The catamaran #82 is Paul Goddard, the creator of the DF95 Dragonfoilers. This cat has now been sold but still in New Zealand. Paul is now building and sailing a trimaran. Same sail number. You can see his trimaran in this video from 2024. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKiXfaSlYrCeY5o One of his trimarans is being sold to a member of the Gosport club

The sailboat really sticks to the water!
@PerthMini40man25 күн бұрын
This one has smaller diameter cross beams compared to the trimaran with the white main hull, so the platform of the 3 hulls flexes more. This lets the windward float dip in the bows, which changes the angle of attack of the windward foil to negative live - ie it is trying to hold down the windward float, resulting in a flatter sailing attitude. Might look a bit odd but is extremely effective as an automatic levelling system for the boat, better that more electronics linked to a gyro (cheaper, lighter, less likely to get wet and stop working) as some people have told me I should use.

Insane amount of twist on those beams!
@PerthMini40man25 күн бұрын
yes but this twist in the setup lets the windward foil develop negative lift, so holding down the windward float and letting the boat foil flatter

Nice to see 10 Raters in a breeze. I would love to see how a Mini 40 would match up against them, even if it was a mismatch. I think others would be interested as well.

in those conditions, on an upwind-downwind course the 10ratrer would win

Hello, it's possible to purchase the conversion kit ? Or have some schema to reproduce it ? Thanks for your videos.
unfortunately no its not. There are not many of us around the world who sail/race these multihulls. There is a small group of guys at Pegasus who have Miuni40s and they could possibly organise regular racing with the club's permission. I am based in West Australia and I cannot find anyone to race against over there

Conclusion about the center board? Worth keep it or better without? Depending on the wind angle?
@ukmitch863 ай бұрын
Have you thought about using a gyro to drive a servo-positioned foil angle?
@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
Yes I have and discarded the idea. A gyro will only work if the two foils are in the water, and in a gust, unless the sails are eased the windward foil will come out of the water making any adjustment that the gyro might make irrelevant. So I set up the foils for port or starboard sailing and then play the sails on the winch. These boats have totally different behaviour to full size foilers. If you scaled us up to America's Cup size our rigs would be massive, and we would be much lighter. And the gusts that we experience - if scaled up to full size - would be horrendous. And then there is the matter of yet more electronics on board adding weight (and probably requiring an additional battery) to get wet and stop working. I have enough problems keeping what I have on board (one winch and two servos) dry......

Hi Andrew. We live in Darlington, but I sail the boat at Austin Lakes in Mandurah, as it is the best piece of water that I can find for these boats . I'll be sailing it again this coming Saturday afternoon if you are free to come and watch/have a go. I then take it to New Zealand on 12 November for 5 days of racing at Pegasus
Congrats, your efforts are brilliant. I read Bernard Smith's The 40 Knot Sailboat about 1971 and made a foiling 3-point trimaran model with leuward foil surface perpendicular & coaxial with the tilted wingsail, but no RC but it went fast then cartwheeled when it hit the lake shore in Portarlington, Victoria. Sadly no photos or videos. A keen memory was the unique ZZZZ noise as it screamed through the wind ripples on the lake. It went about 3X wind speed and changed direction with the increasing apparent wind. Fun! I'd love to make one like yours with modern radio.
@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
3 times the wind speed is very impressive. Do not think I have achieved that. How long was the model - pity you don't have any photos! I have tried with a tilted sail as well but not successful
@SamuelLanghorn3 ай бұрын
how are you making the L-shape foils? are there any tutorials you can recommend?
@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
the foils are not L shaped, they are at 45 degrees. Some people make moulds for them but build them up by first making an internal plug out of marine ply or foam and then lay up at least two layers of 200gsm carbon twill on both sides
@robmetz18673 ай бұрын
Very cool. It almost looks like these model foilers could benefit from ballast. A little more inertia for tacks and through lulls. Have you tried this?
@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
yes I have two packs of 250gms, one for each float, but these were for an older boat and for this boat I am trying to get the foils to keep it flat
@robmetz18673 ай бұрын
@PerthMini40man good to know you are thinking about this. I think there is merit in the inertia. In many sports out of always assumed that lighter is better this is not always true... keep up the good work!

@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
I thought the Windrider Wave had T foils? We have tried T foils and discarded them
@Stobb03 ай бұрын
@ the Rave does indeed have T-foils - it also has automatically actuated ailerons on the foils to maintain the foils’ depth in the water and keep the boat stable. The Windrider designers were, at one point, working on a new design with v-shaped foils like the ones on your boat but I believe that design never actually went into production.

Very nice. I've been looking at the Dragon 95 Foiler, or possibly even modifying a Dragon 65 to foil in a similar manor (tri-hull). Do you think there is a limit in the minimum hull size (length) that one could get a tri-hull to foil? is 65cm too small?
@PerthMini40man3 ай бұрын
Yes Paul Goddard makes a nice conversion kit for the DF95 and has just finished a kit for the DF65. None of us thought the DF65 conversion would foil but it does! You can contact Paul at this website rcfoilsailing.com/products/df-foiling-kit-no-hull?srsltid=AfmBOooXKDc-Ci2kBOSBcKt3Q9XcgSCKM3lyZte1JeJ1ki3iWZSQcCtc

That's a great idea! Would be good to do this before I take the boat to New Zealand for 5 days of racing on 12 November. But please can we have a big course, using some of the permanent buoys, and not tucked up under the trees! The boat needs to stretch its legs.

An RC AC75 is impossible. The have T foils that are constantly being adjusted by battery power and computer. The configuration would capsize at slow speeds at our size without a central keel

Hi, I have been following your channel for a long time. We had a similar size development multihull class in Finland even with some foil experiments 30 years back. As you have done such extensive iterations, develeopments with fantastic performance now I would like to ask is there any more information available about the current builds ( foils, hulls, controls and rigs). I would like start with the RC multihulls again (have had monohulls like DF65 etc.) but using the current best practise available. Are the hulls composite build or foam? Any website? Wpuld be great if you would make one review video going through the boat in great detail with all the lessons learnt.
