After a once in a lifetime* wind storm here in rural Ireland. Power is still out after 5 days due to trees down etc. Got a hurricance lamp. Its fabulous 👌 Thanks for the wick tutorial.

It took a while until the mora bug bit me. When i was young, i thought the more expensive, the better. Now that i learned a lot more about handling knives and bushcrafting, i know for fact, with a cheap mora and a saw, you get almost everything done. The spine is handled with file in about three minutes, and it will throw sparks as well. Nice review

Highly recommend not using cotton wick's .... They give off toxins, no kidding, do some research. I only use carbon felt. No adjustments needed once set properly. Will last forever without any any fiddling.

Should I buy this axe or the gränfors brok large carving axe. I don’t have a real carving axe so I don’t know what I want to make yet.
@RaindanceBushcraft28 күн бұрын
@nucleardreams493 I love my Large Carving Axe, but the price of it nowadays, at least in Canada, makes it a ‘later’ purchase. This axe is good for much finder work than the Gränsfors, but you can still chop out a spoon blank with it, so I’d say this one is likely a better all-round axe for carving.

You have camped out in a vehicle. We went to Long Beach on Vancouver Island. The camping area was in a rain forest. We slept in your father's station wagon. When we got up everything was wet! Remember the shells we collected? After we got back to your father's apartment we hung them out of the window to dry. The next morning they were full of maggots!

I've not dealt with boiled linseed oil but I've heard of the danger and will react accordingly if I ever do so I appreciate videos like this. Because of the way my mind works though I'm now curious if you could make this hazard useful. I mean obviously it's never going to be less hazardous but could you say start a woodstove using this principle. some stoves have combustion fans so if you had newspapers or paper towels stacked in with your kindling could this be used to get the fire going without a torch?
@RaindanceBushcraft2 ай бұрын
I dunno if you could really make it all that useful because the ignition can't really happen on command; it depends on airflow and all sorts of stuff like that. Unless you just had your oil-soaked towels or paper just sitting under your kindling and didn't need the fire to light at a specific time I wonder if anyone's experimented with anything like that, actually...

Thanks for sharing, yup those high end mattresses are high in price. I picked me up a second hand UNIGEAR Camfy P3 Air Sleeping Pad for $82.00NZD including shipping. Took the risk and got lucky, as it had zero damage. I tested it one night at home, can't say I was overly impressed. Its comfortable enough, but feels like it sucks the warmth out of you. Although I was testing it in the middle of winter, and being an R - Value 2. As you stated it's not really designed for winter. I found that placing a warm blanket between myself and the sleeping pad, quickly fixed that issue. It was my first time using a proper inflatable sleeping pad. So I need to do more testing also.
@RaindanceBushcraft2 ай бұрын
I love it when you take a chance and the purchase works out. I always have my sleeping bag or a wool blanket between me and the pad because an r2 pad won’t keep me very warm.

I just spent 8 days without power due to Hurricane Helene passing through. Interesting times, and the one lesson learned quick and hard was that the new-fangled stuff just plain sucked balls. Battery-powered anything was so prone to failure that it was amazing, but even if it worked.... it still forced me to go out and get batteries when new ones were needed. One tiny wire coming loose killed the lamps. Batteries go bad, corroding the inside of a light. Compare that to my oil lanterns, though, and it was night-n-day. The Feuerhand lanterns are the best, and the only brand still being made in Western Civilization so you know you're getting a good, solid product when you buy one. Well worth the money! Hurricane Lanterns run on "lamp oil", kerosene, or diesel. A little fuel goes a very long way, too. I ran my lanterns every night for a few hours between sunset and bedtime. I was very very comfortable and could even read by the light they put out. If it had been a colder time of the year, I'm sure that I would have appreciated the little bit of heat they give off. 8 Days of Darkness and I maybe burned up a little more than a quart of oil. While all my battery-powered stuff was dead, my oil lamps worked perfectly even though they'd sat for a year or more since the last power outage. You cannot beat that kind of performance and reliability. Since then, I've bought more hurricane lanterns. The Meva line, made in the Czech Republic and no longer made, is a very nice quality for the price and I recommend them for folks just getting started. If you can find one that's not rusted out on ebay, grab it and feel good about the purchase. Chalwyn is another brand that's since gone belly up. Made in England in the 50's, they are very solid performers and have a good feel of quality about them. Again, if you find them in good condition, grab them and rejoice. Of course, if you want to buy brand new lanterns that you can trust, Feuerhand is the only name in the game. Every other maker is supporting chicom industry, and that's not something we want in our lives. Better to support an Allied Nation who has a reputation for quality engineering! When you buy Feuerhand lanterns, you're joining a fraternity that is quite robust, and the resale value of their works are good. Plus, you can get the lanterns in all sorts of designer colors to match your decor!! For the price, Feuerhand really is the best bang for your buck.

I've never seen anyone be able to use this knife to throw sparks. the edge is too blunt. so it seems it's a quality flaw on these. It's more of a fluke than a standard, that it should have that feature. It also cannot do battoning. The shaft loosen immediately. So you actually destroyed your brand new knife there. that's what you reviewed. congrats. =P
