Great video, ive been into bfs for a year or so and its so much fun. My only gripe with building BFS rods is handle component's. Its a pain to find rear grips that have a small enough ID and isnt to long length wise...

Interesting video I never knew this BFS was a thing. I’ve fish this way for years and always got weird looks when asked what I was using for gear. I’ve caught 26-30” Northern on a 7’ ultralight with 4 lbs line.

Right? My father in law and I used to do this with Lucky Craft Sammy 65s for spotted bass on Lake Ouachita. Didn’t know it was BFS…just thought it was ultralight bait casting!

Good Morning, Did you make the carbon grips, or do you have a vendor that sells them? I am building a few of these, and I am literally weighing my options. Blanks and reels on the way.
@masteringrodbuilding7 күн бұрын
So I built my own custom carbon fiber grips since there were no one-piece carbon grips available in the 5.5" to 6.5" length I personally favor. So if you can make grips it's a great option. We do not have them as an in stock catalog item YET, but we will. ETA is still TBD, but they are coming from Fuji and will be made to fit both the TCH FBCS13-11 and the new TCH size 13 skeleton trigger seats. That will be the lightest, strongest option ever offered.
@Piratescottscustomrods6 күн бұрын
@@masteringrodbuilding You are correct, no one offers a small full sized grip. I am in the process of ordering material and doing some research so I will be able to make my own. This will also give me the opportunity to try some different shapes as well as lengths. I need to find the RodMaker issue that showed the process. Thank you for all of your help.

It will work for sure. Make sure you prep/degloss both surfaces. I would recommend dry powdered pigment (vs. liquid paint) to tint. Test a batch or two to get your color right and it should work great. Let us know how you make out!

I bought a north fork bfs blank and then turned it back into a spinning rod, lol. I had an exo handle from them that I needed to use. I’ve started using really fine stainless steel mesh for my arbors. I don’t know if they help sensitivity but every rod I’ve made so far seems to be better in that regard. That north fork rod almost rings like a bell when I tap the handle, it has a very distinct metal sound to it.
@masteringrodbuilding13 күн бұрын
That's really interesting...like screen mesh?
@dwalsh1819 күн бұрын
Thank you for the video. I am very interested in the BFS area. I fish inshore for reds, snook, and speckled trout. Why do you use such a short blank? Doesn't that shorten your casts? I am thinking about building a finesse baitcaster for inshore.
@masteringrodbuilding19 күн бұрын
Give it a try...it will WORK. I started casting off my dock (saltwater canal) with BFS gear just to test cast gear and try different set ups. I was SHOCKED by what I started catching. If I hook a real red I'm cooked but so far it has been surprising...and it works GREAT for trout and flounder. Just have the net ready! It's hard to describe but the casting stroke is very different on this gear. You can't overhead power cast without overwhelming the reel. But I am pushing the limits of light lures on this gear and accuracy is more important to me than distance. You can absolutely build them longer...even 7' or 7'3" or whatever you want. Go with your gut. To be clear, 90% of everything else I fish is 6'9" - 7'3" so I am not short rod enthusiast or anything...it is just what has worked for me.

Bill have had good luck with 0-2 power crank bait or popping blanks. Also some or the newer glass or glass tips. I mainly do inshore salt. Diawa jdm reels.
@masteringrodbuilding19 күн бұрын
I agree...Daiwa even has a new Saltist BFS Air TW in Japan - just brought two back but haven't had a chance to use them. Yes - crank bait and popping blanks work great. My favorite glass so far is NFC APFG 701 trimmed down from the butt. Shane Gray at Gray Wolf Custom Rods makes a killer 3-piece hybrid blank where the tip is all glass. I LOVE it but it's only available in a shorter 5'6" length right now. What are you favoring for line/leader? Any recommendations there?
@ArthriticAngler19 күн бұрын
@ lol, agree completely on the APFG 701. Have even caught a 24” red on it. I also fish the 702 (701?)crank or 700/702 popping. For factory the baby mojo bass crankbait and even Falcon Ultimate trout have been okay. Kyong Aging for freshwater trout. I don’t go under 3.5 grams for inshore often. TRD baby crawz and 1/32-1/8 jighead. I struggle with the 1/16-1/8 hair jigs…. Line wise, 832 or SSv2 10lb. If trout fishing I have one of the varivas pe .6 or .8. The distance does increase, especially if you are trying 2 grams and under. I’m old and that is less enjoyable, so 10lb is my sweet spot. I noticed there are a number of newer 10lb class braids on the market, but I haven’t tried them. I have the graywolf 2 piece hybrid that I haven’t wrapped yet…. Too many projects. Diawa Zillion with a spare spool from Bait Finessee……. Trick has always been finding the light tip with junk in the trunk. A lighter version in NFC Neo series would be sweet. The hybrids blanks coming out have great potential. It is a fun journey!

