Must be a US spec' option for those hot southern states. UK/EU spec' 1988 911's have the oil cooler but not the fan.

The front spoiler looks good and adds the additional support in front as you mentioned. I have noticed your volt meter in the cigarette lighter on several of your videos and have seen your video pointing it out, what company makes it? Does it stay put while from a bumpy road? Mine is similar but I can’t seem to find one long enough to fit my G Body 911 properly. Any advice since the cigarette lighter socket is a few inches deep?

In the name of science, I had some open road today to keep the hammer down and dig a bit deeper into the effect of speed and no spoilers (F and R). I felt the road feel rapidly evaporate at around 120 MPH and while I was far from losing control for the car, it was a disconcerting feeling when going that fast under hard acceleration.

Nice job pointing out some of the unique and cool features, I have an earlier G model with the 2.7 mag case. But I do have to disagree about the impact bumpers, USA safety regulations required them and to my eye, always looks "stuck on". Later years did a nice job of incorporating them in the the rest of the body lines.

Hi what was your main machine shop work... did the crank need grinding and is there under size bearings if the crank needs the grind..cheers
@3.2Carrera
@3.2Carrera Ай бұрын
I had Ollies in Lake Havasu, AZ do the machine work. My crank was in excellent condition so all it needed was a polish. My case did need a line bore though. One thing to consider is the main bearing quality these days and consistency of the thickness. I do see there's bearings available for ground cranks out there but don't have a lot of information since I didn't need them. The main thing is to measure the crank and bolt the case together after machine work to measure the journals along with each bearing's thickness. There will be variances between each one so mix and match to get it in spec and hope you can find a match. The bearings these days are a bit loose (small) so for me I had my mains and rods coated. Good luck!

The proper oem airfilter box is missing. I don’t know why people are thinking that crappy Chienese sport air intake filters are good for the car. It is a well engineered car and there is a purpose why they put the filter box into it.
@3.2Carrera
@3.2Carrera Ай бұрын
I still have the stock airbox and it's not going anywhere. It's off the car because I found it very difficult to get my hands behind the airbox to unfasten it for service. This filter is the MSDS unit and is legit in the Porsche community. They let in more dirt than the stock filter, are most efficient when cleaned and re-oiled frequently.

I've had enough time to start getting used to it and so far so good. I used the recommended settings for FL, GA, and NC from the radar forum and found a good data cable that actually works with my computer so can go it very quickly now. I think I'll probably start scaling back on the X band as I refine it since that's where I get the false alarms because not really used in my area at all.

Yeah agree. Have an 89' Carrera. I took my spoiler off and replaced it with a standard deck lid. Looks better to me and much lighter. That spoiler is a pig. Kept the front air dam. I don't notice any difference in handling. I only hit triple digits on rare occasions and even then only for a moment. My car is geared very short. I got it to rip around on twisty roads. The car lives at speeds of 40-70. I'm not breaking any speed records, so having the spoiler wouldn't make any appreciable difference. My spoiler is now wall art.

If I had gotten a 3.2 with a G50 trans, instead of the 1983 911 SC that I did get, I'd probably still have it. That 1983 was a money pit, and there should've been a class-action lawsuit filed against Porsche for the broken head studs that were problematic for that generation. Plus, that 915 transmission was the absolute worst transmission I've ever owned. My '83 was burgundy with a tan and burgundy interior, 7 & 8 inch wheels, and yes, it had a turbo tail. Beautiful car, but never again...
@3.2Carrera
@3.2Carrera Ай бұрын
Yes, I'd be very pissed too. Even today people pay all the money for these cars on the auction sites only to have their backs broken after they look the car over after delivery. My '89 actually had 3 broken studs, but since I bought from a friend I got it cheap enough to have plenty left over for a complete rebuild. The aftermarket has really stepped up with shoring up the weak links of the car.

@@3.2Carrera I had half the head studs on the driver's side snap before 100K miles. Got the engine rebuilt for $12K, which was a "bargain". I've read that they fixed this issue with the 3.2 by using turbo head studs, so that's a plus.

It's similar to a 917 knob, but not the same. Grotto_engineering on Ebay makes this particular one. I wanted to make sure I had the shift pattern of the G50 on the top incase I ever was forced to valet the car and it was an option with this knob. It fastens with set screws over the threads, but it has not moved at all in a year and a half. I think the things you touch on the car like the this and the steering wheel makes the car much better.

I had a 1987 Targa, which I sold at 140,000 miles. The paint was faded, the interior was tired, and it needed a new windshield. I had the dealer replace the worn steering rack and tie rods, so the steering was precise as new, but still heavy at parking lot and parallel parking speeds. And the air-cooled cars had tons of built in understeer as designed in, which was really noticeable when I went to a very quick-steering MINI Cooper S. I didn't feel like spending $10k to restore it. And I wanted a car with A/C that actually worked (Southern California).

Great to get your feedback. My buddy has a Cooper S- cool car and we drive together once in a while on trips. Yes, the AC does suck on these. I blew two compressors and then took the whole thing out and I'm better off for it. New window tints help a lot these days. Anyway I see the build-in understeer as well, but I did my own alignment with updated specs and it's still in there a bit. But on your targa you probably made the right move if you didn't want to have to start sinking more than the 10K into it. If it's an engine rebuild it's way north of that these days. Thanks again for your comment.
