Amazing video, although I wish there was a video of the va-36 roadrunners aboard the Saratoga. Their time on the Saratoga is sentimental to me

Hi Tom, Thanks for the memory. I was fortunate to serve the Blue Tail Flies (VA 153) 1971 - 1973 as an AMH aboard CVA 34 Oriskany. We had just transitioned from A4's to A7's when I caught up with them at Lemoore. RIP all who were lost🇺🇸

@PeterStanley-hb6nu Well, your dad was like a hero to me. Our pilots would strap in those little A-4 Skyhawks and get shot off the pointy end every day to my utter amazement. Never got tired of it. I hope your dad is still living with good health and I salute him.

Memories of a sad time. I was the VA-163 Air Intelligence Officer on the 65 Vietnam cruise. We were a close knit group of men and we took each loss very hard. Our squadron were some of the bravest men I ever knew. They knew each mission over North Vietnam could mean they might not return, but they went anyway. Thank you John Shore for the videos.

@@mikew2267 Sorry, did not know LT Rosenberger during my tour. Could be he was in a different squadron or perhaps CAG Staff. Knew all of the VA-55 pilots as I was a Ready Room sound-powered phone talker during flight quarters.

Same thing happened to one of our VMA-214 Det N A4's on USS Hornet CVS-12 during our Far East cruise. I was #2 in the pattern following #1 (Captain Hale) just after the ship had passed through a rainstorm. Deck was slippery(wooden) and after he had trapped the ship rolled to port and he started sliding to the deck edge and went over the catwalk where he got hung up nose down. I watched this happen (to me, in slow motion) as Iwas on final for my trap. As I flew over from my wave off, I glanced down and saw he was still in the cockpit. I was bingo'd over to the Midway which was operating with us at that time. I learned after that he had been pulled out ok. After a short while I was recovered back on the Hornet uneventually except for a brief instant where I contemplated ejecting from the steam cat on the Midway. Hornet had a hydraulic catapult whereas the Midway had a steam cap-a much softer shot than a hydraulic cat. Halfway down the cat track I was reaching for the ejection handle as I felt i had a cold cat launch. I glanced at my airspeed indicator and saw that the airspeed was accelerating normally so I held off ejecting until that cat shot was complete and I had flying speed. Changed my skivvies after my trap back aboard the Hornet. Just another day of Naval aviation....

I can say the USS Shangri la was a good ship to serve on. I was fortunate to serve on her for 11 months. Went to Bremerton, Wash. in drydock wow what a site it is to see an aircraft carrier with no water under her. I also rode her around the horn of South America. We stopped in Peru, Chile, and Brazil before we ended up in Mayport, Florida. On April 9th when we were going around the horn the waves were 30 to 40 feet high we had no trouble.
Marine pilots are the best for close air support. Thanks for saving my ass in 1968 and 1969.

Yes! Named when FDR was asked where did the Doolittle raid originate from, at a time when the US was pushed out of its Asia possessions. The raid forced Japan to consolidate the outright ring defense resulting in the naval battles of Coral Sea and Midway.
