A not so short video - upon request - that shows how I do single inlaid turns and single wrap trim bands. In this video, I use some high contrast Fuji threads to demonstrate how to:
Wrap an inlaid turn 5 wraps into a guide wrap
Wrap a single inlaid turn in the center of a guide wrap, and
Wrap a single inlaid turn at either end of a guide wrap
The threads used in this video are Fuji UltraPoly NOCP Size A in colors 020-Candy Apple Red and 002-White. The guides I wrap are Fuji FBCKLAG10H and CCKLAG10H guides. Both the Fuji thread and Fuji guides can be found anywhere Fuji products are sold including:
The Rod Room - www.therodroom.com
Bingham Enterprises - www.angelfire.com/ks/bingham/
Mudhole Custom Tackle - www.mudhole.com
Get Bit Outdoors - www.getbitoutdoors.com
Angler's Workshop - www.lurepartsonline.com
Jann's Netcraft - www.jannsnetcraft.com
The flex coat guide foot adhesive I use can be purchased at any of those places or found here: flexcoat.com/shop/finishes-an...

Very good. I really appreciate just enough elaboration to cover the objective. You're an excellent instructor. I'm 61 yrs old and just now getting started w/the rod building. I like how you DON'T take it for granted that everyone has been doing this for several years. I'm going to go back and see some of your earlier vids to get a different perspective on some of the beginner steps. Thank you once again.

Bill, thank you. I’m an older retired Navy Corpsman that never had a hobby. I live in very SE Georgia on the Georgia-Florida line and tend to fish the intercostal waters of St Mary’s River/Cumberland Island. I bought some blanks and gear from Mudhole and plan on building rods. You have made all of this understandable. Again thank you.

Great tutorial. I appreciate all of your examples of single trim band placement being in one video. Your concise explanations, coupled with clear visuals, will make practicing these techniques much more enjoyable. I just finished an underwrap that has five single black trim wraps - one at either end and three in the center where I placed the hook keeper. I just learned two things from watching your video that I wish I’d done on my project. 1) I should have finished the underwrap with a couple thin coats before wrapping the hook keeper. I used size A metallic and I was getting a little pull through with the top layer into the under layer. Next time! 2) I used a different technique for my single trim wraps. I like your methods much better. They look nicer and seem much simpler to accomplish (though I’ve not tried it for myself yet). I will give them a go on my practice blank before I continue to the guides on my current project (my wife’s birthday present). Thanks again for a superb instructional video. @masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! So, I am using Flex Coat guide foot adhesive to attach the guides prior to wrapping. I've been using this for 20+ years. It works for all guides from rollers down to size 2 micros - great stuff. And YES - you can absolutely move the guide around for guide alignment purposes after it's wrapped. The adhesive stays on the bottom of the guide foot like a cushion. I honestly don't know why you'd ever use bands, zip ties, mono loops, tape...heck anything this else. This stuff is magic and one stick lasts like 20 years. You can find it here or wherever Flex Coat products are sold: flexcoat.com/shop/finishes-and-adhesives/guide-foot-adhesive

Great instructional video. You are a good teacher and I appreciate the knowledge, I am just doing some research on whether or not to rewrap 6 of my saltwater rods so they all match. Question: what rod wrapping machine do you use? Or what would you recommend for a beginner. I am a fairly skilled woodworker so I hope that may help.
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching - I appreciate the feedback. Please like and subscribe! I personally use a modified Renzetti Master Rod Lathe. The Renzetti is by far the best IMO...I should confess that I developed that opinion by buying and then replacing virtually every machine out there. If you are serious about the hobby, I'd recommend getting the Renzetti. Better to buy once, cry once. And in the very slight chance you are not delighted: there's a reason you never see them for sale used. You can easily sell it if it comes to that (but I'm not aware of that happening...even once). If you are a skilled woodworker you might also consider building your own. A couple things to consider if you go that route. To me, you need the capability to run at least three colors of thread at once, the ability to apply tension to the thread spool (not the thread itself), and the ability to back up slightly/reverse a little under tension. I prefer the thread coming from over and behind the rod (like a Renzetti) but that is personal preference. The ability to wrap a one-piece rod 8' long is really nice as well but may not be required. I also don't power wrap even though I have that capability with the Renzetti...definitely something most can live without. Don't want to give you mixed messages but a lot of guys enjoy making their own wrappers...you might fall into that category. Hope this helps!

