Just found this, thanks for posting it up. Those were the days, you never appreciate just how good they were until they're just a distant memory. I gotta say its lovely seeing some faces I really miss and aren't with us anymore, Crezzie, Super Dave, Mike Holland and Hayd to name a few. A special thanks to Bruce's mum for letting us idiots behave like a bunch of hooligans on her land. I can't think why I had to rebuild my back wheel the week after and had forgotten about the crazy hill climb! Quick edit to say, wasn't this the Rock Ape when Keith T boned Bruce's Z500. Crezzie and I didn't join the road shenanigans as we were in no fit state to find our bikes never mindcride them 😄 Definitely more please if you have the time.

30 years as a Millwright, but only 1 CycleKart race. Your Circlip will Not hold your wheel on. There's a significant amount of side load on the rear axle in corners. I've seen video of wheels folded over when people got too aggressive on rough tracks. I recommend a washer and cotter pin, or a castle nut if you have the ability to thread your shaft. Something else to keep in mind is being able to remove tire/wheel combo at the track in a hurry. Loving your build so far.
@Oldguydosestuff2 ай бұрын
The circlip is something that has been on my mind since I went that way to secure the wheels on I’ve been considering drilling and a large split pin as well But it’s looking more likely to have both hubs clamped to the axle as both driving wheels

Not sure what advantage you will get by removing the entire governor mechanism rather than just removing the arm from the governor shaft to the throttle?

I’m not sure either, but once detached internal parts might rotate enough to hit the crank or arm disconnect from governor allowing end cap and washer to drop into engine Just seems safer out as it’s not needed

Everyone was of the same mind that my engine with that carb and exhaust should have pulled more revs I’ve now removed the governor and awaiting throttle linkage parts to test run it 10hp from a 200cc engine isn’t a big ask, I’m sure they could be tuned way beyond that with quite simple tricks But nothing on the day was that far ahead it drew attention, it wasn’t so much power I was lacking but revs for speed, so I suspect my governor is particularly aggressive 🤷♂️ Their was talk about a handicap system to make a fairer playing field for all, potentially based on engine mods (early days) Boys will be boys and always look for an advantage, that’s racing, that’s also what keeps cyclekarts costs down and fun levels up The more new people join the more I see questions about more power, gearboxes and better brakes. In the future it’ll be a real challenge controlling all that At the end of the day their are Motorsport clubs for those type of no holes bared race cars and maybe that’s where some people would be happier (I’ve been there done that) Interesting times ahead
@PhaetonMuddybuggies2 ай бұрын
@@Oldguydosestuff I totally agree on the control side, in racing it's the nature of the beast (sadly), but without going to sealed engines it's going to be difficult to control unless there can be a portable dyno at each event which would add expensive & effort. Hopefully the few won't spoil it for the many
@Yosser702 ай бұрын
You are probably right about it being down to the governor but you are also right about some people will do more to their engines than others. These 212 engines stock shout pull around 6-7hp but the clone ones, probably more like 5-6. Getting one up to 10hp isn’t difficult but not exactly that cheap either. You need billet internals and fly wheel and a hot cam, for which you are looking at over £200. The problem will be that there’s no way to actually check the horsepower, so someone could aim for 10hp but over shoot and get say 12, and that’s nearly double the power over stock. You can that these engines a long way, seen 20+hp out of them but it gets obvious at that point lol Glad you enjoyed it mate and hopefully I’ll get mine done and join you at a meeting.
@Oldguydosestuff2 ай бұрын
@@Yosser70mines fine now without the governor, it can rev freely and slides sideways everywhere on grass, that’s all the power I need, I think
@Oldguydosestuff2 ай бұрын
@@PhaetonMuddybuggies most tuneups are easy to spot with know results revs could easily be checked with drive wheels lifted That’s where the bhp is (double the revs = double the bhp) that would require billet parts inside to stop it exploding So carb bore and max rpm would control most power mods and easily checked

Somehow having the engine all the way to the back, fed with a motorcycle carb and a foam filter poking out and a cvt when the whole machine looks like it's from the 20's feels wrong. i'm a sucker for front engine rear drive. these things werent exactly efficient or well balanced back then and the engine needs cool air anyway. i understand all the work that went into this tho. built my own things out of stock... and i have an engine, 125cc 4 spd off my former motorycle, waiting for me to get the space to build my own. there's no space for something that big anywhere i could house something. your frame looks like you could run the axle above the frame and suspend it with links and a simple swingarm to keep the pillow blocks lined up. setup with quarter elliptic springs or a transverse leaf, you'd be free to chop off a fair bit of metal up front too. trailing links to the front axle will keep it from shifting, and allow you to adjust the caster angle. That's how they did it, back then. These kind of cars ran a heck of a lot of caster, it helped reducing road kickback in the wheel with the steering box or cable they ran.
@Oldguydosestuff3 ай бұрын
Yes I know exactly what you mean We’ve probably all chased ultimate performance in the past at great cost and time, only to eventually realize you have much more fun in something far cheaper and simpler you’d probably started out with Over time we lose something with the obsession for power and speed But it’s built to rules No gears 10hp max C90 Honda wheels Go cart parts Track width limit 1m Wheel base and weight limits The whole idea of cyclekarts is to keep costs down as much as possible while making them fun to drive and each kart being of similar rubbish performance to the rest of the field A lot of things you suggest are quite possible to incorporate into a cyclekart, but I went for the simple build is best for my first attempt to see how I like it This cart has cost me less than a headlight or clutch on most modern cars or less than a weekends racing in most Motorsport events That’s were the simple beauty and fun of these karts is If cyclekarts had 550bhp V8 motors and AP brakes they’d stop being a laugh and be very serious Get out there and build one and join in the fun 👍😎

Coming on well! The hesitation on revving... First check is the paper gasket if used on the air filter side of the carb. With adapter kits, it is better to use the thicker rubber type spacer gaskets as the paper ones are prone to slip and cover the hole for the primary jet to some degree causing this symptom. If that is not it it is probably your primary jet that is too small as this is active until about 1/3 throttle.
@Oldguydosestuff3 ай бұрын
I’ve upped the jet and cured the issue 👍 I did notice the paper gasket was likely to slip so I think I held it inline as I tightened it up, but might swap the gasket anyway now after your advice Thank you 👍
