I use the following terms when speaking English to leave no doubt: "association football" or "soccer", "American football", "Canadian football", "Australian football", "Gaelic football", "Rugby league", "Rugby union". Anyone who knows one of these sports in English will clearly know what I'm talking about. The worst case scenario is that they find it oddly specific.

My least favorite AFL song is Melbourne's because they straight up just copied and pasted like 95% of the lyrics from the American patriotic song "Grand old Flag." It just really annoys me that they didnt even bother to come up with creative lyrics like the Crows did when they used the U.S. Marines song but created original lyrics that made it their own

Great video! As a foreigner (American) who has recently gotten into the AFL, this makes a lot of sense to me. Particularly, points #1, #2, #4, and #5 deal with identity and belonging. These are what makes your club, YOUR club. To draw an analogy from NBA (US basketball), you only have to look at the Charlotte Hornets, the NBA team in my home town. Charlotte is a basketball city, but the Hornets have really struggled since "returning" to the city. Why? The name works. It has historic significance. The location has been divisive. COVERAGE has been a HUGE issue. The games have not been on free-to-air channels. There's a paywall to watch. I also don't think that the Hornets have done a great job of connecting with immigrants, which is arguably the easiest way to build support in sport in western countries these days. But the biggest problem has nothing to do with identity. The Hornets don't win. So let's bring this analogy full circle: You mentioned that GWS has had some success. True. They made it to a grand final. But that is not enough. They need a premiership. Just check out the Giants wikipedia page. If you look at their attendance numbers during their run from 2016-2019, those numbers increased every year by thousands! 2020? A terrible season (plus COVID) and the numbers became disastrous. I know this video was made last year, but just look at the attendance number since 2021. They are on the rise. If the Giants have a good showing in the top 8 this year, they'll rise again next year. If the Giants can consistently stay in the top 8, they'll be just fine in the short term. In the long term, as you said, kids will grow up to be lifelong Giants supporters. The Swans had a legacy before Sydney, but winning is the reason the Swans work. And what helped them get into form? Ron Barassi followed by Plugger. GWS needs to win, but they also need icons on and off the field. I think they'll get there. It just takes time. They seem to be moving in the right direction at the moment. Lastly, as an aside, I don't get the Aussie obsession with not being "soft." Whether its Union, League, Australian Rules, or Gridiron, there's nothing soft about the players; they are all different codes that require different types of toughness. I'd like to see League or Gridiron players on a cricket pitch! They wouldn't last five minutes before doubling over in a wheeze.

Realistically north should relocate to the NT then Canberra gets their own standalone team
@geotard2 ай бұрын
Interestingly as North has always been the target of move or die rumours, it is the most succesful of the clubs touted as "moveable" and is firmly in the black for financials. Historically North Melbourne was the club that paved the way in the 70's for what is now a professional sport. Most clubs had expectations that their players would play or remain out of loyalty. North Melbourne under the guidance of chairman Allen Aylett and coach Ron Barrassi paid all players and paid others to join North. North was rewarded with 2 premierships in 75 and 77. Alan then chaired the VFL/AFL from 77 onward and lead to the creation of the AFL as it is today. When you're ripping into North at the pub and claiming it should just move, remember the Roos were the motivation and creator of the modern game and the reason we haven't been overtaken by soccer, gridiron and every other import and we still have our own national game. More importanly, struggling and small clubs are often where the changes come from that improve the sport and competition overall. If you're on top and have the most members and you want everything to remain the same you won't notice the interloper coming for your fans and will end up squabbling over the bones of a diminishing sport and fanbase. Leave every club where they are, encourage more teams, Hobart soon followed by Canberra next. Find a way to get NT into the comp (heat is a killer during AFL season) and continue with programs like Auskick. Participation of women is crucial for the longevity of AFL.

This is something that really should've happened 25 to 30 odd years ago when the AFL was forcing struggling Melbourne-based clubs to make the tough decisions. North just so happened to be a high-performing team throughout the mid to late 90s, which kind of gave the club a false sense of security. Once the memorable players such as McKernan, Carey, Martyn, King, Pike, Archer, Pickett and Bell, gradually began to either retire or move onto other clubs, the club retreated back to the stupid "Shinboner Spirit" claptrap, which just gives the club a poor-man's image that people like to pretend to say is appealing when in reality it isn't. They may well have become a great relocation story (like the Swans)... or not. We can only speculate. But it's not like the last 20-odd years have been anything to laugh about with them stubbornly remaining in Melbourne. Nevertheless it's too late now.

