and white boxes with "sortie" or "issue de secours" written on it ("sortie" still almost used today for for door who can use as well as common exit or as fire exit). An other thing is in the Parisian subway : there's a few stations who are accessible for people in wheelchair and in theses stations there's special exit signs for them which go to shelters

Nice follow up! The accessible exit sign idea is interesting, something I hadn't considered before. Strangely, I think that's one thing that wouldn't be needed in the US should it adopt the ISO exit sign, thanks to the Americans With Disabilities act. This is one place where the US is quite ahead of many other jurisdictions (also of note is that it is not a building code, but civil rights legislation), where pretty much any project where you would need to replace the exit sign you'd need to take the exit itself into account and bring it up to code, which by definition needs to be accessible to be considered an exit. It could be useful in grandfathered buildings that might not have accessible exits, but then it might get confusing in buildings that don't have or need that distinction... again, though, that's just in the US. I think it'd be be great in places where the accessibility requirements are not as rigorous! :)

Hi from the Czech Republic! In my country, the wheelchair-accessible exit sign is mostly just a normal ISO exit sign with a wheelchair next to it (literally touching it with millimetres of spacing). I like it. Why do we need to incorporate that to just one picture?

I watched both this video and your "Brief History..." video. I work in the signage industry and act as a code and accessibility researcher. In the US every state and municipality can adopt their own codes. So you can mix and match your codes. Take Texas for instance, one city's stairwell signs complies with IBC. Another city might follow the NFPA stairwell signs, while a third city has adopted their own version not complying with any model code. So it gets very confusing real quick, add into it the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and it makes it even more unclear. But I agree with everything you have said about the US adopting it. But this type of confusion comes when several organizations are all developing their own code/guidelines. They overlap just enough to be dangerous. But great video!!

Kinda random question that may be a bit difficult to answer but how would you say the Canadian provincial licensure process differs from the American states system?
@KannikCat
@KannikCat 6 жыл бұрын
It's quite similar. All of North America shares a bit of the same registration system, that being the standard exams created and administered by NCARB. Once you've completed those, certain provinces/states may have supplementary exams (California does, for example -- usually if the province/state has made a lot of additions or changes to the model code, then they'll have extra exams) that you also need to pass before you are granted a license in that province/state. Then it's all dependent on the province state when it comes to dues, and frequency and any requirements to renew, etc. :)

@ARTiculations
@ARTiculations 6 жыл бұрын
The map indicates green is only a recommendation in Michigan. And even if the constructor takes the recommendation - it'll likely only apply in new buildings. Just like how most Canadians still mostly see the old red exit signs too, even though the build code has made the green ISO sign mandatory. Because most of the time building codes do not retroactively apply to exiting buildings.

Architecture related video request about building applications- As a german architect I am always baffled what americans are allowed to build- Canada seems to be similar. Here a shack above 30m³ has about the same paperwork as an office complex- there are a lot of rules and you are basically not allowed to build anything ;) meanwhile in a US tv show someone builds a wooden castle with 5 floors and the size of disneyland....

There's the tradition in the US of two colors: Red for "emergency exit" and green for "normal exit." The ISO sign makes no distinction of what type of exit it is. Is the green color beckoning me toward this door where I will be assaulted by this insane squiggly man who will arrest me for going through the emergency exit?
@ragnkja
@ragnkja 6 жыл бұрын
The ISO sign is specifically for exits that are to be used in an emergency. If you want to indicate which exits are preferred outside of emergencies, you could add non-illuminated signs that say "Exit"/"To exit" to guide people to said preferred exits.

Honestly there are very few people who are too stupid to not understand the basic meaning of “E X I T” because English is so international, or to at least get the idea because it’s right above every exit. So I don’t believe a change to pictograms is necessary.

Did you watch the other video? She mentioned in it that because green is already associated with "go" and red is associated with "stop", green makes sense for a sign that is supposed to suggest that people go that way. Also as she said in this video, research suggests that green is the most suitable color for color blind people
@ragnkja

Green looks a lot brighter to the human eye than the same intensity of red or blue light. It's also likely to stand out more if there's a fire.
