My favorite realignment proposal was something I saw in 2001 when realignment was coming, but we didn't know what it would be yet. Animal Kingdom conference: Catfight Division: Lions Jaguars Panthers Bengals Hoofs Division: Broncos Colts Rams Bills Birds of Prey Division: Falcons Cardinals Eagles Ravens Land, Air, and Sea Division: Dolphins Browns Seahawks Bears Human Race Conference: Standing (too) Tall Division: Patriots Saints Titans Giants Working Man Division: Steelers Packers 49ers Chargers Cowboys and Indians Division: Cowboys Texans Redskins Chiefs Inflict Destruction Division: Jets Vikings Buccaneers Raiders

As a British person this is a thousand times better in my eyes and makes so much more sense then whatever method they made up to make the current divisions.

I wonder where the London Jaguars would fit in all this! Haha

Great vid mate! I live in Florida now & this set up would give me loads more opportunities to see Buccs games live! One thing I think is a bad business move however, is putting both NY & LA teams in the same divisions. Better off keeping them separated and selling out more home games in those cities w MASSIVE markets imo.

Some of these make a certain amount of sense (but Pittsburgh is a lot closer, physically and a culturally, to Ohio rather than the East Coast, Pennsylvania is WIDE). The biggest reason for the splits and some of the odds. 1. What you are seeing is the result of merging 2 1/2 leagues and decades of 1-2 expansions every half-decade or so. Same city/different congress has been the rule for a long while (baseball is even more strict on this). Teams have wanted Rivals, but NOT competitors. 2. Teams move cities, this can really mess things up until another re-alignment. 3. Give a team enough history and rivalries start. The AFC North is considered 2nd to NFC North in tradition and rivalries. North and South (and arguably East "Pitt" Ohio in one division, Baltimore is a way down the road, BUT they used to be the old Browns. 4. Conversely, the Florida teams came in 3 different times, and all started in the AFC (Tampa and Seattle swapped leagues after a season or so, Seattle has since jumped back to the NFC, Tampa is still in the NFC). Tampa used to be the odd team out with the 4 teams of the current NFC North, which made little sense, but made for fun comentary when they and Green Bay were both bad (the infamous "Bay of Pigs" series). 5. Everyone likes having Dallas in the division (they draw). Arizona would LOVE to be back in the same division as Dallas, but the big boys of the East (especially Washington, who have a LONG history with them, aren't going to let Dallas slip away).

Prior to realignment in 2002, Arizona was in the NFC east, and Carolina, Atlanta, and New Orleans were in the NFC West. Also Tampa Bay was in the NFC Central (now North). Geography has never really been the priority.

I criticise US sports a lot as a Scot, but the divisions and where they are, even if it sucks from a map pov (I also love geography). But like, imagine if you went from playing your rivals twice a year to possibly once every 4 years. Teams are put together that currently have rivals, and if you were to change it, it would probably screw things up, Though those lot are trying to put teams in Europe and Munich so they might just screw it up themselves.

This is exactly right. When the NFL last realigned in 2002, any proposal that would have Dallas anywhere but the NFC east wasn't even considered. That's because the Cowboys are a nation wide draw, and they have traditional rivalries with the Eagles, Racial Slurs, and Giants. It doesn't matter that it makes no sense geographically.

You gotta keep cincy, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh together: - Steelers afc north - Panthers nfc east - Falcons afc south - Titans nfc south

What if the Raiders suddenly moved back to Oakland? Surely they would have to be in the same division as the 49ers.

NFL divisions are pretty terrible, believe it or not the bucs played in what is now the NFC north until 2002 when it moved to the south. I consider the Saints to be the primary rival for the bucs but it would help all 3 teams if they played each other every year.
