Gorgeous footage! Thank you for this. A Coopers killed one of my chickens yesterday and got trapped in the coop. I got it out and witnessed the incredible grip of its talons, which explains how Coopers easily suffocated their prey before eating

Awesome and nice pics! I once stopped on a country dirt road, looking for snow owls and ended up with 5 short eared instead and when I stepped out of the car, he or she was as stunned as me and the shorty was just about 4 feet away! Had time for a couple of pics then it flew away in the field with the others...but they were quite close and that was my fave short eared owl moment!

it's not too big or heavy...just wish it would focus...so far, after 3 weeks of testing, my keeper rate is so low that it's going back to Canon and if they can't fault it, it's being sold. I have zero need for a lens that doesn't work. My 25 year old 500mm prime, with a 1.4x TC and EF to RF adaptor absolutely smacks the RF200-800 to kingdom come with it comes to AF performance and sharpness. It has been a massive disappointment and great source of frustration for me.
@matthewgehly
@matthewgehly 10 сағат бұрын
That really stinks that the 200-800 is missing focus. It sounds like you got a bad copy. Super frustrating, but it can happen. Honestly, I'm not surprised that a 25 year old EF prime still outperforms this lens. Even used 25 year old 500's are still about 3 times the price of this lens. I'll be interested to hear your opinion once you get the lens back and use it at its peak performance.
@davepastern
@davepastern 9 сағат бұрын
@@matthewgehly yeah, that's what I'm hoping (that it's a bad copy). I have to collate the images from the other day and notate them to prove my points before contacting my contact at Canon CPS. I'm not a CPS member (not a working pro - in Australian, Canon will only give CPS membership to working pros who's income is derived from photography by at least 90%). Canon's consumer support is as useless as the proverbial and CPS have agreed to assist me with any issues. I never expected the RF200-800 to be as sharp as the EF 500mm - if it gets within 90-95% range, then I will still be happy with the lens. It's the focus issues that are making the lens worthless to me. A mark 1 500mm prime is around USD 3k at the moment, and this lens is around 2k, so not really 3x but 1.5x. I suspect you were referring to the mark 2 prime, which is probably close to 3x. My goal was to originally save for a mark 2 EF 600mm prime (selling my mark 1 500mm prime in the process), but that wasn't going to eventuate until ~2029, which is when Canon will stop providing spare parts and supporting the mark 2 super tele primes. So, I decided to get the RF200-800 with my existing savings, and wait until I retire in ~13 years and use my superannuation to buy a RF 600f4 prime. I may have even kept the 500mm prime and not sold it, given it is consistently dropping in price. Now this problematic RF 200-800 scuppers most of my intentions sadly and is causing me a great deal of frustration and anxiety, something that I don't need in my life for health reasons.

As a photographer, I am always trying to make lemonade out of lemons. It's nice when things come together. You're hunting a huge area with a lot of fence posts. A lot of space to cover. One area I go to has two fields across the road from each other. So the seo's will fly in a loop around me while they fly back and forth. I sit so I can look down the fence line. Sooner or later they'll land on a post. SEO's are fun to photograph because they come back. Great horned just seem to leave. Find them and they leave again. Maybe the best place for you would be a place where the sun is on your passenger side? With some fence posts within reasonable range. I get my best photos in a place like that. Positioning is poor at a couple other locations I go to. The owls are there but the photos just won't be as good for me. Congratulations on the photos you did get.

Really appreciate your great tips! It was probably difficult to tell in the video, but the fence line scenario is pretty much as you described. Crazy thing is that I’ve had very little luck there, it wasn’t until I was in an adjacent field walking the fence line that I really had success. If it was easy the images wouldn’t be as special. 😁

I'm so pumped for you! As someone who's done exactly what you did in this video for years, I can emphasize with the frustration. On a tip from a FB group, I took about an hours drive out to a spot two weeks ago. I was told Northern Harriers and Short Ear Owls are in this spot regularly. Sure enough, I spotted 5-6 Northern Harriers & 2 Short Ear Owls. Unfortunately, there was heat haze and they were all pretty far out. All I left with was a blurry ID shot. Outstanding photos, hoping my luck takes the turn yours did!