Nice. Video. Keep them coming. Do you use a thread for all your guides, on the under wraps and over wraps?
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
So I use size A almost exclusively. I will occasionally use size D for the underwraps on heavy duty offshore and surf rods...or to complete a repair if the original rod was wrapped in D . But for everything else I use A. It takes longer but it looks much better to my eye (it's kind of High Definition compared to D) and is actually stronger since you get so many more turns of thread on a guide. Hope this helps.

@@coloradodirtbike5930 Yes there is a way - watch my video 'Invisible Guide Wraps and Tagless Trim Bands - Fiberglass Special'. Full disclosure this technique is more difficult to get clean...and you will have to do at least three turns - but it works very well.

@@masteringrodbuilding thanks a lot. I been watching rod building videos, and started my first rod build four days ago. I got everything finishing so far except the final finish. Should I do multiple layers of finish (light coat and let it dry, then apply another?). And if I do multiple coats of finish, should i use the alcohol burner in between coats to get rid of any bubbles, and would you wet sand the first coat before applying another coat?
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
@@coloradodirtbike5930 so this is really worthy of a whole other video (which is in the works) but generally do the first coat of finish and make sure it is very light. I apply the first coat to the thread wraps only and rotate by hand for a while and then remove all the excess that will sag and drip off leaving a very light, saturated coat. If you still have bubbles at that point very quick, very gentle heat from a distance will remove bubbles...alcohol torch or lighter is fine. Once that coat sets, go back and trim any fuzzies with a sharp clean razor blade and apply your second coat. On this coat I go off the edge of the wraps and onto the blank on both ends of the wrap. Again, completely coat the wraps but then let all excess sag and remove it. In most cases this is all you need for guide wraps...another coat (or two) is typically required for butt wraps. Yes you can sand but I only sand if my butt wraps and really wavy/lumpy after several coats. Sand along the axis of the blank by hand using a hard backing object (scrap piece of wood or plastic is fine)...do NOT just sand by rotating the rod. I start with 220 grit and work down through 600 grit...finish with grey Scotchbrite. Once the finish is level (you have sanded off the high spots) apply a final, very light coat of finish. Hope this helps.

I tried your way of looping the thread end under the wrap right through, but everytime I tried it trimmed it a fray would remain out side (a real pain). I'll stick to my way trimming the thread end short then pull it through so the end.. ends up hidden.. I think .I've done your idea of doing single inlays probably 25 yrs ago, it's a good method. Providing you're using the same size threads.
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! Yep - nothing I'm doing here is new (or my idea). And like I always say - there is more than one way to do everything. The most important thing is finding a technique that works for YOU. If you are happy then don't change anything! It's a really good point about the size of threads. This single inlay needs to be done with the same size threads or the inlay thread needs to be smaller than the main thread. Using a larger thread for the inlay doesn't work well. Great point!

@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Paul. I personally always finish the under wraps first - usually two light coats - before I wrap the guides. I also often do one wrap of the guides, finish that, then do the second wrap over the guides. I use size on all but the biggest surf and trolling rods. And then it's not because A is not strong enough - just to hard to wrap such large guides.

And what I have found with the Flex Coat sticks (vs. generic hot melt sticks I have tried) is that the glue sticks to the guide foot - not the blank - when you reposition them. Although if you get good at putting them on often no adjustment is necessary. Hope this helps - let me know if you have questions!

Can the flex coat rod guide adhesive be used on top of an under wrap thread? On my double-footed guides for a 13’ surf rod, I’m planning to underwrap first. Then I would like to use the guide foot adhesive to temporarily hold my guide in place on top of the underwrap. Will this disturb the finish absorbing under the foot? (Of course I can go try a test first, but you might have already figured this out. I enjoy your videos a lot. You are my “GoTo” reference for rod building.