Bill, thanks for the great informative video. Do you have a blank manufacturer and model you recommend for say a 5'9 or 5'11" also have you done a spinning set up or just casting...thanks!
@masteringrodbuilding19 күн бұрын
So many good blanks out there. My personal favorite carbon fiber blanks right now are the NFC P700-1 Xray LMX trimmed to length for one piece and Shane Gray at Gray Wolf Custom rods 511C-3 for a multi-piece. RodGeeks C466LF a very close second place...and there are others. If you favor glass the Gray Wolf 3-piece Hybrid is awesome and the NFC APFG742-1 trimmed is also great. I have tried both spinning and casting...for me casting offers way more accuracy and torque/power (along with WAY less line twist) than spinning. But build whatever you are comfortable with...the fish don't care.

Lots of stuff will work well...my favorite blanks are Gray Wolf Rods 511C and the NFC P 700-1(X-Ray LMX) trimmed to either 5'11" or 5'9". The very best reels - to me - are the Shimano Calcutta Conquest BFS and the Daiwa Silver Creek Air TW Custom. Both of those are JDM only...the Bates Hundo LTS 100 and the Ark Gravity BFS are excellent and available here in the states. I hope this helps!

I got to laugh at this because 50 years ago me and my pops started fishing and used old bamboo fishing poles with chrome steel guides with cork grips back in the 70s and they had to have been 30 plus years old already got them at a second hand store,we caught 100s of albacore, tuna, yellowtail etc with out ever having any failure. Still have them hanging on the wall retired for historical memories. We liked fishing and eventually moved on to modern poles some with rollers and still no issues.

Hello.thanks Please : With this technique You must used the braid with core or You can olso use the hollow core braid? And What is the diameter of the braid in this vidéo 1 .5 MM..!? Thanks
@masteringrodbuilding2 ай бұрын
You can use whatever braid you prefer...just be aware that different braids will react differently. Hollow core braid is limper than braid with a fluoro cord for example. Doesn't make it better or worse...just different. Sometimes with some jigs that swim a lot hollowcore is too limp and supple and your jig will tangle. So choose a braid that works well for you in your application. This stuff is about 1.3mm...but strength and abrasion resistance is more important - to me - than just diameter. Hope this helps...good luck!

I really enjoy the informative video you are doing. I am looking at them a couple years after you created them but I am getting a lot of help out of them. You do a good job explaining the details. I have been doing this about a year and have finished about 5 rods I am completely happy with. I seem to strip down and redo more than going good from start to finish. I have decided to just master basic rods before I tackle the harder stuff. I wish I knew you were in Birmingham. I spent a a year and a half 30 minutes from Birmingham and would have loved to visit your shop and pic your brain. Do you have any videos on how to get a good smooth and filled finish on a diamond pattern butt wrap? I have had to go extra heavy then sand it down to smooth then put a final coat to fill the sanding marks.
@masteringrodbuildingАй бұрын
Hello Frank - thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback! On your filled in diamond pattern butt wraps that is the only way I know to get it completely level - apply lots of coats and sand it down to level. That said, I don't personally mind a smooth, even coat of finish that follows the hills and valleys of the wrap. I realize that drives some people crazy but it is always the second option.