Thanks so much for your kind words! Wildlife photography is such a rollercoaster. I'm sure you saw the heat haze in the flight and fence clips. Best of luck as you continue the quest!

The exact results I thought, I almost always like to shoot alone. It not only gives you time to spend quietly in nature and enjoy yourself and I always have found that most people don't have the patience that I do when waiting for wildlife. When shooting large animals I usually like to have someone with me as long as I can outrun them. Thanks for a great poll.

Why would you need a new CFEx card with the mkII? One thing you didn’t mention is that the battery drain appears to be much higher than with the mkI. a week ago I had to swap batteries twice on the mkII while the mkI was still happy on the first battery (these are all LP-6NH which have plenty of life left, and I am not going to use LP-6P for now; which means no wireless connectivity for now, for me). Considering inflation, the mkII itself is less expensive than the mkI (and sale price makes it even better); I wasn’t going to upgrade to the mkII, but what convinced me is how well the EC-AF works (after trying it on a buddy’s R1); that and the Christmas sale price 😂. I am not intending to sell my mkI at this time, though. The EC-AF might take some getting used to, but first impression is it feels extremely precise.
@matthewgehly

I ended up buying the Mark II, but I needed a new CF Express card because I kept my Mark I. The Mark II sure does seem to drain batteries a lot quicker than the Mark I...I've been experimenting with different power settings to help.

Most of my time out is spent alone, but part of that is just not having anyone to get out there with. I can really go either way on it. Several years ago we had a small group that would get together to shoot occasionally - not for wildlife though - but time and life have taken their toll. Often when I'm out alone I use the time for prayer as I'm walking and just reflecting on the magnificence of the creation that we get to be a part of. There is just something about being in nature that draws me closer to God. Sure, with the right people we can have some great conversations, so either is good.

I upgraded from the 600 f11 to the 200-800. 1.5 stops more light, which is like going from iso 3200 to 1100 or triple the light intake. It also can focus down to 2.6 feet at 200mm for up-close organisms (and with a 0.25x magnification) compared to the over 14-foot mfd of the 600 f11. Also, I can ensure the bird stays in the frame when taking videos by zooming out. I've noticed that the weight of the lens is not as front-heavy as the sigma 150-600 C lens that I used to own, so I can hand-hold for longer periods than I was anticipating lol.

As you stated if you initiate focus via Whole Area AF the camera will use the algorithm within the entire frame to find an eye, head, subject in that order, however if there is a closer contrast point OR the algorithm cannot find the eye, head, subject in all the competing mess it frequently grabs something else. However, did you know you can set it up to INITIALY look in the selected AF Zone first and then auto transition to Whole Area AF after locking the eye, head, subject? This allows full frame tracking instead of being limited to just tracking within the selected AF Area. This is particularly useful to adjust composition while locked or to track moving subjects in the whole area. It's further possible to program a button to turn this feature on/off very easy via the M-fn button when the AF just can't handle the distractions. This gives maximum control of the AF system for literally all wildlife scenarios.

I noticed that you switched from the R7 800 to the R5 100-500 when the eagle took off. Any particular reason why? I shoot eagles with a R7 800 and can't get them in the frame or focused when they do come in the frame. Have you ever shot eagles in flight with the R7 800?
@matthewgehly
@matthewgehly Ай бұрын
I’m much better at following the subject when I have the ability to zoom out and find it in the frame then zoom back in. The 100-500 allows that option. The 200-800 (not in the video) is a great option to get the reach, but also be able to zoom out and zoom in to find the subject. The other reason is that the R5 and 100-500 is a much better setup that produces a better image. I was hoping for a wall hanger…that I obviously didn’t get! 😂 Thanks so much for watching! 👍🦅📷
