Something for the guy from the UK to consider. If you & your wife have worked in England then you can make voluntary contributions to your UK state pension so you may be able to get the full amount (about £10,000/year each) in addition to your Japanese pension. My wife (also Japanese) worked in the UK for about 5 years and to my surprise, she was also able to get this benefit. I will easily hit the max since I had a fair few years in the UK already, but if she keeps paying in (at a rate of about £3/week) then she will just hit the max before retirement age. That's about £180/year in for £10,000/year out. A bit of a pain to get set up, but well worth the effort - www.gov.uk/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions

100 million yen to have upper middle class lifestyle.

Assuming you have your own home, no debt, receive full kokumin nenkin for 2 people, and follow the 4% rule for your wisely invested ¥100mill yen then you can enjoy a modest upper middle class lifestyle of about 5million yen per year. But that’s before taxes including prefectural and local taxes, Kenko and Kaiho hoken, so it’s a modest upper middle lifestyle, and not at all a flashy one.

You two seem to be somewhat naiive about financial matters, to say the least. I would steer clear of anything to do with the stock market, government, crypto, investment companies, etc (voice of experience). You would be much better off simply putting your savings into a bank investment deposit account overseas, which currently offer eg 4.8% in Australia. The UK also have similar interest rates. Otherwise, if you can, buy property (overseas). I have lived in Japan 33 years. I have an academic (university) pension and the Japanese national pension (pro rata about 55%). You should know that from the national pension the government takes your health insurance payments, some local taxes, and old age insurance. In my case that comes to more than half the pension (or about a quarter of the full pension) and that is net ¥15,000 per month, quite a small amount ! The academic pension is quite poor, only ¥150,000 per month. It used to be about double that but about 25 years ago the academic pension system was forced to join the ailing civil service pension system and thus the academic pension was halved in value. I also receive small pensions from the UK and from Australia, which gives me a total pension income of a little over ¥300,000 a month. I can just manage on this because I have already paid for my house. Knowing all this in advance, I made various other investments over the years and also saved as much as possible, and thus have extra supplementary income for a more comfortable life. And I did also manage to get two children through international school, university and grad/med. on one income. So my advice is to think ahead, think strongly about safe investments, and be ready for the time you retire when your regular income becomes significantly different !! Best wishes from Nagano-ken.

Found this randomly on a link for train experiences in Japan, and it bought back some lovely memories as it's been a while since I have returned back. Stayed in Tottori for around 2 and a half weeks for a university trip and it was such a relaxing place to be - it's seriously under rated! But it's also nice to enjoy a place that so peaceful .... thank you for the video! P.S. Have you ever been to Mizuki Shigeru Road in the town of Sakaiminato for the yokai statues? Definitely recommend!

Thanks for finding it! No, not been to Mizuki Shigeru Road but have been to the city of Chofu (Tokyo) where he lived and created much of his work. Lots of GeGeGe no Kitaro tributes around there. Also recommended! Thanks!

There is not going to be a reduction in lectures at driver licensing places. Lectures are a punishment which I call "little prison". If you have committed any traffic offences, you get one hour of little prison when you renew your license. If you have several offences, you might get two hours of little prison. They aren't going to let you avoid little prison just because they can.

I stayed in Ueno in March 2023 and loved it. I think my accommodation was $50AUD per night. Breakfast was included. The park is beautiful, the cherry blossoms were just coming out. The night life was lively and walking around at night with a can of coffee was fun.

This has got some of the store / restaurant open hours for T3: tokyo-haneda.com/site_resource/shop_and_dine/pdf/shop_and_dine__pdf_int_operating_hours_changed.pdf There is also a hotel at Haneda which offers short stays without having to leave the airport should your budget allow. T3 (the international terminal) at Haneda is open 24hrs

the first thing that shocking me when arrived in Japan is we need to walk everywhere. But of course, it's very enjoyable with many best scenery (for me which is from ASEAN country). Work and some city tour inside Tokyo was very best experience! It's very dawn when arrived at Asakusa. It's empty and so quiet. Ameyoko also nice place for shopping and getting snack. If lucky, we can get good stuff with best price. Beside that place, Eki also have good place for shopping and hunting souvenir. Tokyo-eki is the one I've so excited to come. So many souvenir shop in there, so many. 😎

Thanks! Yeah, loads of souvenir shops in Tokyo station but it can get a bit crowded around all the character goods stores! How nice to have Asakusa at a quiet time. Definitely worth getting up early or staying a bit later to enjoy some peace and quiet around there.
