Awesome! Do you have a game plan on how to do that? What's your next move?

I don't like overly-sharp footage such as in the 1/6000 shutter speed clip. It gives off that cheap home video look as if it was taken with a cellphone camera that set the shutter speed on auto, or applied with too much sharpening. I want my footage to look cinematic, like in a movie. The reason why the footage with ND filters look fuzzy is because of the tiny amount of motion blur happening in the frame -- that's exactly what it's meant to do. This fuzziness is part of what gives footage that 'movie' look. I'd rather stick to the 180-degree rule and have that natural motion blur fuzziness than a cheap-looking footage with overly-crisp frames.
@JonathanRicheyКүн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective! I typically try and stick to the 180 degree rule as well but with drones it can be a bit challenging. It would be awesome if DJI would come out with a drone that includes a built-in variable ND-filter, sort of like how Sony did with the FX6. You could set it to 'auto' mode and let the drone adjust the intensity of the filter based on your aperture and shutter speed.
@skycam5092 күн бұрын
How about going on the high side with the ND filter and setting the ISO to auto? Thanks for the video.
@JonathanRicheyКүн бұрын
That could work too, especially in bright conditions. My concern is the sensor could introduce unwanted noise because of the boosted ISO, BUT that sounds like a great idea to test out in a future video. Thanks again for the suggestion!

Three more to add. -You Tuber: This guy! -You Tuber: Joe Tegmar and Zandler (+ others) have channels and fly and upload Tesla factory-build construction progress reports. Joe does this nearly daily and has many subscribers. -Here in CA fire zones the local power company SCE sends out drone teams to inspect power lines. Not just the big towers but also the wood phone pole's lines, insulators, and transformers. Wind damage causes weak components and these residential and forrest lines have been the cause of many wildfires so they want to stay on top of their liability.
@ericswenson74682 күн бұрын
Also to report when it's time to send out tree crews to hack branches away from lines.

@JonathanRicheyКүн бұрын
Sorry, I can't answer that because I didn't do any payload testing with it. However the manufacturer's website claims the max transmission distance is 6km, so 300m shouldn't be a problem.

I think you're completely missing the point of why filmmakers use ND filters. Unless you have the need to maintain consistent shutter speeds/aperture on your footage you are probably right but they have their place.

ND filters quality also needs consideration...
@JonathanRicheyКүн бұрын
Good point! Some ND filters are better than others and a low quality filter can introduce color shifting, noise, vignetting, etc. Maybe I'll try the experiment again with different filters and see if the results are better.

Great study. I also did a study. I tried the DJI mini 4K with the same scene at 8 am, noon and 4 pm. Then I took still photos with no filter, ND 8, 16, 32 and 64. Judging by the exposure meter which makes zebra lines for over exposure, here are my results: At 8 am the ND 16 showed the deep blue sky the way my eyes saw it. At noon, the ND 64 looked the best. And at 4 pm golden glow sun, the ND 32 looked the best. I don't do photography on cloudy days. And I use the blue of the sky as my guide to the best exposure. I agree that a sharp video looks better than a blurred one. I will have to try higher shutter speeds. Thanks Jonathan...

Considering doing some drone work after I retire, probably 4 years from now. Would you recommend getting the Part 107 license as the first step or would you go another route? This would be a part time job at best but I would be charging for my work so a license is a big step in the process.

Such a great video I did all three I am new I got the DJI mini 4k fly more bundle. I am really hoping I can make something happen. I DO ENJOY tinkering with tech. So, I am sure I could get used to being active always moving. Making money while essentially playing a IRL video game. I WANT INS! I am lookin for some residual income, or income on the side. I am broke right now barely getting by with 40hr a week hard labor job is destroying my body. DOESNT HELP, I am making a pathetic amount of money. If I didnt have good family I would 1,000% be a homeless wreck. I wanna find something I can do on my own merit just like this. I am VERY tech savy, always have been. I also have a PC at home that is PLENTY capable of editing anything that would need to be done in order to make my presence online stick out. Just need to know the correct path to follow due to their always being another scam video talking about wanna be a millionair in 6 months. Like for god sakes I JUST WANNA LIVE LIFE NOT WORRYING IF I HAVE A HOME OR NOT, I am not a hard person to please. I truly just want what I am worth thats it. No more NO less. FanTASTIC VIDEO! I look forward to hopefully giving you some great news eventually.

Is there any way to change 4000x3000 pixels to 16:9 in that software? I would think being able to start with that much resolution, that you'd be able to chop out 1920x1080 from your video and have some flexibility in your shooting. Unfortunately my drone's sensor is not cinematic in nature and I'm wondering if the output can be made cinematic through software?
