Hi Mark, Great review. well done. I'm about to pull the trigger on getting one of these machines and I'm struggling to understand what m3/hr airflow I need to factor for dust extraction. Any extractor I get will be a mobile machine with the shortest possible 100mm hose length and will be hooked up as needed so will be literally a number of feet from the P/T. It won't be part of a piped extraction system. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Shane.

I can't give you any specific flow rate (i.e CFM) but I will say it can generate a lot of chips in planer mode. You'll probably be fine with a dedicated extractor. If possible think long term about adding a cyclone. It speeds setup and transitioning from tool to tool so much. Lets you focus on woodworking rather than tool setup/teardown. Hope this helps.

using adapted batteries can result in up to 15% power loss depending on the tool probably should have used native batteries at least for power testing

At 10:51 I noticed you had a Makita battery in the DEWALT blower. When testing, did you use the DEWALT battery in the DEWALT blower? If not what was the reason? Thanks.
@DIYMark9 күн бұрын
Both. I used the same Makita battery on all the blowers for runtime testing. To eliminate differences between batteries. I used the native battery for subjective testing....i.e. @10:40 you'll see Cliff using the dewalt with dewalt battery.

Not many discuss power feeders but they need more attention. I built all the cabinets for our new home from rough cut rift/quartered white oak and my power feeder on the table saw saved my arms and my fingers. Not only is a power feeder a great labor saver but it also makes consistent rips with no nicks that you might get by hand feeding and kick back is eliminated with no riving knife. I have a 1/4 HP power feeder (Maggi Steff) that sells for $750 and a Magswitch kit to hold it down on my cabinet saw. Spending $1500 for these was well worth it IMO, especially for boards longer than 4'. You can also use this power feeder on your jointer and router table with the right setup. Example below: My last project was to make a white oak slatwall ~20' long x 9' high. I bought 8/4 lumber, planed the lumber to 1-3/4", then ripped 101 pieces 7/8'" thick, then planed to 5/8" thick. I then moved the power feeder to the built-in router table on my saw and ran all 101 pieces using a 1/8" roundover in the climb cut direction to eliminate possible tearout. This can only safely and accurately be done with a power feeder. White oak easily gets tearout even with small diameter bits running in the normal direction. I know this from experience unfortunately. My power feeder is by far the best accessory I've ever purchased for my shop!

@DIYMark what brand was that "whole house monitoring and leak detection system" that you mentioned at the tail end of the video? Also, a link to the product would be even better! Much appreciated! Great review. Btw what would you recommend for whole house water filters, instead of Pureagain? I've heard good things about Kinetico but it uses salt and also very expensive.

So I deliberately didn't include links cuz I have no first hand experience with them. But here are the links to the DIY versions that I found that include carbon and NAC conditioning. As far as leak detection I have a Grohe system. It's just OK. Drop me an email and I can give you more details. apexwaterfilters.com/apex-mr-3034?srsltid=AfmBOoqtiDx4rrYZnmBh_vXIbDC0nj-4FYP4PIr4yfCjuZCNt7Y9LesK kindwater.com/product/water-filter-salt-free-softener/?srsltid=AfmBOoqQ_P8g4O73KcfFz2Urm8UMLUptIuxQo9XMuJM9FK4wlHkKLPo8

There is no such thing as salt free water softener. Nothing beats a water softener for scale build up. All you have to do is add a catalytic carbon filter or backwashing system to get the best results. Softeners don’t use much extra water maybe like taking an extra shower or two a week. You shouldn’t be drinking tap water as your primary source of water so sodium shouldn’t be an issue. Buy a reverse osmosis with alkaline filter for drinking water. 😂😂

Good job Mark. (...and it's a Hare and a Tortoise on that button. Y'know, the fable/parable.) I'm for the Makita (...as I have many batteries and products), but lately I've used a number of Milwaukee products which may we outgun my system choice. Good to clear that up, Cheers.

This is exactly what I needed to see! I’m canceling my order for a non-oscillating Supermax. Little doubt that the time saved letting the machine get me closer to stain ready will quickly justify the extra cost.

Inexplicably you never give the actual model numbers, and these makers have many many similar. I finally saw a screenshot at 5m36s that lists them all together. Anyway I ended up buying a Ryobi brushless similar to the one here, and really like it. Why? I don't need super high power, though it's plenty for me. I really like quiet tools and it's the quietest I've ever used. I don't have Ryobi batteries but I have a DeWalt 20V adapter and a dozen DW batts. It has a part throttle lock which is essential. Price is right. I also have used a DeWalt, Stihl, other non-brushless Ryobis, and gas backpacks. This is the first one I'm not even tempted to wear ear protection. I sure get tired of all the comments about how these piddling little 18V tools are a joke, you need a backpack or 60V for "real" power. Most homeowners are just blowing off our drives and walkways once or twice a week and light weight, quiet operation, and 20 min run time are just perfect. Bigger batteries and more power are a lot heavier and pricier, not really necessary, but if you need the power then have at it there are plenty of options.

this was my first look at a drum sander and it was a great introduction. First obvious question is can you have multiple drums that you drop in so you're not constantly wrapping them with different grits?
@DIYMarkАй бұрын
The short answer is no. It would take some significant deconstruction to get the drum out. It's not that bad to wrap paper on the drum after you do it a few times. But I get your point.

I looked at the reviews for this company. If you do the same , it appears to be a rip off when you have to replace filters. Per the reviews, they lie about haow much the filters when be when they sell you the system. So later, you get charged far more than they initially said. This looks like a SCAM.

I have one and I love it. Remember it works much better with light dry leaves but if you take your time it will work fine with wet leaves also. I wish I had one 30 years ago before I got this I had to drag tarped leaves 100 yards to the woods now I just roll the vacuum down and empty the bag