Thanks for watching...please like and subscribe! The process you are describing is EXACTLY what I do on heavy surf rods or trolling rods or land-based shark rods. Any rod with an underwrap, I layout, wrap and finish the underwraps first. I typically do two very thin coats on teh underwraps. I then go back a few days later (depending on which finish it is - Flex Coat is suitably hard in 24 hours...I like to give Gen4 about 48 hours (this is all at 75 degrees) - and wrap my guides on. When I place the guides before wrapping them, I stick them in place with the Flex Coat Guide Foot Adhesive. It does NOT disturb the finish getting under the foot and into the guide foot tunnel along the side of the guide feet. Sometimes really big guides don't want to stick...or they fall off...like with big Roller guides or size 50s. And in that case I coat the bottom of the guide foot with FC Guide Foot Adhesive, stick the guide in place, and then tape one side down. In this case I am really only using the guide foot adhesive as a 'cushion'. But tearing guides off after years of hard use both with and without the guide foot adhesive has taught me that it makes a big difference. I hope this helps...reach out with questions. Good luck!

Okay, where did you acquire your metal burnishing tool? I’m ‘bout fed up with the yellow menagerie! Thanks. BTW, after watching one of your videos (forget which) that showed placing guides on the blank with guide glue I thought I’d give it a try. My hands are too big and too shaky to keep torturing myself with Smurf masking tape or rubber bands! I’m now 9 guides into this new (for me) method, and I’m sold. Another question: will the guides break loose easy enough when I go back and make any adjustments before finishing? Any tips to avoid potential pitfalls? Thanks!
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
I got my burnishing tools from Dale Clemens Custom Tackle in about 1995 or 1996. The good news is that Billy Vivona and the NERBS are selling them now. Highly recommended and found here: www.northeastrodbuilders.com/stuff-to-buy/thread-packing-tool/ I have to confess...I have no idea why the guide foot adhesive has never caught on. It is such a better mousetrap...fast, easy, and cheap. Glad it is working for you. To answer your question YES - it breaks free and lets you slide guides around for final straightening and alignment. However, because of the way you apply it to the guide foot it sticks to the guide not the blank. So even after you move/reposition the guides you have a nice cushion on the bottom of the foot. The only time I use anything else is on super heavy duty guides or roller guides. And on those I still apply the adhesive to the foot...I just also tape the guides down so they don't fall off under their own weight. The only tips I can offer are to put the guide foot beside the base of the flame rather than in the flame or above it. This way you never get any black soot on the guide foot. And just swipe the foot across the end of the stick and place it immediately on the blank. Hold it there a second and voila you are done. Why in the world people would use tape or bands or ligatures or super glue is beyond me.
@slyflea
@slyflea 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, perfect! I’ll go check out the link and get one ordered. Thank you. I finally affixed the last guide on the rod I’m building for my wife. On each of them I held the guide next to the flame (as you demonstrated in a video), even though I use an alcohol lamp. Figure better safe than sorry. Anyhow, I’m a convert to using guide adhesive. Also, it makes logical sense to me to have that adhesive cushion between the guide and blank. Great tip on heavier guides - adhesive and tape. I’ve not ventured into that arena yet, but will hopefully remember the approach if I do. This is only my fifth rod I’ve built, so my place on the learning curve is best described as the vertex of a very steep parabola. But I’m happy to say that I have incorporated a number of techniques you describe in your videos to my current project, to wit: guide adhesive, single trim band at start of wrap, single inlay mid-way in wrap, behind the guide wrap, continual packing of thread (size A), and guide foot prep (I use an 800-grit sanding/polishing belt on my knife sharpener rather than a wheel). So, thank you for sharing your knowledge! Maybe you could do a tutorial on your coating methods...? Thanks again! Be safe.

@@slyflea so glad the video was helpful. I can honestly say you're the first person to use the vertex of a steep parabola for context...you get 10 bonus points LOL. So in my experience not exactly. There is something about the Flex Coat Guide Adhesive that causes it to stick to the guide foot - ALWAYS - even after repositioning/aligning the guides. In my testing with reqular old hot melt glue it sticks to the blank when you move the guides.

The ncp requires color preserver to Leo the color the same correct? Or does it mean no color preserver is required?
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Correct - NCP or NOCP thread is an opaque textile that will not darken and turn translucent when finish is applied. Hence, it requires no color preserver. It is fine to use regular nylon for your medium and darker colors, but I highly recommend that you always, always always use NCP thread for the light colors in your wraps - white, yellow, gray, blue, pink, tan, orange, etc. Hope this helps.

So…I would not unless you are stranded on a desert island and have no other options. Braid is not the right material…it does not stretch and doesn’t absorb epoxy well. You’d be better off using polyester or nylon sewing thread. You can try it, but I’d expect it to be a disaster.
