How is it, me being from the Netherlands with absolutely no Scottish heritage nor tie to Scottish culture whatsoever, that I feel those songs so deeply? That many a song in Julie's repertoire can bring me on the verge of tears as it pulls me in? Ali Smith's words resonate so much (though perhaps on a different level than those born in that land). This music feels like home down to my very bones, yet I don't speak the language.I haven't spent more than a week in your beautiful country. Yet I yearn to return there, that land has a place in my heart along with the music. I can't explain it, yet here it is, a deep longing for something perhaps only my heart understands. I want to learn Gaelic, even if just to understand the lyrics.

I keep coming back to this video for one primary reason - the dog's eyes. They have something in them which encapsulates that mysterious faculty of mind which we term 'beautiful.' When I die, the first being I want to meet is my lovely girl, my Border Collie, Em. She died of a tumour at age four-and-half. It broke my bloody heart and I still mourn forty year on..

I’ve been listening to this since I was a kid. I’m a 22-year-old black woman, and I will always love myself for being so open to music around the world. Never stop sharing. We’re all human and have good and bad sides, and music brings us together in so many ways. ❤

Julies voice is so special; she has the ability to change tone and delivery for any particular song. This song, accompanied by wonderful musicians, brings deep emotion out from me. I hope I can get to see her live before my life is through. Iain

So beautiful, and the song is beautiful too 😊😁 Beautifully authentic though. This could DEFINITELY be used in BIG BUDGET film scores, WITH Julie singing and performing of course.

Cain and Abel. The burden of the first born, the creativity of the second born. The tiller of the fields, the shephard. The double face of Janus, looking up to the parents, looking down at the other siblings. Under the auspices of the first born the second born can take flight. A third can rebel. Through the long years we have lived our love has deepened. This song is a treasure.

Halò Julie, Tha mi à Canada. Tha beagan Gàidhlig agam, dulich Tha mi ag ionnsachadh air duo lingo. Tha gaol agam air do sheinn. Bidh thusa agus an luchd-ciùil a’ deanamh ceòl brèagha. Tha mi an dòchas ur faicinn ann an Alba latha air choireigin a dh’ aithghearr. Moran taing. I did cheat and use some google translate but I am at the beginning learning Gàidhlig. I am à professionally trained musician, mostly jazz, and I see you are very talented along with your fellow musicians that blend beautifully. Please don’t stop. This is a gift for so many of us, drawing us into such a wonderful Scottish art and culture. Bless you.

Julie’s comment in an interview for this album, where she talked about music and language being connected to the land of a people really deeply struck me. It made me realize the loss of self-understanding and heritage that unguided modernism and “change” brings to the world. Some of the most meaningful and beautiful music is that I’d ethnic sounds which has had centuries of history and stories as is foundation.