Absolutely zero logic was used (and this was edited with my nans toaster). I have many, many, many questions to how you leap to so many conclusions, How does it resemble previous clubs like Fitzroy and South Melbourne? (other then the logos) you just said it than moved on. The fact that there isn't a team in the capital, again irrelevant because what does it have to do with North Melbourne as a club? why not pick another random 'struggling' club? The stuff about us rejecting a move to the gold coast, then playing in Tassie due to crowd numbers, do you just pull this shit out of your ass or what? - We play games in Tassie as a part of a deal with the AFL to develop the area (like the Hawks) but somehow this is a reason why we should move to Canberra? You bring up South Melbourne again for no reason with zero context, they were in a world of debt and the choice was move or fold, north on the other hand, isn't in debt. So what's this similarity you keep bringing up? crowd numbers? Size of Geographic area? I'm not even going to ask about 'helping even out the distribution of teams' just laughable and, THE NAME AND THE COLOURS!? I mean come on man.

Canberra is barely above 12 degrees for the next week. No one will go to footy when its that cold. I just can't see that its feasible.
@eddielong86632 ай бұрын
That's more of a reflection on how soft Australians are than anything. Numerous regions of both North America and Europe go through winters that drop a hell of a lot lower than 12 degrees. And professional sports clubs survive there.
@BDub20242 ай бұрын
@@eddielong8663 It was 17 degres yesterday in Perth and was absolutely freezing. Temperature dropped to 12 degrees during the game and rained. It felt like 7 due to strong wind as well. People were amazed that 40k turned up. I guess with Freo being top 4 and Sat night. But the issue is often what people wear. You saw girls wearing crop tops and guys with tshirts. Its those same people that would complain that its too cold to go to footy. Usually if its raining a lot of people don't go to the footy here. Spoilt with too much good weather.

Raiders have there hardcore fans that go in that weather. And Tassie is going to be worse with the same temperature and the wind off the Derwent. I would argue the preference option of the the Fan poll in Darwin will be worst for injuries in the Monsoon conditions

GWS should be the Canberra team, as they lack support in Sydney. GWS could play North Saints and Melbourne home and away... Then Sydney could play North home and away in Canberra. That would give Canberra 8 games per year. At the same time GWS would play 6 games and North would play 4 games. Then see how many people go to games in Canberra as they'd get 8 games. North would have a presence there as would GWS. Fact is that GWS need lots of fans in W Sydney and country NSW/ACT or they'll be a constant drain on the competition. Its critical. Canberra is not fast growing and would struggle to hold a club by itself. That is the role of GWS. If they're smart they'll go straight for West Sydney ACT Giants. Be known as Western Sydney or Giants. Totally remove the stupid GWS name. They're tyring to bring people in West Sydney to the game and they're referred to as GWS.
@BDub20242 ай бұрын
With territories within Melbourne, clubs used to have a zone in which many people would actually barrack for the club. My understanding is that Bulldogs and North were newer clubs in high migrant areas (especially Bulldogs). North were squeezed by the other clubs and the industrial area to my understanding. Many years ago North should have gone north to the fringes of the metro area and grown a strong supporter group there. That's what they should have been doing in the 1960s like Saint Kilda did. Saints have managed to grow a fan base by being more into the bay area as a result. Hawks had the advantage of being east and there being no clubs further out. Of course they also won premierships which helps. North have still the opportunity to give back to the league and really work into a community of non AFL fans and try to bring the people to the game. They get big payouts from AFL so should give back.
@BDub20242 ай бұрын
It would be the Canberroos. If North Melbourne went to be the third perth team... Would it be Joondalup Roos or with Wanneroo being another hub next door therefore become the Wanneroos.
@savgaming82522 ай бұрын

@zaco21_2 ай бұрын
North need to relocate in the next 10-20 years cos their club is going nowhere right now and has been for the last 25 years or so since their successful 90s decade. Yes relocation is hard for supporters to go through but financially speaking it’s the right choice, look at Sydney? they went from a struggling small club In Melbourne to becoming one of the most popular and successful clubs in the AFL just by moving to Sydney. Canberra Kangaroos is a nice fit due to the name being the national animal of our country, plus this gives the Roos a new marketing region in the Riverina and Canberra region who are big on footy over there so having a club represent that area would be good aswell.
@Andy-o2f2 ай бұрын
Genuine question. What would you know about the relocatable demographics of a sporting organisation? Anything?
GWS only play in Canberra when their home ground is unavailable due to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. During this period they could easily play their home games at the SCG. This would allow a team to permanently re-locate to Canberra and this should be the Kangaroos, imho. But this will not happen until the Tasmania Devils are entrenched, which will be 25 years, same as the timeframe the AFL initially set for GWS and GCS. When this time is up there may be an appetite for further expansion. North should move to Canberra and the obvious market for the 20th team will be to have a 3rd team in Sydney,
